///Now i am really upset and deceived. Final Fantasy XI. You know what i'm talking about. Before, i always thought sony was a properous company and all.
BUT!, by delaying FFXI on ps2 and bringing your expension for EQOA (that by the way isn't even comparable to FFXI....eqoa is 2/10 compared to FFXI....) now you have fallen VERY LOW. I mean it. Cmon! you are part of square now if i'm not mistaken! you will lose LOTS of money on this since FFXI will be outdated when it will come out in Q1 2004....Oh and i was planning to get the ps2 version of FFXI when it'd come out...but i changed my mind. I will only get the PC version that comes out this october since you wont get profits from me getting the HDD. I really hope you will change your ways, as i REALLY AIN'T the only one who noticed your wrong ways of doing business. Delaying the HDD to prevent FFXI from coming out to get a little more money from your EQOA is the worst move you have made of all your company's history.
Sorry about this but i sure hope things will change by the end of E3.
By the way i am also part of the V.O.T.E. on your website, so consider my opinion on this as most of the "intelligent" gamers noticed that little "scheme" of yours....///
hehehe....i know its a desperate cause but its worth a try XD!! i'm a very passionate person you see

Obviously emailing, spamming, voicemail or threatening them with physical violence won't get them to change their minds. It could simply be that the hard drive isn't ready for distribution yet. Maybe Square/Sony want to give it a thorough test with the actual hardware during the PS2 beta. There could be a thousand reasons why the hard drive is delayed.
The answer is simple, don't buy the hard drive. Pick up the PC version and forget about the PS2 version. Besides won't the PC version actually be better in the speed and graphics department?
On a side note, why do you want to play the North American version anyway
sun2mid
05-14-2003, 11:31 AM
first of all, not all of us have the option to buy the pc version, so we can't just "pick it up"
Second, i can't imagine the HDD isn't ready for play. And if it's not, they would fix it during Beta, and they wouldn't need this excessive amount of time they are scheduling to do so. No, they are just trying to bump up EQ sales.

Here, this is what I said:
To whom this may concern,
I was really disapointed to hear about your release date that you announced at E3 for the HDD for the PS2. There doesn't seem to be any reason for you to withhold this product other than what you harshest critics seem to be coming up with now: that you are keeping it from the consumers to prevent them from playing games that would compete with your own MMORPGs - FFXI in particular. If this is true, and you are high-handedly denying your customers the right to choice, then this is an insult. I've always been a loyal Sony customer, and this is an insult to my intelligence and loyalty to you. Most of all, though, it hurts your reputation. You must remember how an extensive poll was done a few years ago asking people what brand/corporate name they associated with "cool". Sony was 3rd place, I was always proud to say, narrowly being edged out by Nike and Tommy Hilfiger. I was always so proud to tell people why I ardently supported the PS systems 1 and 2 over Nintendo, which I grew up with: because you had the best games, because you were the gutsiest when it came to innovative ideas, because you were the COOLEST. Your reputation has been amazing. You're truly a company that stands above the crowd. But this... stooping. I don't what to think, now.
I hope you reconsider your release date, for the sake of your own reputation.
Cheers!
****** etc.
So, c'mon everyone: write write write!!!

Now, you may want to rephrase that since you obviously didn,t think 2 seconds before posting this... how about we don't read, write AND speak japanese at all ? What if some of us are too respectful of other to just run in circles shouting "IS THERE ENGLISH SPEAKER HERE ???"
Not wanting to start a flame here... just that your post was REALLY "I'm better that all of you" and I'm sure that wasn't what you wanted :)
Sorry, but I'm pissed off today...

Here's what i wrote:
Hi, first of all I would like to say that I have been a huge supporter of the
playstation franchise
since it's inception. However, I must say that I am extremely upset with recent
actions by the
company regarding Final Fantasy XI. Latest news says that Sony will not be
releasing the HDD which
will be required to play this game for on the ps2, even though the game is, and
has been ready for
play. There appears to be no other reason for such an action except that Sony
wishes to delay the
release of Final Fantasy XI in order to promote Everquest Online. This is very
painful to see, and
if it is true, and will most likely backfire. As a result of this action alone,
I will not be
playing Final Fantasy XI for the ps2, but instead will buy the PC version. I
can only hope that
this news is not true, or that things will change and sony will release the HDD
earlier to allow
Final Fantasy XI to come out at at least the same time as the PC version. Thank
you for your time,
and I hope that my faith in Playstation and Sony is not gone forever.

