Each job is leveled independently of another. But every character can have all 20 jobs.
For instance, if I start as Warrior, and level to 18, then unlock my subjob, I can switch to THF, for example, and be THF1/WAR1. As I level up, only my THF job will get exp (subjobs do not gain exp), but because I already leveled WAR to 18, I can level THF to 37 without having to worry about leveling my sub job. (I mean, in theory. Usually you can't get away with having just one sub.)
At any point, you can go into your moghouse, or talk to a nomad moogle and switch your main and subjobs around. If you were to level to 18 WAR as in the example above, and then make THF your sub job, you would be WAR 18/THF 1. And even if you went out and got exp, your THF sub would stay at level 1, because only the job you have slotted as "main" gets exp.
Switching between jobs, however, does not cause you to lose exp or levels. You just won't have access to all of the levels on a subjob until you level your main job more. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | The following user says "Thank You" to Murphie for above post: | | | 02-29-2008, 11:01 AM | #5 (permalink) | | Loaded With Sodium Oracle of Knowledge Join Date: Jul 2005 Posts: 7,964 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 448 Thanked 1,591x in 1,001 Posts Gil: 4,819 Bank: 34,530 Total Gil: 39,349 Donate | Re: character levels question? What kind of skills are you referring to?
You can't make any improvements to a job when it is slotted as your sub. A job has to be listed as your main job for you to gain any exp, or learn any spells and abilites. But once learned, they are learned forever. And if you level another job that uses the same spell (such as WHM or BLM and RDM or SCH) then you won't have to re-buy that spell. You'll already know it. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to Murphie For This Useful Post: | | | 02-29-2008, 11:50 AM | #9 (permalink) | | Senior Veteran Oracle of Knowledge Join Date: May 2006 Posts: 4,618 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 116 Thanked 1,434x in 870 Posts Gil: 2,479 Bank: 333,825 Total Gil: 336,304 Donate | Re: character levels question? Yes, I agree that it's best to teach people how to help themselves, but it's not as though we have to read or respond to threads where people are asking questions that we don't feel we should have to answer.
