What's the complaint again...? I thought for a minute it was about /nin, but then it was about rdm, though I'm gonna focus on the /nin complaint.

The original complaint is that someone wants to be a non-conformist with a chip on their shoulder AND have society totally accept and welcome them as such.

It doesn't work in the real world. I don't know why players expect it to work in FFXI.

Because it's a gaaame and games are supposed to be fuuun! At least, that seems to be Bluecat's argument, and the most common one for people who won't accept the reality of how pickup party play works. It's not like there aren't problems, but the solution isn't to scream at the majority about how wrong they are and how anti-you the status quo is and how they should accomodate free thought and exceptions and how they should be sensitive to the dreams born of one's heart. Believe me, I've tried in places where change would have been more possible and they nominally wanted some. (Should've known a Mega Man MUSH would be full of robots...)

A lot of us don't like the current status quo either. Why do you think we argue that SE should adjust things so that meleeburn isn't the dominant party type? We want to regularly sub things other than /NIN and debuff mobs again too. We just see what it'd actually take to get there.

Of course, sitting around waiting for SE to solve our problems is unsatisfying. As such, we do other stuff in the meantime. I never take part in merit parties on my RDM anymore because I don't want RDM reduced to the "pink mage" role 100% of the time either, not to mention I want to play alongside my BLM friend and BLMs have no place in meleeburns. Instead, we do Campaign battle or sleepnuke things like buffalo, marids, or wivres. I came in wanting to tank on PLD/RDM, and ended up building on the foundation of someone else's experimentation in that arena and, later, enmity research -- and, of course, not trying to force it on pickup parties, but playing it in a static trio with close friends playing DDs. (Though between gear and practice, I'm at a point where I think we could invite an open-minded backline and thus show what we can do to the world...) We also know a MNK/RDM who mostly soloed her way to the top and can solo things no one "should" be able to.

So what can you do?

• If you don't want to main heal, don't seek unless WHMs -- or at least more accomodating RDMs -- are seeking.
• Learn about how traditional parties are structured, and build them, being explicit about your intent. Be ready to tell the DDers how to skillchain, though.
• Level jobs whose potential is best tapped by adding roles one plays, not subtracting them. Who's going to get more invites than average, a RDM who says "{main} {Heal!} {No thanks.}" or a WAR who says "{meat} {Shield} OK!" and doesn't complain if he DDs instead?
• Find like-minded people and make a static. (Though the way you describe your server, you might have to jump servers -- which server are you on anyway?)

If you don't want to have to make an effort to carve your own niche when the status quo isn't to your liking, then I'm sorry, FFXI is not for you. You may want to look into planets other than Earth as well. -- Pteryx

I don't like the system either. I absolutely loved leveling my drk as drk/whm because IT WORKED in lower levels. I bucked the system for a long time until I realized that you need to go along with the majority too sometimes to accomplish your goals. So when I feel in the mood to do something "crazy", I surround myself with like minded people and go have that type of "fun". Some people just want to do things his/her way without bending to the majority. They are told to surround themselves with people like them and then go have their fun but to leave the majority alone because they are having their kind of fun too. If you can't accept both sides of a disagreement then there is no point in complaining because there will be no resolution.

Basketball is a game, and most people play it for fun. But not everyone has the same idea of "fun". I know a lot of basketball players who consider full court to be a lot of fun. I don't though. I usually end up being the only player who gets back on defense, and I burn up all my energy running up and down the court and rarely being involved in any offensive plays (because all off the offense ends up being fast break stuff). I prefer half court basketball.

So what happens if everyone else wants to play full court, but I only want to play half court?
1. Play full court anyway, since I'm in the minority when it comes to my preferences.
2. Not play in the full court game, and instead look for other like minded basketball players so we can start our own game of half court basketball.
3. Start an angry rant in a public forum about how full court basketball is inferior and why I think everyone else should convert to my way of thinking.

I'm not going to pick option #3, in case anyone was wondering. I see anti /NIN rants so often, I'm surprised players don't go with option #2. There must be at least 6 people on each server who share that attitude. If there isn't at least 6 people on any particular server, there's always the option to server transfer. Set up a static, and everyone can sub whatever they want without having to worry about conforming to the standards of the general population at large.

But that would be inconvenient, wouldn't it? Having to find a static, set up a schedule, and potentially even change servers requires so much work. Well, sorry. If you want the convenience of putting up your party flag and joining random pick up parties, you have to be willing to compromise a bit.

I went to Campaign today as BLM47, I was curious as to what I'd be able to do.

The answer was ... not much. Nearly all my XP came from tossing off heals. Oh well, it's not like the attempt cost me anything but a bit of time and some AN I made back...
