Re: FFXI sequel (Edit: NOT) in the works
Sequel or not.. it's still fun to speculate....

I guess I'm the only one who would love to see a pre-sequel during the Zilart age (1000 years before the current age... I think). There is just something about seeing something familiar, yet new. Like running through a lushy vegetated Gustaberg and seeing the waterfall. Maybe even doing missions that help create Sky and finally have the "What's the Green Portal for?" that everyone asks in this version answered in the sequel. Yet, while there are these touches of familiarity, the world still remains new.

Edit: Found the History of Vana'Diel.... the age I'm talking about didn't have the 5 current races. :O

Re: FFXI sequel (Edit: NOT) in the works
*Sequel nonsense talk*

Correct me if I am wrong, but if they made a true sequel to FFXI (Which they won't) it would be the same as FFXII. As in being the same world as another FF, but in the future.

No need for Japan-Pop and midfight clothing change in the tradition of Sailor Moon...

Edit:

Alright, enough of the "sequel".

Based on the history of these companies, what does everyone here believe to be the new MMO?

I assume it will be a whole new project, not really tying into any of the previous franchises, yet taking a small amount of inspiration from each.

I really don't know what to think, it was expected that they used FF as their first MMOG because the name was more than enough publicity for them to have a good start. But one thing is clear, now that SE made a name as a capable MMOG developer they can try new projects without having to use a recognized game secuel for it.

After all, they always said that video was just a tech demo, if it was FFXI inspired or not doesn't mean the game has to look like that at all, so I really have no clue about what their plans are.

I would not play an MMO that contained elements of Star Ocean. Sorry, SO fans, but ugh.

I think it has to do with how SE has reciently realized how much of a market there is in the continuation of their most popular stories (AC, Compiation of FF7, the FFXIII trilogy we've heard of).

I am just banking on FFVI-2. Mog+Songstress Dress Sphere FTW!
Just my wishful thinking ;p i dont want no FFXI-2, but like its been said here id like it to be a "spiritual sequel", where the visual style and general atmosphere are reminiscent of FFXI

Re: FFXI sequel (Edit: NOT) in the works
They probably haven't thought far enough ahead to know what the mmo is going to end up.

Given that FFseries are tied together so loosely, you can't call any(besides FFX-2) of the FF's sequel/prequels.

If you called FF6 Terra, and FF7 Midgard. No one would realize it. Heck JP-> US naming schemes do it all the time. On the flip side you can have sequels that have no right to be called sequels(Phantasy star 3).

If SE grabs a good portion of the FFxi team, or team mindset, to the new project, you bet there will be a lot of familiarities. You can definitelly throw the words sequel in there.

Though it would be great if they do decide to go back on their word or modify it to a FF name scheme.

This way they are free to use our beloved names and classes. Whms and hammers....ahh 8-bit theater....

Re: FFXI sequel (Edit: NOT) in the works
I guess I'll throw my two cents in.

Importing characters between FFXI and this new game seems like so remote a possibility to me that I don’t even want to think about it. Perhaps rewards for FFXI subscribers in the vein of WoW’s panda, Diablo, and zergling pets, but nothing related to gameplay. Square has gone to lengths to not let old content trivialize in FFXI, no way they'd do that in an new game.

I don’t think FFXI is going to disappear. I can’t imagine Square would shoot itself in the foot and make an MMO that totally replaces another of it’s MMOs. If they think they can get 500k subs on NotFFXI-2 and maintain 500k on FFXI they’ll go for it. Perhaps meaning 300k subscribing to only one, 200k to both. Should the new game be a Final Fantasy gamethen it will be a challenge to make a game that offers a different enough experience that it draws a different crowd while maintaining a quality to the aesthetics and gameplay that make it recognizable as Final Fantasy. A futuristic setting would go a long way to accomplish that, it’s amazing how many people like either fantasy or sci fi and loathe the other.

Direct sequel or not, if it is a Final Fantasy game the new game will probably showcase a lot of the same concepts as FFXI. Plot, cutscenes, simple teamwork based group combat, and some kind of Job/Ability system I expect would remain. Probably (or hopefully) not the day/moon system crafting though. Even if not, then the conformity and compatibility Kuu mentioned is still likely. The characters probably won’t be as customizable as western made MMOs, both in appearance and play mechanics. I believe there was an interview where it stated they wanted FFXI players to feel like just one of the crowd, hence the low amount of customization. Two characters of the same class are very similar in FFXI and are usually interchangeable in a party.

This new game will probably be more casual (not necessarily soloist) friendly and fast paced. That is the trend with MMOs these days, and it would distinguish it from FFXI and draw a different fan base. From Square I expect more refinement and evolution than revolution or innovation. I believe they are somewhat proud though and won’t give up the idea of international servers with translation features. I posted elswhere on these forums with how a system Vanguard has in place to scale equipment with level could be worked into the level capped battlefields to make them more accessible. That game also has an encounter system that can spawn creatures for your group if you meet certain conditions, possibly avoiding the negatives of both instanced and non-instanced game designs while reaping the positives of both. I give these as examples of how Square could make a game more welcoming to casual gameplay than FFXI without making it a WoW clone.

Almost every programer would be aganist an import of any kind, or keeping the server alive longer then they have to.

It's unbalancing, limited, and make bad coding

The FFxi windows model is a POS x10. It's clearly seen that they overshot their orginal engineering.

A much better programmed from the ground up, would produce better everything. And deciding to drop dial-up even better.

A much better idea would be a 6 month 50% discount for current POL subscribers(with the 30 day trial )

I would go as far as convert your ffxi character's name with some better newbie equipment. Some people hold on to their characters name for their dear-life.(though how to do it with the different servers is tricky)

The best way for ffxi would be to let it die an honorable death, and learn from its mistake and advantages.

It's like the Brookyn bridge. It's costing 3 times as much upkeep as building a new modern bridge.

At this point it's really upto management vs developers. They can go a long way by appealing to FFxi fans with familiarity, but on the other hand the developer's visions are limited.

Let's hope it's somewhere inbetween.
