Which software package do you have?

Most of the earlier ones had separate CDs for POL and FFXI.

You have to install the game first, then install the vista version of player..not the other way around. In other words, delete POL from your PC install FFXI then download the Vista Version of POL at playonline.com. If you have POL installed and not FFXI you cant install FFXI because it will think that FFXI is already installed. This happend to me too, untill I relized I had to download FFXI then the player lol.

Also, the main reason this happends is because the game already comes with POL so if you download POL you cant install FFXI because..the game disc has POL on it hense thats why it says you already have it.

Just an FYI, you don't HAVE to install FFXI first. It may be easier overall, but I found you can still do it seperately. For example (assuming you have 1 single DVD of a vana'diel collection):

Install POL client from POL site.
Put in Collection DVD; Open (cancel auto-run) and explore the dvd.
Open each folder and double click "setup.exe" (one for FFXI, RotZ, CoP, ToAU, WotG)

This will install each set of files individually, and you won't have to reinstall POL viewer.

I just happened to figure this out since I reinstalled FFXI on a Vista machine 3 days ago :)

When I installed FFXI onto the wife's Vista laptop, I downloaded the POL viewer first.

In this case it sounds like the pc is autorunning the install as soon as the disc is inserted. After you cancel out of it, you should be able to open or explore the cd or dvd and run the FFXI install instead of the POL install/

I installed this on my vista laptop no problem...here's a link (http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/download/media/vista01.html?pageID=media) that details the process. I followed them implicity and had no problems. You can't install FFXI off of the discs via autorun when installing on vista, you have to manually navigate the disc and select the installer itself...at least, I did.

my PC autoran the download process fine when I put it into my comp, I did not have to search for it. (also what I said about how to do it, I was just informing to anyone who reads this who has not downloaded POL yet, to install FFXI its easier and it saves time.) But if you already downloaded POL, and don't want to uninstall it you could do it that way.

My PC keeps bitching at me about privileges...

that is a very good description of an error message. I'm sure it will be very easy to tell exactly what is wrong.

It suddenly just started working. I have no clue why it was giving me shit about not enough privileges when I'm the god damn admin.