Sorry Vejiita, that wasn't my intention. I assumed that Yoko was Japanese so I was wondering why he'd want the NA version. Sorry about that, offending anyone wasn't my intention.
Well written Vale, unfortunately I don't think anything could get them to reconsider. When it comes to money, I'm sure Sony is like every other company around. Then again it NEVER hurts to try ;)

When the Isrealites were in the dessert wondering around and Moses went up the mountain to get the 10 Commandments, the Isrealites got impatient and started building idols, partying it up, and generally ticking off the Almighty. God told Moses what his peeps were up to, and said He was sick of it, and would destroy them and start all over again and find another group to be His "chosen". Moses appealed to God's reputation, and God changed His mind.
So, I figure, if God can change his mind with an appeal to His reputation...
so can Sony Corp.

hehe, Well put Vale. But God had something to gain from that. If God destroyed all the people he'd have to go searching for another group, and who wants to create more work for yourself? Sony on the other hand will lose something, and even a single dollar loss is unacceptable to these companies.
On the other side the argument, is Square was really that upset with Sony they could just move to the Xbox. I read somewhere that FFX-2 sold nearly 1.4 million copies on it's first day. That in itself should pull alot of weight. So it's not like Square is totally helpless.
Either way, in the end we are screwed.

won't sony end up losing more money if they don't release FFXI earlier b/c now so many less people are going to buy the HDD. Also, they are the one's publishing FFXI here in NA and they have a lot of SE stock. So, won't they lose just as much money this way? They're just being stupid.

sony is missing the point they think by postponing the hdd people will buy egoa instead of ffxi buh as soon as ffxi is on computer it be bought like hell and then when the hdd comes out it not bought as much because no real use to get ffxi because you have it on pc and don't want to restart playing so sony ends up getting way less money

Well if anyone is curious here is the responce I sent Sony.
**************************************************
Of course as I'm aware from examining other websites, I'm sure by now you must of gotten a few people sending a message in regards to Final Fantasy XI. I am very cursious as to why the move was made to push the PS2 version back to the first quarter of 2004. The info I'm getting is stating that this action was to give your EverQuest expansion a chance to make some profit.
As far as I'm understanding it from websites I've visited, many populated with 4,000 or more registered users that are often active on the websites, this idea seems like a bad one. Most of people on those websites/boards have made declerations that they are NOT going to buy the PS2 version if they push it back to the first quarter of next year.
To me as far as I'm seeing this, seems like going threw with that action can end up with Sony loosing a popentially big amount of money that the EverQuest expansion most likely won't make up for. So if you can I'd really like to know why such a strategy?
Thanks as a potential buyer of the PS2 version of Final Fantasy XI, that is considering the PC version instead as a result of this new information of the marketing strategy coming from the E3 event.
Thanks Again,
Chris
************************************************** *
Think messages along those lines you'll tend to get a better responce from them then. I've gotten many free items from a variety of places, by just doing what I can to point out the obvious to them. Don't think Sony will give me anything free for that but hey if they bring the release date back down, then it's worth it.

V.O.T.E for PS2 is such a scam. They just want to send you advertisements and get info from you so they can make more money.
All they care about is making money. They don't care about releasing a prodect to provide the best entertainemnt.
They know FFXI qill kill their EQOA project. It's the only reason I can see for delaying FFXI.
I'm very disapointed in Sony.
For anyone else that is a member of V.O.T.E see my post at

and feel free to voice your optinion as one of the "Elite" members that are there to voice how you want games to be.
Hehe damn right on this one Hachi. They're using us to get more info from the players themselves to get more money, but on the other side if this can help them getting better games out then i'll go all the way ;) oh and i'll post there also.....this just might make them realize a bit more lol..... oh and no im not japanese XD!! Its just a name i REALLY like. REALLY. XD
oh and really nice comment Macht. The best i've seen now including mine XD!! Tells them the good part of releasing the game earlier....
EDIT: done. I wrote my comment as well. Now lets see if there are other "intelligent" v.o.t.e.'s in there.....

