View Full Version : 8000+ POL Benchmark Score ~ Game still glitches/crashes regularly

Defian

I have been having problems playing FFXI ever since I built this new computer in January. Originally I installed Vista but I figured the vista/ffxi issues were the cause of my glitches so I uninstalled vista, formatted, and reinstalled XP pro. I still get the same glitches except its getting worse and worse.

Sometimes the game runs totally fine for hours. Other times I can be just logging into the game and bam the graphics suddenly distort. I see wierd colors (the guard at the valkurm dunes outpost looked like he was wearing a rainbow helmet O.o), my character looks like he is wearing different armor, or even sometimes the screen glitches up, freezes, and then my computer crashes.

I have tried every different nvidia driver I could find and same results.

I figured I would D/L the POL benchmark program just to see if I could replicate the glitches there. I was amazed when it made it all the way through the test and I ended up with a score above 8000, and absolutely no graphics glitches.

What the heck is going on here?

Here is my DXDIAG:

Since I note that you're using an 8600, I'll point out that there's a whole stickied thread devoted to issues with that card over on the forums for a particular popular third party utility which may be useful. I'm not sure if the mods are okay with linking to those forums, but it's not hard to find. I'd make sure that isn't relevant to your problem first. That said, there are two things I would more generally suspect for issues like this.

1) Bad driver install. Sometimes certain driver versions might have problems, or leave behind problematic pieces. I don't have the link handy but on the same site as that link about the beta forceware drivers for FFXI is a stickied thread about how to cleanly uninstall old drivers. I used Detonator RIP in place of the commercial software recommended there, but otherwise followed that procedure.

2) Failing card. It is possible that the card itself is having problems. This is more likely for instance if it is overclocked. If it's fairly new, however, it may not be the most likely explanation.

Did you try the 174.74 version of the drivers? It's beta but I've heard good things. I believe my son uses them now since he switched to NVIDIA.

GeForce Release 174 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_174.74.html)

"Numerous game and application compatibility fixes."

Don't forget to turn off firewalls and even virus protection. And uninstall the old drivers and make sure all components are cleaned out of your system. yadda yadda I'm sure you know the drill.

in your FFXI Config menu, what are your settings at? Foreground/Background resolution? Bump-mapping enabled? If you turned everything WAY up b/c you have a nice rig, try toning it down...just a thought if it applies to your situation

Might be 1 of 3 things. Driver issue, Bad card issue, or not enough power going to the card.

I see no reason why your system cant run FFXI on its max settings (which arent heavy as compared to other Pc game)

Lunaryn

That's a good point. What's the maximum power draw on your power supply? This should be printed on a label on the side if you look inside the case. Also, how many physical drives does this system have?

little ninja

Could very well be a failing power supply. If it gets a lack of volts it can shutdown or freeze. This can also cause damage to the card as well. Also it might be overheating. The G.C will sometimes freeze or crash. This is a saftey feature for pc's to do this. Its to save the system from totally going boom.

My system has a thing called Nivida Monitor. It keeps track of my power settings for me. It also gives you an idea of the temp going on in your system. For me I will see what it runs just sitting idle and what it runs maxed out.

it's definitely not a question of "is my system good enough", b/c your system is probably 3x what you need to play. start small, look for updated drivers, then address the hardware situation above. g/l ^^

Sorry I've been very busy today but here's what I've done so far:

Uninstalled the previous nvidia driver 174.74 I downloaded a program called Driver Cleaner Pro. I booted into safe mode, ran the Driver Cleaner Pro, and installed the recommended driver for FFXI by nvidia version 169.17.

I played the game for about an hour today with the settings settings fully turned up.

Lumaryn: My card is running at stock settings. Haven't totally ruled out bad card but I really, really hope it isn't.

TheGrandMom: I already was running 174.74.

Zoltar: When I was experiencing these issues I had all config settings at the minimum. I turned them up to try and replicate the issue. At the benchmark I'm at I should be able to run the game no problem all the way up.

LittleNinja: My computer case is a Smilodon ATX612BWP http://http://computers.pricegrabber.com/cases/m/23214832/details/st=product_tab/ (http://computers.pricegrabber.com/cases/m/23214832/details/st=product_tab/) . It has a total of 6 fans, one of which is blowing directly on the GPU. I find it hard to believe its overheating but I guess I can't totally rule it out. I will download nvidia monitor just to make sure. The power supply included in the case is the one I am using still and it is a 500w power supply.

