We coulda done that even earlier, when they opened up server choice on character creation, or again, whey they opened up server transfers.

Buddy Pass != World Pass. The buddy pass is the code you get when you buy a full copy of the game that lets someone else download it and try it for free. So that thread wasn't completely pointless in theory until this announcement (although I wonder how many people requesting a buddy pass ever actually got one).
