ok I just thought it would be neet to see what everyone's first job on FFXI was, why, when you started it, how far you got on it etc...well sense I am new and I say MNK because its a fast way to level and make gil for wanting to become a whm later on xD.

My absolute very first job was Warrior. Knowing that I could freely switch to something else I took the advice I had read with people suggesting Warrior as a good starting job to get a feel of how combat works. I only took it to like level 3 before I tried out the other starting jobs.

As for my first real job, I would say Monk. I enjoyed Monk, being able to deal a nice amount of damage. I soloed a first and did a little duo with another mithra Monk for a while. It was quite fun. However I only took the job to level 13, and that's where it still sits today.

RDM, because it's been one of my favorite jobs since I got into the series (FF as a whole)

Boy was I disappointed @.@;

White mage. I always play games defensively, and WHM is probably the most defensive job in the game overall.

Warrior was the first one I chose, mainly because I wanted to get a feel for tanking.

Warrior was the first job I pciked up because I loved the idea of adventuring and exploring about as one, but RDM was the first job I picked up seriously because I loved the independence of it. And unlike Malacite I wasn't really disappointed with the job. :p

I started out as a MNK on my first character, because I liked the whole flavor of the job. Simple, direct, punch things til they fall down, and I read this post somewhere that hyped up the dedication it took to play the job really well, which I also liked.

I've started every character since (even mules) as MNK, as sort of a tradition.

And yet, I've never taken it past level 21. Other jobs seduced me, with all their fancy knick-knacks.

Red Mage. Actually a story behind it. I joined FFXI about a month after RoTZ was released, and NIN was a new job. My original plan was to solo as a RDM/NIN DD(using enspells) with shadows/cures as support. Way back when, this combo was unheard of and completely new. Therefor, I named myself "Neomage", the new mage.

Whatdya know, my trend caught on.

If you wanna get extremely technical, I started the game as a Warrior, only because it was merely a stepping stone to my true "First Job," Dragoon. I only initially took Warrior to 18 for the subjob quest, using Polearm mainly for the most part, because I knew from the get go that I was using this only as a sub to Dragoon anyway. It wasn't until later when my Dragoon was nearing the 40s that I went back and finished Warrior as a sub.

Rather amusing, seeing as how I never use the job as a sub to anything other than Paladin anymore.

I started as THF because I wanted to be Mithra, and I read that they did well with thf jobs. I took THF to 25 before I realized I wanted to be a Bard. So I leveled my White Mage to 30 and then unlocked Bard, and that was it!

Red Mage, because I couldn't decide between White Mage and Black Mage and I figured I'd get to do both.

Now ... WHM > RDM for me. :)

i had at first disregarded this game as crap when i heard it was online and you had to pay a monthly fee. but after reading the sales pitch on amazon for CoP, then the original game combined with RotZ, i came away with a completely wrong understanding of this game. so i bought it and started playing as a war. i soon found out that every thing the sales pitch led you to believe was true but not in the way they made it sound. anyway, after being lost and confused for 3 different characters, i was leveling to 10 then sending all my stuff and gil to my main character before deleting the mule and doing it again, i found someone who explained a few things about what i was missing. so i then lvled war on my main character to 18 and did the sub job quest. then once i started to lvl mnk for a sub for war i simply fell in love with the mnk. when i went back to war to lvl it to 37 i found i hated the job, but forced myself to do it anyway. so war was my first but mnk was my first true love. i know that was more then you asked for but i am a little wierd that way.;)

I started as THF over four years ago. I've always liked the sneaky and swift jobs in MMORPG's, like thieves and archers and whathaveyou. I got my thief to 32 before I switched to WHM, made a couple of new characters on a couple of different servers before settling on Caitsith and WHM'ing myself to 75. And that was my main until a couple of months ago when I got burned out.

My very first job was a warrior. I picked the hume with short black hair, because he looks exactly like my little brother O.o

... It's a stupid reason, I know, but it was cool at the time.

My first "in love" job would be THF, however. Sneak attacking is fun :D

My first job... wow....

Back in Beta I started as a RDM, because in previous FF games, RDM was always the "mage that could cure nuke and Melee" but only got to level 18 before the Beta ended and I had to wait that 2 month withdraw before release ;p

I started release with MNK, because I wanted to deal damage, but did not want to fool with spells at the time. Once I hit 42 MNK, I unlocked DRG and all the other jobs, then realized I had to level WAR (after getting DRG to 25 or so)
So I leveled WAR to 37 and went back to DRG (love this job)

Its been many years, but now this Mithra has all jobs at 37+, but BST and DRG at 75 ^.^

RDM because it is full of win and awesome. whatever class gives you the ability to:
1) equip a mage with a sword
2) beef up said sword with elemental properties
3) enfeeble a monster so its a shell of its former self
4) throw some cures around between nukes and enfeebles
5) obtain spells that makes it one of the best jobs to solo with (ok this last one is my opinion dont hate, appreciate)
6) did i forget to mention that the RDM is full of win and awesome?

now that i got BLU though, im startin to like it alot. and by alot i mean ill prolly never play another class for awhile. and for awhile i mean until im at least 75. its just that awesome.

i think im done for now. people at work are starting to think im wierd.

I started at THF because I've always liked the THF charaters in Final Fantasy. Sounds silly but Locke and Ziadane were really cool to me. I took THF to the 30s in beta and all the way to 75 in retail.

It was dead fun learning how FFXI THF works but now I'm woking on Summoner for a similar reason to the one above...plus Carbuncle is so darn cute!

