Re: Square Enix Security Token Release Date Details (03/31/2009)

I'm just wondering what this tab is. I mean, does it plug into the computer or something? Or is it just a separate device? What if you lose it? What if it malfunctions? What if your cat eats it?

My guess would be, don't let your cat eat it?

Knowing SE they'd probably take the "you lost it, your problem" attitude.

They can't do anything about it if you lose it. You have to get a new one and register it or stop using the security feature (if possible) by talking to costumer service.

No one plans on it.

I'd give them 10$ for 80 slots, and 10 more for another 80, and maybe 10 more after that for another 80.

I did have a thought that conspiracy theorists might enjoy. Do you think maybe SE is behind some of the account hacks....? Drive up fear and make people think they need one of these tokens. Sleep well.

Edit: Oh to anyone that shares their account with someone else that they actually live with, just leave the token at home on your desk. You don't have to keep it with you. Only time this would be a real problem is if you share your account with someone you don't live with, and in that particular case, just doin't do it. Seriously don't, I don't care how much you trust them.

Edit2: The info in the original post says April 7th is a Monday..? My calendar says the 7th is a Tuesday and the 8th (expansion release date) is a Wednesday. Is the Japanese calendar somehow different or was that just a typo?

Every minute (or whatever set number of time)) it generates a number. You put that number in as your password, or a part of it. The same number is generated on SE's servers (it's linked to your specific dongle), so without the number, you cannot login.

Basically, what this means is that the physical possession of the dongle is a security feature. Because of the way the number is generated, there's no real harm in someone seeing it (so long as they don't have a chance to use it within the next minute). Keyloggers are ineffective, as (again, unless they can use it within the next minute) the password does them no good when it's constantly changing. Not that that's any excuse to go without malware protection.

And yes, if it's lost, basically all you can do is have customer service replace or revoke the service

I think the picture shown was one with a USB plugin from the original topic, although that may not be the same one. If you lose it, you'll probably have to call POL and have them unregister it and then buy another one. If it malfunctions you'll probably have to call the company that the codes are linked to. I know we use tokens here for our electronic fingerprint machine and also the people who oversee our bank accounts have them as well. One time the fingerprint token malfunctioned and was displaying a code from the day before or something to that effect. I think she ended up having to have it reprogrammed somehow after she called the company. If the cat eats it....Uhhh... Plug the cat into the USB port, that'll fix it.

Considering the company that manufactures these probably charges them not only for the end product but also the technology and service backend, and then there's all the costs of doing business with them, they probably don't profit very much on them. And then there's the fact that stolen accounts means more customer service, which means more time you have to pay for living, breathing human beings, instead of cold (well, hot) unfeeling server hardware.

I wouldn't be surprised if these tokens were more of a way of reducing customer service costs than they are of actually making money.

Yeah i'm sure you're right. I still think it's a decent way to prevent accounts from being hacked/stolen.

Agreed. It also wouldn't surprise me if, like it was said earlier, SE starts refusing to help people who have stolen accounts that don't have or didn't use the token. It'd be awesome if each token had some kind of Self ID Code on the back of it so that SE could link your code to your account. So that way if your account is stolen and all your info is changed, you should be the only person with your Token. Adding to that, if you give them the token ID Code on the back then you shouldn't have to go through the IDing process since all of that info is now wrong anyways. On that same note they probably believe that the token will defeat all stolen accounts so there shouldn't be any anyways in their opinions. It wouldn't surprise me if the RMT try to grab as many accounts as they can before the Secure IDs come out.

TL;DR Version

Don't pay me any attention I'm rambling as usual.

Re: Square Enix Security Token Release Date Details (03/31/2009)

Damn, my first reaction is, "No expansions to the mog safe system due to PS2 memory limitations" my furry mithra posterior.

^ Cleaned up the above just a tad to save the mods some trouble.

As for just how 'big' up to 80 inventory slots is for someone, I have this to say:

I wonder if $10 will get me a relic? >.>

So, realizing that this is probably guesswork at this point in time, how secure is this thing? I'm a little fuzzy on it, does the token generate the password or does the SE server that you have to sign up with to make this work generate the password? In the event that it is the server, would it be possible for someone to hack into it and get all passwords?

Losing my character to some hacker is of some concern to me because I am not computer savvy, I don't know what all to guard against or how to use countermeasures effectively. If the token is a good safety feature, I'd probably get it. $10 when I have been playing since the U.S PC release, which was what, november '03? So I have paid $845 to SE by now, just going by $13/month and not counting additional characters. $10 to protect a $845 investment, sounds like a decent idea to me.

More details like battery life and suchlike would be nice, but I'm assuming we'll know more closer in.

$20 says that the mog satchel will use one inventory slot It'll be interesting to see if this counts as additional gobbiebag storage or more like mogsafe storage. The difference to me largely being that stuff in your gobbiebag can be used in gear swap macros, stuff in the mogsafe can't.

I don't think it will, it says it will be accessible anywhere, in MH or outside so I reckon it will just be another option in the menu along with "Mog Safe, Mog Locker, Storage" but then again, either are possible

Re: Square Enix Security Token Release Date Details (03/31/2009)

It depends on how it works, some tokens generate a new key and display it every time you press a button, others generate a different key after a certain period of time (and display it when you press the button). Either way the algorithms the token uses to generate the key are stored on SE's server too, so they can verify the code you enter is valid.

The battery life of these things is massive (they use a wristwatch sized battery but use only a fraction of it with normal use) so you'll probably lose it or brake it (or quit the game) before the battery runs out.

And the inventory thing will probably work like a Mog Locker, and you'll probably need to move things from it to your Gobbiebag before being able to use them. The only difference is you'll be able to access it anywhere in Vana, not just your MH.

Or something like that.

Edit > Oh ya, btw why the hell didn't SE do that 3 years ago? They could've simply restrict it to carry armor and weapons only if they were worried about RMT using them to fish and stuff.

Gotta love their timing.
