Re: Brand new

I'd agree with Tak, get something up to level 18 and go complete the subjob quest. After that you'll either be sick of the class you're playing or it will start to grow on you.

Either way you'll now have more options(via subjob) and you'll need to go back and level up another class anyway since people tend to give you funny looks if you don't have your subjob capped.

Re: Brand new

Plus, it's a lot easier to solo once you have access to a sub job. /WHM sub is the shit for low level soloing.

Doubly so with FoV refresh and a Cobra Tunica.

Re: Brand new

Macros
Macros generally follow this formula:

/prefix ability <target>

/ja = job ability
/ma = magic

So if I was gonna attack a crawler it would be like this:
/combo <taget>

Or like this:
/combo <crawler>

??? Sorry I am very dense and everything else I tried didn't work. It just says command error or something along those lines.

Re: Brand new

Missing the prefix. Weapon skills start with /ws. Target should be either <t> (whatever is currently targetted) or <stnpc> (brings up the targetting arrow so you can choose among any of the mobs; can be useful sometimes.)

So /ws "Combo" <t> or /ws "Combo" <stnpc>

The "'s aren't mandatory when the ability/spell/ws only has a single word, but it's mandatory when it's multiple words. It's a good habit to throw in the "" so you don't have to think about it when you do encounter two-word things like One-Inch Punch.

Re: Brand new

Hey thanks for replying to all my questions Armando. That makes perfect sense to me now. I was never a PC gamer and I got a keyboard for my 360 just for this game so I never had to deal with macros before. Is using macros a necessity or just convenience as the game progresses because I find it is rather simple to just use the regular controls for now and barely touch my keyboard but I could imagine how macros would be more useful once you have more spells, skills, etc. to play around with.

Re: Brand new

When you are first starting out macros are nice, but not a necessity. Later on you will be switching equipment for specific spells or abilities so they do become necessities. Say you take WHM up, when you want to cure someone you would make a macro where the first line equips your Light staff so you get the extra 10% to your cure, and then the second line does your actually magic (there will probably be more equipment swaps than that, this is just an example). You do not want to be messing with your equipment when your party members are dieing. A macro does it all instantly.

And don't think that just because you are not a mage you wont have to do so. There are some pieces of equipment that are best for the fight, while you are getting TP, and other pieces that will make your Weapon Skill do a lot more damange, but would not help in the rest of the fight very much. You make a macro to switch the equipment and do your thing, then switch back. Probably a couple different macros, as there are so many things to switch.

It is a good habit to get into. I would make basic ones like provoke ( /ja "Provoke" <t> ) just so you get in the habit of using them. I didn't start out with macros when I started, and it took a while to get used to using them once I got to the point of needing them.

And if you are using a controller there are buttons on it to pull up the macros. I don't know what they are on the 360, but on the PS2 they are the L2 and R2. I hardly every touch my keyboard either.