I have been having this problem since I built the computer in January. Is it possible for the GPU or power supply to be bad but still work for 99% of the things you use them for?

Anyway I will keep you all updated. I plan on leaving the game on all night in lower jeuno just to see if it can make it.

Ihad a computer that ran a few animation programs, played movies and videos over and over. An it frooze a couple times on the CoD4 demo. A week later my rig was dead. I checked everyhting and just gave up and did a full rebuild.

If you fresh installed your drivers and made a clean sweep of any old drive. Then I would personally wait to see what happesn. I would next keep an eye on temps. See if it shoots up. I would also go into Bios and see if it does it in there and compare.

If it still occurs its all about breaking down the rig and testing different parts. IF you get to that point I would suggest taking it to a computer shop. 50 bucks they will figure it out allot faster then you or I could. Not to mention they have everything there to swap out parts and test power supplies.

Well the same day I said I would leave the game on all night I had the problem. Only this time the computer froze when I was in the middle of D/Ling Nvidia Monitor.

Everything looks good as far as Nvidia Monitor can see.

I also downloaded Intel Desktop Utilities earlier today. Almost immediately it started throwing error messages at me:

When I am monitoring the power through Hardware monitor --> Power here are my voltages:

+12v --> 12.242
+5v --> 5.179
+3.3v --> 3.402
Other/Unknown Voltage --> 1.248
Processor Vccp --> 1.105v

Now the Intel Desktop Utilities shows the actual voltage and also a meter with basically a votage meter on it showing the high, normal, and low voltages. The +12v, +5v, and +3.3v are always high. Bordering the high end of the green and almost into the yellow of the voltage gauge.

Does it sound like I have a bad PSU here? Is there any way to have a PSU tested or is it just one of those things where if the computer is running it's working correctly?

Personally this would be the limit of my expertise and I would ask someone to have a look at the PSU and see if it's faulty. But FFXI places way more of its load on the CPU than the GPU so this would explain why it is FFXI that is causing your computer to die.

Power supplies are relatively cheap. SO swapping it out will take very little time. I would ditch your 500 watts and focus in more on the 700-750 watts.

If you want to check out whats going on you should take your Pc to a computer shop. They will test it fo ryou. It might not be yourPSU it might be a short somewhere or somethig not grounded right. Though I am not to sure what problems that would cause. Usually they will charge you about 50$ to look it over. But maybe cheaper depending on your stroe.

Cheap? I don't consider $130 for 650 watts at Circuit City, cheap. I think the 700 watt one was $180. Of course, you can find a cheaper ps on the internet but if you are in a hurry, as we were, then the local store prices are not cheap one bit. Even on the internet a decent 700-750 watt ps are over a hundred dollars and I don't think too many people are going to consider that cheap.

Now that I think about it when I assembled the computer it didn't come with enough brass standoffs to bolt every hole in the motherboard down. I have 9/12 holes filled.

Could this possible be causing grounding issues? Or does it sound more like a faulty PSU?

Well I don't know this guys financial status. Nor do I know his living habits. As for myself its easy for me to grab a part or 2 because I live close to a computer warehouse. This guy may not. But considering he has already ordered parts from the past. That he may be willing to order again.

Second you just have to look at his specs. Hes running a highend card, a bunch of fans, and a highend CPU. I haven't even bothered to check the mobo stats, the ram stats. This is a highend system. No reason to cheap out on the PSU. If I were him I wouldnt even drop lower then 600watts.

Lastly I have no clue why youd complain about a PSU price. Especially since you were willing to drop 1400 bucks on a couple of consoles with no games when it came out..

Not 100% sure to be honest. My old computer had missing stand offs but it ran fine and im talking 4 yrs fine. But the one system my friend brought in wasnt even starting. He was missing like 3 standoffs out of 12. I put on 3 more standoffs and it fired right up.

It could very well be the issue. Especially if its missing it in a certain spot. But like I said its best to ask people who see these issues on a daily basis. Just call a computer shop and ask them. They will more times then not verbally Q you in on the issue.

None, Just confused how a vital part ( that you really really need) is so damn expensive at 130 bucks. But other things 6times that much aren't. Besides if this is a true story. Then its has surely made its money back 10fold by now. Business, networking, hobbies.An whatever else you do on your system.

Besides the OP told you it wasnt driver related. Maybe you should concentrate on helping him
