Hey! Hey! Listen!

Another newb here.
I've quit WoW, and now I'm stuck without a MMO. >3>
I've been contemplating whether or not to give FFXI a go, since I've heard mixed opinions about it, mostly negative ones.

Also heard that things progress reaaaallly slowly especially since you need a party with you most of the time...

Right now, it's either FFXI or Mabinogi for me. ;__;

Re: Hey! Hey! Listen!

It's not really surprising that you'd hear a lot of negative things about FFXI if you play WoW. They're pretty far apart in terms of what they appeal to.

WoW tends to be focused more on solo play, FFXI is focused more on group play (although it is possible to solo, and there are things to do if you don't have a party)

WoW tends to be more quick and easy, FFXI tends to be more long and difficult (although that isn't always the case, on both sides, speaking generally it is accurate)

WoW tends to have a lot of popculture references, FFXI's jokes are pretty much entirely in world. I can only think of a single joke that referenced something else, and that was in reference to another FF game (specifically, an NPC saying "He... called me a 'Spoony Bard'!")

WoW tends to look like absolute shit and give you pretty good control over the UI, FFXI tends to look pretty good and give you absolute shit control over the UI.

Basically, I'd try it. You can pick up a trial disk for about $4, which will last you a month. If you dislike it, it's a small loss.

Re: Hey! Hey! Listen!

Sadly none of the shops around here supply any trials for the game, and it seems like everyone here is out of buddy passes, so I'll either have to buy the whole lot or just not play it. No thanks to SE not giving out any free trials to save us the trouble... even WoW has it. :\

Re: Hey! Hey! Listen!

WoW doesn't really have a free trial, they still require credit card and personal info. If you really want a free trial, eve online has them.

I'm pretty sure there are web stores that sell trial disks.

If you're talking about the links to Gamestop and EBGames that they redirect you to, both says that they're "not for sale". =(

Hmm... the only thing I'm worrying about is if I don't like it. Then I'll be wishing that I had spent it on Mabinogi instead. =S

Re: Hey! Hey! Listen!

A MMORPG from Nexon NA (Maple Story, Audtion etc.)
They promote the game to be F2P, but it gets tiring really easy for those who don't buy their paid services. You won't even have access to their mainstream story quests if you don't subscribe to at least one of them.

Re: Hey! Hey! Listen!

You're going to regret any money you spend on anything if you dislike it. That doesn't mean it isn't worth it.

For $30, assuming you play an hour a day for that month, you've gotten 30 hours of entertainment-- that's more than even some RPGs provide, and definitely more than you'll get in most $30 games.

Re: Hey! Hey! Listen!

You make a solid point Feba. I'm still going to pick it up, and will most likely nab it for the PC, but may indeed grab it for the Xbox 360, because my harddrive is almost completely full, and I think I may regret tossing it onto an external (data transfer issues, etc... plus my external is nearly shot).

Sakota: I am in basically your shoes exactly. I am looking to get into FFXI, and am excited to try it but a bit hesitant from what I've heard. Currently I'm just finding out as much as possible about th3e game and its mechanics as possible and trying to pump myself up to the point where I have no choice but to buy it!

Happy Hunting
