Now I know about the exp caps where you have to talk to the guild to get past certain parts but I'm starting out fishing and I've already caught like four moat carp and several rusty buckets and crap but I never gain anything for it. Do I have to talk to the fishing guild in order to be able to gain fishing exp before starting off?

Also how do you use the Dem Gate Crystal? I'm hopeing to be able to use it because I believe I have a very long road to windhurst ahead of me.

You have to either have White Mage leveled high enough to use Teleport-Dem Spell and have the spell, politely (By politely that means don't spam) shout for a Teleport-Dem in one of the cities (Usually easiest in Jeuno since there are more people there than in the starter cities), or have a item that will teleport you there. You'll rarely get a free teleport anywhere so it may cost you between 1-2k for it so I insist on shouting sometihing like "/sh {Teleport-Dem} {Can I have it?} {Reward} 2k" or something to that effect (Make sure to use Auto-Translate in your shout ). Usually within a few mins somebody will send you a tell and ask you where you are and invite you to party to teleport you. Pay first lol, I've never heard of anybody ripping anybody off for gil. I remember one day me and my party got a teleport twice by the same person for free.

I dont know about the fishing really, you dont need to be part of a guild to skill up any craft tho just to turn in guild points. You do have to start on the correct fish for level 0 tho, if the fish are too high for your level you wont skill up and youll just break your rod all the time. Also theres the moon phase that helps which effects skillups plus fishing is one of the slowest crafts to skill up at the beginning.

Far as the teleport dem crystal you need to level to to 36 white mage and learn the teleport spells dem mea and holla. and level 38 for yhoat and altep i think, 42 for xacabard tele, once youve got those spells and you have touched all the associated crystals on the crags (should give you a key item if you touch the right crystal) Once you do that you can teleport at any of the crags. If your not a whm if you touch the crystals you can be teleported by a whm of the correct level.

Also once you hit 65 you can buy rings that teleport you to any of the crags and have a set number of charges.

Fishing is an extreme slow craft on leveling up. I've spent an entire day fishing until fatigue and only getting one skill-up some days you won't even see skill-ups. If your just starting out and doing moat carp though you will see skill-ups from them. They are just super slow.

Also the only time you have to talk to the Fishing guild is when you have to turn in your item to advance to the next skill rank.. ie. recruit to initiate...

While you do need to check wiki for skill caps of various fish, I can tell you that Moat Carp have a skill cap of 11. Just like the other crafts, you need to turn in a "test item" at level +8 to level +10 to increase in rank, or you will be capped at level+10.

Basically you just have to fish a LOT to get skillups, but you do have to fish for stuff with a skill cap higher than your current skill level.
