I was just wondering if his(her?) normal attacks are earth or physical based. Do they ignore defense and only check against resistance and magic defense?

Any answers would greatly help me choose gear for my 4-2 run.

Theres such a thing as a common thought that if you buff up/gear up your elemental defense, that it might help with not only ouryu but mobs in general, i for one do not believe that, the only thing that resembles elemental physical attacks is the en- effect some mobs have, and the spell aswell, and the special abilities.

Nevertheless, it would be wise to gear up with earth magic defense, he has stone spells that you would rather do without, if youre a tank, get both gear for physical damage and spell damage, and make macros for it, if you cant avoid getting hit by a stone spell, quickly change gear, all done.

I have read about Paladin gearing up with fire resistance against Tiamat and Bahamut v.2 and that they had really good results. The only thing about trying to gear up with Earth resistance for 4-2 is that you might not be able to find enough gear to make it effective.

I had to fight this wyrm 2 times for this mission. I think I just wore 'regular' tanking gear. Also I carried as many meds as I could hold. The first fight we lost when it used some kind of breath attack and killed me immediately. The second fight he chose not to do that, and we won pretty easily. I think my group was Pld, Drg, Blm, Smn, Whm, and Drk. We also farmed a bunch of mist melts (which is key in my opinion).

Well I saw this picture of a taru nin taking <50 damage hits from Tiamat thanks to his high fire resistance and I figured perhaps Ouryu is similar. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...h/img_0023.jpg

There is also Fairy Ring in Dynamis - Valkurm that I believe uses dark damage instead of physical damage. Its attacks ignore defense and go right through Invincible.

Yeah, I have read about that stuff. Be really interesting if you can make an Earth resist build and it work for you. The thing you will have a problem with is getting enough resist I think. The advantage someone has when fighting Tiamat is that there is no level cap, so they have access to any gear that their job can wear. For the Ouryu fight you will be limited to 50 cap so I would think you would be more limited. So the real question will be can you get your earth resist high enough with the gear available, and will doing so sacrifice other attributes that you need to tank with.

I have also read that you not only need to get your elemental resist high, but you need to have buffs on you at all times (like bar spells and songs).

Bar spells and elemental resist gear only effects the earth based spells/attack that Ouryu uses. That does not include his physical attacks. However, I am pretty certain that when Ouryu is flying, all of those attacks at that moment are earth based. Aside from barstone and bard carols (don't know if they are available at that level yet), gear increases in elemental resist are hard to come by at that level and probably not worth it.

You need a lot of resistance to reduce elemental damage from HNMs like Tiamat since Tiamat is level 90++(varies).

With that said, I'm fairly sure Ouryu in the mission BC is much lower level, and will require less elemental resistance. I've fought him several times in both the mission and in the uncapped Ouryu Cometh BC and in both cases earth resistance was very useful against his elemental attacks.

I can confirm that his normal attack while flying is elemental - earth resistance will help you against it. In addition, he casts earth spells unless Silenced in both flying and non-flying forms.

What earth resistance won't save you from, though, is Ochre Blast, one of his AoE WS that he can use when flying. I'm fairly certain that attack is Fire based (similar to Tiamat's Inferno Blast).

Thanks for the answers. I'm thinking of going with a standard defense set and perhaps bring with me some earth resistance gear for when he takes off. Having bar and carol would also be great. Garuda can also be used to tank Ouryu when he is flying.

Why bother with resistance gear? Just blackmail/bribe/beg 4 black mages and a bard to drag you in and sleep nuke him to death. Its nearly failsafe.

Aye. I love my fights challenging. I'm the type that goes through games at Lv1, or without using things like Sphere Grids and stuff...

My fights have to have a bit more pep in em.
