I was once an avid FFXI player, playing since the game debuted on the PS2 in America. After about a year or two of playing, the game was taken from me. I got it back, but my character was lost, having breached the 6 month time period.

I have often wanted to return to FFXI but with my computer in the sorry state it is in, I had to investigate other avenues. After discovering a downloadable on the PlayStation Store entitled, "PS2 System Data", an idea sparked in my head. Seeing as how I still have the game disc, and the PS3's memory drive is a HDD and working in conjuction with the downloadable, would it be possible to play FFXI on an 80GB PS3?

Much Appreciated,
Rei

The PS2 System Data download was released back in launch window so 60GB units could install and play FFXI. When the 80GB unit launched, there was no compatibility with FFXI because the installation process hanged.

With version 2.00 and 2.10 updates, Sony has apparently fixed all issues with the original release of FFXI running on 80GB PS3s, according to their database (http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus). The Vana'diel Collection 2008 for PS2 launched with no backwards compatibility issues with the 80GB PS3. Here's what it says:

Final Fantasy XI (w/ Play Online - HDD Only)

The following conditions have been confirmed on PS3 System Software Version 1.92: At a specific point during the installation process, the title hangs. All conditions have been resolved on PS3 System Software Version 2.00.

Final Fantasy XI (w/ Play Online - HDD Only)

The following conditions have been confirmed on PS3 System Software Version 1.92: At a specific point during the Create Character process, the title may hang. All conditions have been resolved on PS3 System Software Version 2.00.

Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia

The following conditions have been confirmed on PS3 System Software Version 2.00: Due to issues with the installation of Final Fantasy XI, the user is unable to play this title. All conditions have been resolved on PS3 System Software Version 2.10.

Final Fantasy XI: Treasures of Aht Urhgan

The following conditions have been confirmed on PS3 System Software Version 2.00: Due to issues with the installation of Final Fantasy XI, the user is unable to play this title. All conditions have been resolved on PS3 System Software Version 2.10.

Final Fantasy XI: Wings of the Goddess

No major problems for this title.

Final Fantasy XI: Vana'Diel Collection 2008

No major problems for this title.
You should be able to install FFXI fine on a 80GB PS3 if their database is accurate. I don't have a 80GB unit to test it out but you might want to look around and find someone who has done it to make sure. If not, it's worth a shot as it looks like there are no longer any problems installing and running the game.

You probably still need to download the PS2 System Data file. What it does is partition about 11GB of hard drive space and sets it up to emulate a PS2 hard drive so the game can be installed without making any changes to the process.

So even with the very first version, which contained the original and the first expansion, Rise of the Zilart, I'd still be able to play? This is just to clarify, as I will be testing the theory once this post is finished.

Sidenote: Would it be better to just get The Vana'diel collection, which I assume holds all the expansions to date excluding Wings of the Goddess, to keep my version current with everyone else's?

I was able to put FFXI:RoZ and ToAU on my 80 gig PS3 after I got the recent firm ware DL. However I still can't get wotg on it says there is an error of some sorts. (Don't own a ps2 CoP CD which is why it is not on their either.)

Well...after all the installation fun....I went to register and I put in my old PlayOnline Registration code and it kept saying it was invalid. So, then I thought they might still have it on file, and I just started a member name...but no dice. So does that mean I have to obtain new PlayOnline information? And if so...how would I go about doing that?

Have you used your reg code to create account before? If so, you can not reuse the code.

You should be able to log in with your original account you created tho. Have you written down your POL ID and password?

Reijinku

Yes, I have them on hand. I tried using them with a different member name, but it told me one or maybe both were wrong. Realistically though, this account hasn't been used in maybe 2+ years. If that matters at all.

Indeed, hope you wrote down your ID and password. If you did, just click on... er... what was it called again? Create Member? Add Member? Ah whatever, you'll know what it is once you see it.

If you don't remember it... Hello new character.

Edit: Never mind. Looks like you have it. Hoozah!

Then how do I get a new POL reg code then? My old ones aren't any good.

Sidenote: I thought I might add, POL Viewer has crashed a couple time when I tried to use my keyboard...something wrong there?

If you have your original login and password, you shouldn't need to re-register anything. Registration codes are locked into the account they are used on, and never expire, so as long as your PlayOnline account is still active, you should be be able to set up a POL User with the correct login credentials in the Viewer and get back in that way to re-activate your Content IDs (BTW, make SURE you use the reactivate option, and not create new content ID option).

If it's been 2+ years, you'll need to contact Square-Enix about getting a character restoration done, more likely than not. Make sure you don't create a new character with the same name or you'll be forced to pick a new name.

But, my original POL ID and Password aren't working either. I get to the part where I put it in and it says it's invalid... But, then again, my POL account isn't active I think.

Nah, if they were the right ones, you'd go through to a little box that says your "account is suspended for unpaid fees, please pay to reactivate blah blah blah".

So pretty much, you either have your password or ID wrong. See if you made a typo or something to that extent.

I've done it several times, and it says the same thing...but I'll try again...what other choice do I have?

