What is "HNM"?
Minor correction, but since the other thread is closed, "HNM" stands for "High Notorious Monster", according to S-E. (That's "悪名高い怪物" in Japanese, or "Bad-name High Monster", which probably means "High-level notorious monster".)
The HNM entry in FFXIClopedia is more about how the players use the acronym, but at least now you can roll you eyes at S-E's official pronouncement--or correct people when they say 'H' in HNM means 'Hyper'. Up to you. (Kind of like how players use the term "subjob" instead of Support Job*, then misuse the term "support job" to label RDM and BRD and such instead conforming to S-E's term Support Role Job*. >_>; )

Re: What is "HNM"?
That same S-E page you mentioned clearly states Spirits Within is magical damage. That's about as wrong as you can get.
Also, HNM is a player-made term. S-E merely adopted it for that page.

Actually, what S-E says that it's a type of magical weapon skill, in the context that its damage is subjected to building resistance for certain monsters. Whether any monster actually exhibits this resistance (inconsistent damage) to Spirits Within or not, I do not know. ._.

Re: What is "HNM"?
Wouldn't all one need to test that is the necessary Sword skill and a monster "that /check as 'impossible to gauge.'"?
Also, I'm calling them Hydrated Notorious Monsters from now on. HNM is an unofficial term. Why so serious?

That confuses me. When I am fighting elementals in Campaign, all my other sword weapon skills damage drops significantly but Spirits Within damage stays constant like the BLU spell Poison Breath. I always thought it did magical damage because like Poison Breath, the change in damage was only seen with different mobs. For Example, with a Dark elemental in Campain Spirits Within and Poison breath damage increased (When compared to any Yagudo) while my melee and other weapon skills decreased significantly.

Re: What is "HNM"?
The damage for Spirits Within is calculated merely by your current HP times the TP modifier. It is, as the description says, "unavoidable" damage, and it remains consistent against almost every single target in the game.
Burning and Red Lotus Blades are your Magical WSs, as they are affacted by MAB and MDB, unlike Spirits Within.
Fast Blade, Flat Blade, and Vorpal Blade are all entirely physical. Standard rules for auto-attack apply.

Is Spirits Within Light Damage? (I am thinking that is why my damage increased against the dark elementals)

Re: What is "HNM"?
No. The damage formula for Spirits Within is consistent: you would see the same effects on a Light Elemental as you would on a Dark Elemental as you would on almost anything else. The only instance I have heard Spirits Within deviating from its formula would be against the walls in that one assault, and that's probably just because S-E thought ahead and figured that would be too easy.
So, because of its unique consistency, I like to think of SW as "spiritual" damage. That's just me, though, and nothing official.
Shining and Seraph Blades, however, are most definitely Light Damage.

Re: What is "HNM"?
Well, it all started with Itaz insisting a player-made term was officially pronounced Tro-PAY, and then I said that such a claim to officiality was just as silly as insisting Spirits Within was Magical.
