I did not find this in the news section as of yet nor have I found a thread thus far. Anyways, here are the details from POL's homepage.

The PlayOnline Membership Information section can now be accessed from the web! (12/18/2007)


Starting today, the PlayOnline "Membership Information" section under Service & Support on the PlayOnline Viewer can be accessed from the web.
The site is currently limited to viewing specific account data, but in the future, more features will be added and users will be able to purchase Content IDs or change payment methods.

Eh... it's only less secure if your system has been compromised in which case logging in normally is equally less secure. This is a feature shared by most PC-centered games that is just now coming to FFXI. I don't think that this is a particularly useful feature, but I'm sure they did this based on poll results and requests. I can't really see why you need access to this via web though other than in the instance that FFXI is completely broken or you need to cancel your account from your Grandma's PC in Hoboken.

I noticed that about my own account awhile back. I think they probably changed database structures or something and didn't translate the fields correctly. Given that the order of given and family name is reversed between our cultures it seems like an easy mistake to make.

I've seen these kinds of problems before and it can only be attributed to human error.

There's PEBKAC, which I like for some things, but is too obscure for someone to figure it out without plainly looking it up.

Eye Dee Ten Tee is a good one, and it's genericness lends to it a lot of other stuff. For example, car problems.

One I heard lately that I've really liked since then is 'Carbon-based interface problem'. Clear enough to be obvious to most, but the people making said mistakes will probably never figure it out.

A good way for people to use a safe access would be something akin to EVE online, with Limited access API keys to access character data, along with viewing some things like things that you sold in the last 2 weeks or something like that.

but your still accessing something over the interweb, and we know anydata is up for grabs if the companies that handle it mis place laptops and leave backdoors open.

I also noticed my surname and first name is backwards as well. I called support and they said that there's nothing that they can do about the name, it's that when they changed databases, they flipped the names on older accounts or something like that.

It's odd, I would think something like that would be simple to fix, or manual fix by allowing the player to do so.

Omniblast, the EVE API is a great great system, but its main purpose is third party apps.

Safety isn't a problem, since the API only has minor privacy concerns, by showing things like your bank account and skills, and can't be used to gain access to your account.

EVE's API is so you can put it in EVE Mon and similar programs that will watch your skill training, or put it onto third party websites that will show your skills compared to other people and such. If FFXI did such a thing, it would be rather pointless, as SE actively encourages any outside programs even relating to FFXI, and about the only FFXI website that would benefit from having access to personal/financial information would be FFXIAH.
