Warning Regarding PlayOnline ID and Password Fraud (Jun 12,2009)

Posted by PlayOnline

Warning Regarding PlayOnline ID and Password Fraud

It has come to our attention that certain individuals are contacting FINAL FANTASY XI players in-game, and referring them to fake websites resembling the log-in page of the official Linkshell Community site. The fraudulent site directs players to enter their PlayOnline ID and password, with the intent of using the collected information to compromise the account. We are currently investigating and working to take the appropriate actions against these malicious websites.

Be careful with your information so as not to become a victim of "phishing." Do not disclose your PlayOnline ID or password to anyone or attempt to log-in anywhere other than the official FINAL FANTASY XI Linkshell Community and PlayOnline website.

*The only exception is when dealing directly with a PlayOnline Information Center representative via the PlayOnline Service & Support Web Chat system. You may be asked for your PlayOnline ID or registration code in such cases.

Also, please note that no Square Enix representative (Game Master (GM) staff included) will ever ask you to provide your PlayOnline ID or password from within the game or via e-mail. If you experience such a request while in-game, please contact a GM to report it.

Keep your data safe! Keep your PlayOnline ID and Password secure!

Re: Warning Regarding PlayOnline ID and Password Fraud (Jun 12,2009)

God why are people still so stupid.....

Random person: "hey go to this site for (insert random reason here)"
*go to site* (stupid if you go there in the first place)
*site asks for ID and pass for your account*

1) Wrong answer "oh ok cool" *enters info*

2) Right answer "hell no I am not stupid" *reports player and website*

and 90% of the people that fall for this, are going to the site, because someone told them it was full of ways to cheat, so I dont feel sorry for them anyway ;p

This is incorrect.

Screenshots posted on BG show that the tells people have been receiving state that they have been suspected of RMT and that their account will be locked in one hour unless they go to this website to contest it.

Still utterly retarded to fall for it, but I have no doubt that in a state of paranoia some people will go check it out anyway.

Though this shouldn't really be a problem since almost everyone has a token nowadays.

... and promptly disassociated it from their account the moment they got their satchel. The people that fall for this stuff aren't the brightest bulbs and don't understand why they needed the token in the first place.

I agree, they pretty much saw "OMG more inventory space!!!" and thats it. I play on 360, and I still kept the security token linked to my FFXI account for this very reason. Srry, but I'd rather not risk all those years of playing the game I have put into my account only to have an RMT steal it.

Even as annoyed as I am with having to find that damn token every time I have to log in, (every time I log my mule account in, every time I d/c...) I'm still not retarded enough to unlink it.

I wasn't gonna buy it to begin with until they bundled it with the satchel, but now that I have it I may as well take advantage of it.

Actually, I have heard of people getting hacked even while using the Security token.

But anyways.... Those that do use those sites are idiots. They give you a site name, that doesn't look like the PoL site name, yet you go to it, and it looks like it... Why in the hell would you even bother to put in your Play online ID, and even password.

When I used to be on Gaia all the time Rping... I'd get these messages like 5 times a day. Mainly due to what my character had on. (I wasn't rich, I just had a lot of expensive items on my character), and I had like 10 hacking attempts as well.

Re: Warning Regarding PlayOnline ID and Password Fraud (Jun 12,2009)

SORRY I AM LATE GUYS, I WAS TOTALLY SLEEPING.

Also, nope. I have no idea how many people are using the token, how many bought it and stopped using it, and how many people never bought it in the first place. But then, I don't think any of us do, beyond anecdotal evidence.

And quite frankly, if you're stupid enough to fall for this, SE could put your computer inside a bank vault and require you to take a retinal scan to access your account and you'd still fuck it up somehow. The strongest security system has always been, and will always be, common sense and a little bit of preparation and knowledge of how and why to keep things secure.

Oh, and Kailea, I'm still perfectly willing to punch you in the face. Just like always.