Heres my 2 gil...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
To whom it may concern-
It is difficult for me to describe my dissapointment in your handling of the release of the Hard Drive in North America. As an ardent Sony supporter, I bought the Network adaptor for the sole purpose of one day being able to use it in conjuction with the Hard Drive to play Final Fantasy XI. Over the months myself, as well as other FFXI/Hard drive hopefuls, have been mislead with release dates and or left in the dark with a general lack of information. This treatment of your customers seems to show a general lack of care for pleasing them. This or, as some have suggested, your desire to allow EQOA to saturate the market before allowing its competitor (FFXI) to be released, is quite frankly insulting to many customers. It seems that Sony has become more concerned with lining their own pockets than satisfying their fans. I realize that I am most likely fighting for a lost cause here, but I just felt that I needed to give voice to the frustrations of the many dissapointed fans. It is completely unreasonable that a product that was released about a year ago in Japan should take this long to come out stateside. Allowing the PC version to be released before the PS2 version simply defies logic. Very few will buy the Hard Drive if one of the few games that will be available for it is already available on PC. Though it is unlikely, I strongly hope and advise you to reconsider this move for the satisfaction of your fans and the success of your company.
Sincerely,

Message from Consumer:
i have noticed that ffxi is coming out on the pc octtober this year and fer the
ps2 its coming out
the first quarter of the next year with the HDD by postponing the HDD till after
ffxi comes out for
the pc YOU WILL GET LESS MONEY because people will buy ffxi for the pc first
and so when it comes
out for the ps2 with the hdd not much people will buy it because they already
have the game making
you sell alot less HDDs which then makes you gain less money you should have the
HDD released
earlier so that both ffxi pc and ps2 version comes at same time or ps2 version
comes first so more
HDDs are bought and much more money is gained PLEASE CONSIDER THIS

To whom it may concern,
I fail to understand what you stand to gain by alienating consumers by delaying the release of the HDD by a full year over the original tentative date. Many of my friends have eagerly awaited the release of Final Fantasy XI, and we have been screwed over time and time again for being loyal fans. You delay because you wish to get more profit for yourself, and if your consumers were ignorant morons, perhaps you'd succeed. However, we do not like being led around and forced to jump through hoops. I bought the Network Adapter for the mere reason that I would at some point be able to play Final Fantasy XI with it someday. I find your tactics despicable, you have lost a loyal customer today.

Yeah, ideally i'd want it released now... Realistically the release date for the game on PS2 should at least coincide with the PC release date if not surpass it. Friggin' Sony. Also, how different would they need to make the already existing Hard Drive to work on NA PS2 systems? C'mon gimmie a break. This is not helping the console community one bit.

I'm not sure if it's realistic of us to expect them or anyone else to do that if they haven't said anything about it. I mean, if they announced thier intentions today, how long would the development process take?
Furthermore, don't patent/copyright laws place a restriction on the development and production of generic versions of an innovation. Pharmacutical companies couldn't make generic versions of acetaminophen until Tylonol had the rigths to produce it exclusively for 10 years. It's like that with all drugs. After 10 years, the compnay has to divulge how the drug is engineered. I don't think the same time frame applies for technological innovation, but I imagine there is a certain amount of time where the makers of it have exclusive rights. I'm not familiar enough with patent law to be sure (boring stuff).
Thoughts?
ur right valera....i'm not sure neither about the time limit for other companies to "copy" a product in the gaming industry but look at all those 3rd party controllers and all....it doesn't take much time before they get released after the original ones....Also its certain that the first company (sony here) that "invented" the product has priority on releasing it....so sorry but no, we wont have a 3rd party company to save us about that darn HDD.....

You bring up an interesting point about how generic controller for the PSX/PS2 were out after not too long (and there were generic memory cards, too), but I wonder if that's alot different than the HDD because even if you buy a generic contoller, you aren't able to do anything new that you could with an official Sony controller, whereas a generic HDD would allow you to play other games that would be in more direct competition with Sony's business with EQAO, etc. Maybe there's a very specific line drawn in the sand by the courts that distinguish between the two kinds of patent rules and strike the balance between preventing monopoly and protecting patent and copyright priveleges of innovators. I mean, maybe that time limitation on something "like" an HDD is longer (maybe even alot longer) than the time limit on something "like" a controller or memory card.
Bottom line, you're absolutely right: we aren't going to be seeing a generic HDD any time soon.
