Ok so im building a system here, heres what im going for:

Intel P4 2.4 Ghtz
1024MB DDR Ram
Radeon 9700 Pro 8XAGP video card
Creative Live 5.1 sound card
Asus P4S8X Deluxe motherboard (its 8XAGP Compatible like the 9700, does this make things any better?)

Also going to be using a Linksys wireless PCI card for my connection...not like this matters. But thats it.

How well would this run FFXI?

Looks good. Top of the line. I'm pretty sure you can get a benchmark test specifically for FFXI somewhere, I forgot where though.

In my opinion I think it will run more than great.

I'm pretty sure it will run FFXI like a charm, but just to see... read this thread and download the benchmark program and see what kind of score you get. It will tell you how good FFXI can run on your system. http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4307&highlight=benchmark

Meow, that's only 533 mhz bus. I'd consider getting a pentium 4 with 2.4C ghz and 800MHz bus, dual channel DDR400 ram, and a different motherboard.

The Intel D875PBZ is a nice MB. Get a pair of corsair DDR 3200 dual channel ram and that thing will smoke. If you want to overclock I'd go with a different MB but for a non-clocked system that MB rocks!

http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/bz/index.htm?iid=ipp_browse+motherbd_d875pbz&

This is a nice system if you plan to build one:

Intel D875PBZ Motherboard
1 GB Corsair DDR 3200 dual ram
3.06GHz P4 Processor
IBM Deskstar 120GB HDD ATA-100 RPM 7,200
Plexor Combo Drive 20X/10X/40XCDRW 12X DVD
350-400 Watt Power Supply
LARGE case (more room the better)

The only slight problem with this system is that HDD runs a little on the hot side and the massive Northbridge Heat Sink and CPU generate alot of heat but if you have a large enough case (with fans) that shouldn't be a problem. The layout of the motherboard is great for ventilation and tends to compensate for the heat. The cost of the setup is a round $1,300. Not a bad price for all of that power. If you want to shell out an extra $400 bucks you can get a water cooled case which will solve any heating issues.

As for a graphic's card the new NVidia cards shead the ATI cards in high res modes. I would go with NVidia for now.

hmmmmmmmmmm looks great to me ^.^ just remember nice case for that baby. keep it nice and open. cooling is freaking important. less you want to be the first to run a solid mass of metal as a comp. -=D personaly my set up is old. i'm to poor to update:

Pentium III 866mhz
Abit mother board(hell i don't remember which)
Geforece 3 Extasy TI 500
Audio platinum soundblaster
sony 8x/4x/32x cd
dvd player(non brand...crappy as hell)
1 gb of SD ram
a hell alot of fans.
all stuck in a nice antec server case ^.^

i run things perfectly fine usualy. but...my processor/video card are a bit old for today. running bare min on some. but all that ram puts me in a ok position. personally i'd like to run the new Geforce which is comeing out soon and a better chip. but. oh well....no cash no gear:sweat:

2357 bench mark -.-

First off, your system:
-----------------------------------
Intel P4 2.4 Ghtz
1024MB DDR Ram
Radeon 9700 Pro 8XAGP video card
Creative Live 5.1 sound card
Asus P4S8X Deluxe motherboard (its 8XAGP Compatible like the 9700, does this make things any better?)
-----------------------------------
This system is an ideal set up and will run XI just fine.

The new Canterwood mobo's are great but you really won't see a significant increase in performance compared to a 533FSB. Even if it supports 8x AGP, there is still a bottleneck with the bus architecture and CPU speed. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good enough bump to upgrade, I know because I have 5 at work that I deal with everyday running benchmarks.

Just a note for you very highend HW mongers, the new FX family of GPU's and 9800 series will require a power supply of 400 and higher. I have had cases where I ran these lines of cards at a lower power output with no errors, but in some cases (unknown) the driver will send an error message saying there is not enough power to run the card.

Just a tidbit about FF XI, the resolution for GUI and the resolution for backend textuer, which is the actual resolution for 3D models and the world are DIFFERENT. You can set them in the FF config tool application.
