The 9th Vana'diel Census (06/22/2009)

Today we bring you the 9th Vana'diel Census, which marks the seventh anniversary of FINAL FANTASY XI.
In addition to the familiar information, we've mixed in data from the preliminary survey to dig deep and show the true face of the community.
Other fascinating never-before-seen statistics such as how merit points are used and the number of players who have earned one of the coveted mythic weapons are also included!

---------------------------------------------------------------

Introduction

On May 16, 2009, FINAL FANTASY XI celebrated the seven-year anniversary of its launch in Japan! This past year has brought us the first of three new add-on scenarios featuring a variety of new stories expanding on the world of FINAL FANTASY XI.

To better understand the game’s players, we tried something different for the 9th Vana’diel Census and performed a preliminary survey. Using the results of the survey for reference, we’ve attempted to show the current state of the community by analyzing and looking at the data from every side possible!

There are LOTS of charts, graphs and more info so head over to

I love this chart. "Just like in real life, the people making tons of money don't do hard labor".

And hey, Balfree, check out the 'unused linkshell colors' bit. Notice anything?

OVER HALF OF THEM ARE LIME GREEN.

Re: The 9th Vana'diel Census (06/22/2009)

2.35 million characters. 62.47% of all characters are Lv.1, and 12.08% of all characters in the Lv.2-75 range are Lv.5 or lower. Assuming most of Lv.1-5 characters and under are mules (and that most mules are Lv.5 and under*), a very rough estimate for the number of subscription would be about 775,400.

(Presuming that SE is only counted active accounts' characters, that is.)

Which, if close to the truth, would be pretty amazing, since the estimate for FFXI's peak subscription number was ~700,000 back in mid 2005; few large MMORPGs make a substantial rebound in subscription after reaching plateau. (Lineage managed it in 2006 but it didn't come close to its all time high.)

* If assuming most Lv.10 and under mules and most mules are Lv.10 and under instead, the estimate for subscriptions becomes ~661,600, which is still impressive. This is one MMORPG with a lot of legs.

Re: The 9th Vana'diel Census (06/22/2009)

Both of my mules are around level 20 if you count their highest job and not the one they're currently on - just from their first two anniversary rings. I plan to eventually get one to whitegate and unlock COR so he can 2hr between Nyzul runs.

Some people have mules that are actually extra characters that are leveled up pretty high ('kitten comes to mind, plus I know a couple in game).

@Feba: Survey results are unreliable. You really have to wonder about the sample size, not to mention the truthfulness, of people claiming to make 10 million gil a *week*. Maybe they were answering on the basis of their best week ever, the time they got that drop from Up in Arms?

Also, I bet that the people claiming to make millions of gil a week from synthesis are counting their gross, not their net. Nobody HQs *that* much, or HQs wouldn't be worth as much as they are.

Hey Feba, nice story.

Is it also true that most people have bad taste in general?

Aren't most people in the world total idiots?

I'm pretty sure especially you will agree with me.

Example: Naruto anime has a lot of fans. But anyone with a little bit of taste knows it's poor quality.

Just because more people like something, doesn't mean its good. Usually its the opposite.

Another example: WoW has a lot of subscribers. Nuff said.

There's a difference between "everyone loves it" and "everyone avoids it".

A big difference.

Especially when 'everyone avoids it' means literally everyone. Out of probably half a million people. Nobody wanted it. Not. One.

I was hoping WAR/SAM would've made a strong showing on the list, but it was not there. Instead was WAR/NIN and then on the game statistic side WAR/MNK with WAR/NIN later on down the list.

Doesn't matter if people avoid it or love it. Numbers mean nothing, only superior minds count, and they are lacking, thus the results.

Half a million idiots is still half a million idiots.

Lime green prints money.

You don't like it, people don't like it, you can all go have a sexy party by yourselves if you want.

AND STOP THANKING HIM YELLOW MAGE, ITS NOT LIKE YELLOW IS ANY BETTER THAN GREEN.

Also i'll ban ur ass.

Actually, both yellow and green are among the most popular colors. It's just lime green that's suffering all sorts of disuse (as in NEVER BEEN USED AT ALL EVER).

But on that note, yellow kicks green's butt. And lime green isn't even a worthy opponent of yellow.

Oh, and you know what else is yellow? These guys:

Congratulations. You have just lost the argument so badly that not only does your defense of Yellow fail completely, but you have lost the argument between me and Balfree on the validity of lime green.

That's right. Your argument was so bad that you also lost all arguments in the vicinity.

Your argument was so terrible I don't even want to admit to ever treating you with anything less than scorn.

Your argument is terrible, on every single level.

You have attained a new level of stupidity, beyond even Malacite.

Somewhere out there, an advanced civilization is out there watching us, waiting for the day we are enlightened enough to be included in their society, and your argument made them give up hope on us ever being an intelligent species.

Thanks a fucking lot.

I like the 7,7,7 pearl color. Should try 6,6,6 and see what it looks like.
