im sure everyone has seen it now, in the beta email it says if youre chosen youll receive a free HDD. thats f-ing awesome, but that means they should also sell FFXI when it comes out for PS2 seperately from the HDD, right? i sure dont wanna pay for the HDD if i already got one for free.... comments anyone? maybe we can read about this in the future.

According to the representative and how they worded it, it "sounds like" this:

FF XI will come with a HD.
An HD may not come with FF XI.

But I don't see a reason why they should not have FF XI available to you seperately. It is also possible that they may include a voucher to allow you to buy FF XI discounted and without a HD.

OR, they may just give you a voucher to buy FF XI WITH the HD, but discounted so that it is like giving you a free HD.

Who knows?

I believe the EULA said they'll send you a HDD, and the other necessities, but you'll have to send them back once beta testing is over.

You have to return the HDD after the beta.

Once you return, then send you a free one.

I really do hope there's some special Beta HDD otherwise I'm afraid I don't see the logic in the whole thing of sending away a HDD just to recieve a new one..

there could be a significant amount of logic to having us send back the HDD only to get a new one. What if the beta testing one is bugged for some reason and the new one will be fixed? what is the new HDD is compatible with other games (EQOA - which though i have no desire to play, others may). Also, there could be a lot of legal issues requiring the return of the Beta HDD. The new one is simply a gift, and thus tax deductible, etc.

Ok maybe youre right...
I just thought that because I have seen that they have PS2:s which says TEST at the front (instead of PS2) as the game companies use to try their game at, so I thought this might be something simular like maybe It says BETA or sumthin...
But naaaa...

Well I guess your right and I'm wrong :P

Hmm,i got an acceptance e-mail,and if you read it carefully
it says that the HDD they will supply you with in the beta
kit, will only work with PLAYONLINE,so you gotta send it back
once the beta is over to get a retail HDD.:o

yep, thats true, they say not to use the beta HDD with anything else or you might mess something up, and once you return it, they'll send you a new one for free

Cool...

Hmmm will thre be an PAL beta as well or is there no need of having such thing since the games will be almost identical?
Cuz then I will surely sign up I want a free HDD toooo... :P

And btw if you have this Beta acc, can you use it for playing after Beta or is it deleted?

Just little curious :)
Would be fun if any1 answered though.

I'd need to see where in the beta agreement they say that they'll give you a retail one after you return the beta one. Because, if that's true, I rather wish I had signed up for the PS2 beta instead.

Greetings and Congratulations!

This letter is to notify you that you've been chosen as a confirmed Beta
Tester to test PlayOnline(TM), FINAL FANTASY(R)XI and Tetra Master(TM) on
the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system. The Public Beta Test will
begin in June. A Beta Test kit including the Internal Hard Disk Drive (40GB)
(for PlayStation(R)2) will be mailed to the address you've provided in the
coming weeks with detailed instructions.

Important - Beta Testers

The HDD shipped for use in the public beta test for PlayOnline, FINAL
FANTASY XI and Tetra Master is only compatible for use with the PlayOnline,
FINAL FANTASY XI and Tetra Master beta test software. Use or attempted use
with any other software or use outside of the beta test may harm or
interfere with the operation of your PlayStation(R)2 system or other
devices.

Upon conclusion of the Beta Test, Sony Computer Entertainment America
requires you to return the beta test HDD in the original beta kit box using
the return-shipping label enclosed in your kit.

Once Sony Computer Entertainment America receives the beta test HDD unit and
in appreciation for your participation in the Beta Test, SCEA will send you
a new consumer HDD unit, free of charge.

Please reference the Beta Test Handbook for details (inside your Beta Test
Kit). If you have any questions, please reply to this email address and

Thank you for your continued interest and support of PlayOnline.

See you online,

PlayOnline Information Center Team

hm. Well, I'll be. Maybe the reason they call it a "HDD Unit" in the seocnd paragraph is because they'll only ship the adapter, not the adapter+HDD.

sun2mid

no, that doens't make any sense, b/c you had to have an adapter in order to sign up for the ps2 beta. So why would they send you something you already have? It's obviously the hard drive.

this topic makes me want to shoot people....

yes, we get a free HDD, it doesn't say HDD adapter unit does it? i would hate to have missed something like that... also, how would we be able to test it if we had to buy our own HDD? it doesn't even come out till 1st quarter '04
