by content i mean like additions to the game that woud usually be added in patches. I mean if there are some things they know are not good about the japanese bersion and they are [planning to change in the new patch do you think that they will just work the cnages into the american version? I mean think of it this way. By the time the Amercian version is out im sure there will have been mutiple chnages due to updates so they may just work that in already. obviously they cant predict the bugs and stuff that they will be patching out but things such as balancing or like job reformatting do you think they will throw that in the beta to see how it works? i mean it is a beta test after all

it does seem quite possible. I mean, there is no real reason why they wouldn't (especially if we are on different servers) and it would perfectly explain why we would have an NDA. But, other than that, it seems pure conjecture at this point...

The people intervewed mentioned something about PvP, something that they already had it planned out, and were waiting for a good opertunity to introduce it. I'm guessing it's coming for beta.

They said they were waiting for a reason in the story, I doubt it'll be in the beta.

... wow. every single thing you said was utterly wrong. Dont spew crap from your mouth if you have no idea whats actualy going on.
1) PVP is being implimented into the game later on when the story line allows for it
2)Beta testers are NOT playing on the japanese servers
3)We are NOT testing translators. There is no such thing as a ffxi translator. There is no such program that will translate japanese to english, or english to japanese. It has been attempted before in early mmorpgs, and never worked.
I have no patience for people who try to pass off like they know something and lie.

Speaking of spewing crap, maybe you should read a little news before flaming. Americans will be sharing servers with the japanese, and they are doing a patch which will allow japanese players to ask simple common questions to americans and vise versa. This info was in an interview with the design team for FFXI about 2 weeks ago. The beta testers will all be on a seperate server of course, but you'll be playing with Japanese players and have a simple translater window when the NA version comes out.

umm, that's exactly what he said. beta testers will not play on the regular servers, american players will...

Quotes from SE (email replies to beta):

Thank you for your interest in the PlayOnline(TM), FINAL FANTASY(R)XI, and Tetra Master(TM) Public Beta Test.
The U.S. servers and Japanese servers will be completely independant, and accounts from one will not be playable on the other.
Once again, thank you for your interest and we hope to see you online!

You will be on new servers with new players. When the servers go live in the U.S. those servers will be only U.S. and you will play with all new characters.
Once again, thank you for your interest and we hope to see you online!

about the translation thing, I read a interview where it was said that a translation tool would not be used.
I have also seen the interview as well, and these quotes from SE along with all the other interviews I have read clash and dont agree with eachother. The information is totally opposite.

sending different e-mails out?? I've compared mine to a dozen others, and they were all the same and read as follows... there are some differences between the PS2 and PC ones, but not any of what you wrote:
Greetings and Congratulations!
This letter is to notify you that you've been chosen as a confirmed Beta
Tester to test PlayOnline(TM), FINAL FANTASY(R)XI and Tetra Master(TM) on
the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system. The Public Beta Test will
begin in June. A Beta Test kit including the Internal Hard Disk Drive (40GB)
(for PlayStation(R)2) will be mailed to the address you've provided in the
coming weeks with detailed instructions.
Important - Beta Testers
The HDD shipped for use in the public beta test for PlayOnline, FINAL
FANTASY XI and Tetra Master is only compatible for use with the PlayOnline,
FINAL FANTASY XI and Tetra Master beta test software. Use or attempted use
with any other software or use outside of the beta test may harm or
interfere with the operation of your PlayStation(R)2 system or other
devices.
Upon conclusion of the Beta Test, Sony Computer Entertainment America
requires you to return the beta test HDD in the original beta kit box using
the return-shipping label enclosed in your kit.
Once Sony Computer Entertainment America receives the beta test HDD unit and
in appreciation for your participation in the Beta Test, SCEA will send you
a new consumer HDD unit, free of charge.
Please reference the Beta Test Handbook for details (inside your Beta Test
Kit). If you have any questions, please reply to this email address and
include your full name in your letter.
Thank you for your continued interest and support of PlayOnline.
See you online,
PlayOnline Information Center Team

Crono is posting an email that he got after asking a question if i'm not mistaken. Anyways, i think both of you may be right. We will be on seperate serves for Beta and probably for the most part when the game goes live. However, it may be possible to go to a server with japanese players. What Grand Lethal is saying about the interview is true, so it would be surprising if that "translation" program was rendered useless. There will probably be some way of joining japanese servers once the game goes live. Or so i'd imagine judging by what has been said previously by S-E.

Thats the beta acceptance email. Notice the sentence
"If you have any questions, please reply to this email address and
include your full name in your letter."
Those quotes i posted are responses from SE from questions asked about JPN/NA servers.
EDIT: beat me to it sun2mid

*not going to comment more until my Beta Test arrives or gets his reply to his email he sent over a week and a half ago*
didn't mean to get so angry but I hate flames and especially when I have seen the info on other sites stating that he was right about what he read... even if it may be bunk now. All I know is I'll be happy with whatever they give us... long live FFXI and Square-Enix!

Staying on topic...
It is highly unlikely "Beta" will have any difference to the live service. Why? Because all of the currently "paying" customers for the Japan service will cuss out SE. I mean how would you feel if you were in that situation?

i wouldn't be upset at all if they were testing a new addition in order to keep it from being excessively buggy. Wouldn't you be a lot more annoyed if you were a paying customer, and you dowlnoaded a patch, or bought an expansion that was so laden with bugs that you couldn't even play the game properly? So, there is a logical reason why would could be testing new content. It's not very likely, granted, but this would be the time to do it. (and like i've said before, it would explain the need for the NDA)
There has been official word that Americans and the Japanese are sharing IN THE FINAL VERSION. I have a feeling that SE's robot is spewing beta info right now.

i think it would be so cool if the countries went to war and thats how they introduce the pvp. it would own so much... invading another country's city, like.. marching into bastok,
have like.. 10 alliances kill all

That is why they have what's called test servers :)
The one thing you folks have to remember is that all development is done in Japan. Why would the US have the privilige of getting new, or in this context, different content that of Japanese market. I see your point from a technical perspective, but from a business development view, it makes no sense.
Another thing is you have to define bugs, or rather categorize them. Beta for this particular product is IMO going to test connectivity. Bugs in the form of features and linguistics (localization) is minisclue compared to the task of making sure an MMO will work. Why you ask? Because the software is already shipping and you will see much less instances of severe bugs because the source code remains the same, it's most likely localization files/strings that may cause problems. Given There are legit bugs, but much fewer than the J release. Anywho, it's all IMO, like everyone else's post here ;)

Yeah!!!! Pvp. The game will last longer now.
PVP is what you do after all of the higher baddies have been taken care of in most MMORPGS. I Just hope it's completely consentual.
I thought this game would never get pvp. That was my only fear.
