just a your thoughts topic cuz im bored
lately ive been playing around with martial/joy set u for weapons. You know what ive found is sad. I can get usually 250-300 fast blades on mamool. Where as i only get 400-500 with savage blade.
In the time it takes me to get tp for savage blade ive let off 2 fast blades for more damage (or as much if i get a high end savage).
Is it just me or is our best sword weaponskill (outside of vorpal) truly the one we learned at lvl 3. Or am I missing something.
I mean even without martial fast blades still yeilds more damage then 1 savage (since it is garbage before 300% tp.)
I have a decent +STR setup for FB, and a good STR/MND for savage (maybe its because I have to split it.)
If anyone has idea about lol sword weaponskillsI am all ears.

Burning/Red Lotus isn't bad for us either, as MAB affects it and AFAIK defense doesn't. I'm no expert on the matter, though, so I can't say much else with any certainty. -- Pteryx

Savage Blade damage for RDM isn't going to be spectacular without pumping up your MND.

There are a couple of exceptions (Evisceration, Asuran Fists) but in general they suck. Savage Blade in particular is especially lol-worthy, because even at 300 TP it's nothing spectacular.In the time it takes me to get tp for savage blade ive let off 2 fast blades for more damage (or as much if i get a high end savage).Are you parsing this? A 300 TP Savage Blade will on average do slightly more damage than two 200 TP Fast Blades. Either way, if it bothers you, just stop saving TP. You won't lose anything because Savage Blade's fTP mod is 1.75 at 200 TP, exactly half of what it is at 300 TP, so you're using half the TP to get half the damage. Perfectly proportional.
Side note: any given amount of STR is better than an equal amount of MND even for Savage Blade. MND is only useful when you can get larger amounts of it, or when there isn't any STR to equip in that slot anyways.
Burning Blade will put out some respectable numbers but I don't know how it'll stack up against Savage Blade. Red Lotus Blade is a moot point since if you have that, you should be using Vorpal Blade.
If you don't want to do loldamage, you have precisely two options, barring relic weapons: you sub /WAR, /DRK, or /BLU and use Vorpal Blade, or you get a Blau Dolch and use Evisceration.

I wonder if /DRK and Absorb-MND for Savage Blade with a Martial Anelace would be a decent substitute for MND, Seeing that there's not much MND gear appropriate for Weapon Skills (Errant Pigaches are just outright SILLY with what I can salvage from my current gear). Maybe I'll try it out tonight before Dynamis.
A Spirits Within @ 300% TP is fine too. Probably won't make any difference with the Martial Anelace, but it would be hilarious if it did.
I'll also have to do some tests on Campaign Mobs to see how well I put out Vorpal Blades with a Mensur Epee on /DRK and/or /BLU, if I ever get a hold of one.

Regarding the OP, tailoring towards the MND mod, and practically any secondary WS mod for any sword WS ever unless you have capped fSTR is pointless. As Armando said, in equal amounts STR will always add more damage, that's it. Also, Savage Blade just sucks with less than 300 TP. It is only slightly better than Fast Blade at 100 and 200 TP, it's just a shit weaponskill to begin with that generally has more value as a Light opener than as an actual source of damage. If you're /NIN most times you'd be better off using a Dagger for Evisceration. Multi-hit critical WS' are just more powerful by design.

I thought MND was the primary on Savage Blade and STR was secondary.

The % stat mods are all technically called 'secondary' modifiers, but yes MND has a greater %. Basically the important thing to know at 75 is that every 4~ STR is going to add 2~ to base damage, while every 4~ MND will also add 2~, but STR will also add a slight amount of Attack, which makes it better since the increase to base damage is the same with equal amounts of either stat.

Yeah, I came to realize this after a few swings. And agreed on Absorb-VIT. Absorb-AGI also helped me out with skilling up my shield a bit (and some parrying)...but then again my Shield skill is pretty damn low to begin with: around 100 at the moment.

I had a huge grin on my face once I saw my LR+Souleater Vorpal did...I believe it was 546, on a Yagudo. Martial Anelace ftw.

Seriously though, that weaponskill is effed up, it consistently does way more damage than it should possibly be able to but I can't for my life figure out why...anyways I'll save that for another thread.
Back to RDM meleeing, while Blau is the obvious tops, don't forget that the Misericorde is still a solid, affordable Dagger for when you are doing things as /NIN or fighting mobs with a piercing bonus.

Callisto, feel free to PM me about Detonator. Maybe I can think of an explanation. Pretty hard to suggest anything with no details =P
As for Misericorde, I'd recommend Martial Knife over it. Practically the same stats, and the TP bonus will likely be more useful than 2 VIT, 2 DEX, 2 MND, and MP+10 for Evisceration. It's not terribly expensive, at least not on Midgard.

Or you could just use Evisceration. Martial knife's not bad. Can energy steal if you need mp from those mage mamool.
Lately I've been wondering how feasible I can make Sidewinder for xp. It really takes r. acc overdose, but seems like I can get 80+ ranged acc as is, plus food, and the 22 from /rng traits. Maybe someday they'll give another round of combat skill merits category maximum so I could have 226 skill instead of 210. But meh, that's a lot of work and a forced subjob choice for what'd probably be lackluster damage and prone to missing.
