Ixion - meh, I was never that excited about him anyway. Seemed like SE spent several games failing to come up with a good substitute for Ramuh, when there was no good reason to ditch him in the first place. But I guess we'll see what they come up with for it, if it is a summon at all.
Sometimes, they just play with other mythological characters to shake things up.

Odin and Alex are more powerful, the difference for them is that they have to have a human host to unleash thier power. This is pretty much why they can't be summoned, even though they were Celestial avatars. As vague as Carbuncle can be, I do remember his concerns regarding the attempts to wake the other celestials. Odin and Alexander were written out of the avatar list before ToA was even out.

And don't you think it'd be a tad odd to introduce a summon (though Ixion was only ever in 10 >.>) that seemingly has zero influence on the game's story only as an HNM?

(side note; Fenrir is pretty central to Windy's story if you think about it AND damn powerful, but we still got him. Bahamut I think is just too big, as are Alex and Odin.)

It'd be kinda cool if it was a NM that dropped rare/ex items that you could trade in for the ability to summon it.
The new NM system will be for ToAU mobs only I believe, and the story with Ix specifically mentions him showing up at the end of battles with lots of dead, just like the Sandworm. This tells me we should expect him to be a zone hoping HNM in the past and my guess is a third isn't too far off. Personally, this is the kind of HNM I want to see, something that can spawn any where, any time and kick your ass because you're not sitting there for 3 hours with your claim-bots on standby.
I sincerely doubt he's an Avatar at all, they would have specifically said he was like they've done with all the other Avatars.

I agree, this would mean people would really have to hunt an HNM, have people scattered in various zones on the lookout for it and actually playing the game. I always find the people who find a thrill to "camp and claim" to be a bit strange, actually hunting and persuing an NMs would be a bit more interesting to me.

I think the lack of drops made the Sandworm more of a threat and a nusiance that was killed out of necessity or outright avoided as opposed to something people would specifically camp and hunt.
....which again is a good thing to me cause that adds an extra element of danger to the game, and the past specifically, if you knew that some super lvl 80+ mob could be randomly wandering around anywhere in the zone. I know it made those few campaign battles where he was sitting on the fort that much more dangerous. But then again I enjoy killing tough mobs for the fun of killing tough mobs and only care about rewards secondary to that.

At this point, all I want to know is when the update is... SE's really stringing out the info this time. We still haven't gotten to SCH and DNC merit info, so I'm left to assume we've got another week and a half to wait.
