My Mood: | Introducing the Square Enix Security Token (03/10/2009)
Introducing the Square Enix Security Token (03/10/2009) As a result of growing account security concerns within the online gaming community, Square Enix is proud to introduce the Square Enix Security Token. The token greatly increases the security of PlayOnline accounts by allowing users to log on by using a constantly changing one-time password that is displayed on the screen. The Square Enix Security Token will be available for purchase through the PlayOnline Viewer in the near future for those who wish to take advantage of the added security this optional service provides. As a special incentive, each Square Enix Security Token will come with an exciting in-game bonus which may just prove indispensible during your many adventures in Vana'diel! Information on the Security Token's release date and price, as well as further details regarding the in-game bonus, will be announced at a later date. |

Liked it right up to the "awesome ingame item!" bit. Really, SE, you do realize people will buy some things without being bribed, right? Also, am I the only one that would prefer it to be part of the password, instead of the entire thing? These things are basically as secure as car keys; just fine up until your prick family steal them for pranks or stupidity. For example, just have it at the beginning of the password, or even an extra field in POL's login screen. That way you get the security of a password that constantly changes AND a key that can't be physically stolen. |

If it works like the netkey from banks then you just have to register your key generator number and from that moment on it will ask you for both your password plus the random key every time you log-in in this format: ID: ******** Password: ******** Random key: ******** I'd definitely buy it, but sadly I doubt it will be available for MX. ...then again, is not like I'm still playing anyway. <_<;

And Raydeus, worst case scenario you can find someone you have moderate short-term trust in stateside and have them buy it for your account and then ship it to you.

The in game item will work to get the word around to people that might not see the original announcement. There is also the group of people that don't understand what SE is doing here and wouldn't buy it because of that without the item.

Because, when push comes to shove, there are many people who won't buy stuff without being "bribed". And when you can successfully increase the sales of your physical product by including a damn near free-to-produce digital product, then most companies will eagerly throw in that added bonus. They don't "have" to include the "free item", but they do because it makes them more money.

I finally got a look at the picture of this (I can't see most links on my work computer), and it reminds me of the SecurID token I use for work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SecurID These things are great for making secure connections. For those not familiar, it will display a new 6 digit numeric code every minute. The code that is displayed at the time of login is of course the one that will authenticate. So if the code changes before you hit enter odds are you'll have to try again. The one I use has a 6 "notch" bar on the display and the notches disappear every 10 seconds or so as a countdown to the next code. I will seriously consider purchasing one of these if the price is right. One of my friends recently got hacked for the second time, and is now stuck on a different server with just their Rare/Ex for the next three months. While I have decent confidence in my current security measures that kind of thing still scares me.