EDIT: I tried it a few more times, and still nothing. I even watched my fingers type in every letter. I didn't have a typo. I just dont unserstand how the POL ID and Password I have written down aren't working....Is there any way to get a new ID, Password, or Reg code?

no but if you have your old codes still, you can call SE and give them your CC info along with name and the old code, and they will give you the info you need

Not to sound noobish, but what's CC, and what all info would I need to tell them? Please spell it out for me.

Sidenote: How would I get ahold of Square-Enix?

Much Appreciated.

POL's number should be in the back of the manual. Let your parents take care of it.

....I'm 18 and fully capable of handling the situation. I just want to make sure I've exhausted all avenues that I can do myself before needing to call POL to solve the problem.

in this case, your going to need to call them, or buy another copy of the game, and start over.

I downloaded it on my 80gb PS3 and I was vastly disappointed.
The obvious reason being the lack of any polishing from the PS2 version being played on the PS3, but my main issue is connectivity.

I have Verizon FiOS and my internet is retardedly fast, but I have so many dmn problems connecting to Playonline it is unreal. I have only been successful in logging in through the intitial log in and sometimes even then I am royally screwed.

I have searched for an answer to this problem and the only answer I found was to play it on my 360. Problem Fixed.

Note: I have 6 other connections that do just fine with connecting to internet and I have used direct hook-up and the wireless internet function on my PS3 with no increased success rate. I think there is something wrong with the Playonline side of this particular issue.

Why would it? It's a PS2 game.

And quite honestly, given how badly Sony screwed SE over last time, I don't see SE being very eager to port FFXI to Sony's new platform either.

Yeah I mean I understand it, but it just boggles my mind that they couldn't at least put some kinda patch that if you played on the PS3 with FFXI it would recognize, it offer the patch and would, at the very least, play it on par with the 360.

would not work like that anyway, FFXI is run on the PS3 through PS2 "mode" so its still like its being played on a PS2

Well, I called them and spoke with the billing people, they said my account was deleted. So there's basically no way to get my old account back. But she did tell me about a "Return Home Campaign", they have that restores deleted accounts on file. The last one ended on Feb. 29th, and the next one is probably in a year.

But she said since I have the stuff already downloaded and only need the reg codes, I can just go out and buy a FFXI Starter Pack for 1.99 and just start over. I'm gonna do that while waiting for the Campaign to come back. But since the starter pack only has the original version and not RotZ, I'm currently on hold with their Technical Support to find out if I need to buy a new version of the exspansion.

I'm hoping not, since the content for the PS2 comes with RotZ, then I can just buy a RotZ reg code for 9.99, and thus, have the game back.

Indeed, backwards compatibility on the PS3 doesn't work that way. It does not play on the new hardware like it does with the 360; the PS3 uses a mixture of software and hardware for BC, the games actually run on PS2 hardware included in the console, so it plays as if it were playing on an actual PS2. The best that can be done is that the PS3 hardware can upscale the signal and smooth out the image to give a slightly better output; it cannot actually upscale the rendering of the game like the 360 does with some of its titles. A patch wouldn't work because there's not really a way to alter the game in any way specifically for running on PS3, as it runs just like it would on a PS2.

Well, the PS3 does have a PS/PS2 Upscaler and Smoother. I tried them on a few PS and PS2 games and it polishes them up a little. Not drastically, but there's still a slight difference.

EDIT: Nvm Pai, you already said that. XD Didn't see it.

Ah, I see I did not realize that. I am not as computer savvy as some, so I appreciate the enlightenment.

I do wish they would put out a PS3 version though, and maybe even offer some kind of incentive for doing so, so that they can expand more with FFXI. They have stated numerous times that they are approaching the limits of the PS2 and adding things and "dumbing" them down for the PS2 is starting to become harder and harder.

I know that many cannot afford a PS3, so that is their reasoning, but I think to keep adding all the things they want to, eventually the PS2 will have to be phased out.

They aren't going to start improving FFXI just becausea PS3 version is out. They could've done that a long time ago on 360 or PC (both of which can play FFXI much cheaper than a PS3)

SE, quite honestly, doesn't care that much about significantly improving FFXI, technically speaking. They've made it very clear they'd rather just work on a new MMO. And it would be suicide for them to nix the PS2.

Well that's true and untrue lol I went to the Fan Festival that was held in Texas and when I spoke with one of the Japanese representatives he said that, (And this is slightly paraphrasing) "There are many things we would like to do to FFXI, but the PS2 limits us in doing them."

That's the only reason I wish they would push a transference to the PS3. I'd love to see things they would add as a result. I don't see it happining, but it would be nice. Just call it wishful thinking.

Yes, we know. SE has been repeating that crap for years. That doesn't mean they cannot improve FFXI's graphics and such on other platforms, they just don't want to. Again, they've said very clearly they'd rather just make a new MMO; and if they were going to force people to use another platform, they could've already done it, and been much cheaper than a PS3.

Well, not to interrupt the ongoing debate...but I thought I'd announce that all worked out for the best, and I just need to download the update and I'll be set. But that seems to be the next roadblock... I tried downloading it last night and it said it would take a little over 10 hours T.T and after maybe an hour and a half of downloading, it was at 1% still, then it just bsically stopped, saying something happened to the internet connection. It probably just timed out or something.