RDM, basically because I knew nothing about the game and my brother told me that RDM was very versatile and needed in almost any group setting. To date it's been, and still is, the most rewarding class I've ever played in any MMO.

and because:

i dont know what your talking about. when im not in a party im out farming and i DO swing a sword, cast offensive magic, and heal myself. i dont know about you but im not just some healer with refresh. i tend to break the standard when i do things so i guess its just me but still.

i have started playing BLU and i will agree that the early levels are easier to solo than it was as rdm but i did all three things that you mentioned above very easily.

sorry i take offense when someone puts down a RDM. they will always be my favorite class because of thier ability to switch roles. plus thier AF gear looks pimpin

thats just my 2 cents, and im not tryin to start a fight or nething..... that makes me think...

who would win in a RDM vs. RDM fight. both the exact same stats, equipment, and magic.

hmmmmmmmm....... somethin to ponder till i get off of work.

I started out as a Warrior. I got about level 27 when I decided I needed a better way to make money, and one of the best ways to make steady no-overhead money is from teleports so I started White Mage.

I never looked back. Today I have all the mage-type jobs to at least 37 (except SCH but I'm working on that now) and three of them at 65 or higher. The only melee jobs I have levelled to 37 are NIN and DRK because I need them for subs, and my original choice, WAR, is still down at 33 after almost 4 years.

To me, this is a fun story.

The first time I ever heard of FFXI was shortly after it's release from my best friend and his girlfriend, they picked up the game about 6 days before her birthday and came up with a really neat idea to have a LAN party with FFXI as the game of choice. I was all sort of excited for it, I just upgraded my computer in 2002 to run Morrowind better and wanted to test it on an online game  so that weekend I hauled my computer on over after getting my brand new elvann warrior to level 10 so I could party with everyone and found out that the party limit was 6 people, which was just jazzy because we had 6 people for the lan party ^^

I've been the meat-shield in every game I've played and it diddnt change in FFXI the first time I picked it up, provoke was an absolute godsend in my mind because every game I've played up to that point hasnt had anything even close to provoke. We decimated tahrongi canyon for a few hours then moved onto the maze with our newb squad.

It was fantastic!! The party setup was Keadjo-rdm, Amokie-thf, Sheirineri-rdm, Nyahoo-whm, Spookypants-mnk, and Jaice-war. Nothing says lovin like shouting out a skill chain running around 5 people in the room with the rdm's nuking at the end ^o^

After that weekend we tried to play those jobs with eachother but I got left in the dirt not even knowing about subjobs until some one told me to run to Valkrum... the scarriest thing I've ever done.... that was my first week or so. I played warrior up to 40 with a thf subjob in a random static party that asked me to be their tank while they level up subs then unlock new jobs, after that I was with them until my drg hit 51 ^^ mucho mucho fun, I miss having the time for a static party and the people that made it up, but that's what skool does ter yahs time.

And now I've started all over, same name on a Mithra and I'm trying out mages and having a blast ^^

I first started on Warrior, intending to play Dragoon to 75. I kept hopping about jobs though, and someone told me I'd never get a job above 50. Eventually I got my DRG to 66, but my interest went to Summoner (<3) and I got that to 75 after my WHM sub was up.

Don't get me wrong, I love playing rdm, it's just that in a standard party dynamic, it really changes in the middle levels. Originally, coming for Star wars galaxies where everything is solo I figured that I wanted to solo the game and RDM would be best for that. However, as I got into the party dynamic over soloing things I just found that blu was more fun.

However, I take my red mage into campaign and it's awesome. But I like 'mage-hitting' stuff alot more as blu.

My story's got some similarity to Neomage's, in that I came with the intent of playing a weird job/sub combo -- paladin/red mage. As such, red mage was my first job. When I got to the Dunes, though, I was amazed to discover that status ailment spells work in this game! I knew I'd love the trip to 37.

Early on in my career, some random person gave away a Refresh scroll to me; thus, I figured I might as well get to 41 so I could use it. People warned me repeatedly about how much Refresh changes things and that I might not like post-sub RDM because of this... but I did. :) It wound up being my first to 75.

Oh, and the PLD/RDM plan? I did eventually follow through with that in a static duo with a DRK that turned into a static trio with a BLU. I'm PLD51 now and feel I'm doing a decent job with this challenge. I couldn't have done it, however, if the first person to chew me out horribly for suggesting such a weird idea didn't turn around and end up laying the groundwork for my own journey. Thanks, Armando. :) -- Pteryx

When i first started playing my first job was Red Mage, i was one of those unlucky players who started without help or linkshell. So at lvl 30 I found out "Hey, i need a subjob" so i did the subjob quest solo at lvl 30RDM, and just slapped WHM as my subjob and continued on as 31RDM/1WHM lol... After being confused as to why people were calling me gimp instead of offering advice i finally stumbled upon someone who offered advice and explained the basic Job/Subjob thing to me and gave me a Social Linkpearl. It wasn't long until I unlocked Summoner and got to lvl 30 with /rdm subjob. I started to become bored leveling a Mage and met a 75DRK one day. He was completely decked out in full AF2 and it was just amazing. So i started leveling Dark Knight (After the obnoxious quest), but being from Sandoria and being around a bunch of Knights got me in the mood to be one of those "White Knights" so in the end Paladin made its way to 75.

So the first real job that i really cared about and loved was Paladin, and it always will be, even though now im a Minstrel, a Pirate, a Loner(Beastmaster), and an Assassin (Thief).

Mostly a Minstrel.. /sigh, but i will never forget the Knight inside me.

The following post is going to be the story of my recent rejoining the game after a several years hiatus.

Quite some time ago, when the servers were young and the skies were bright, my 30 Elvaan warrior was getting his Samurai job. I had reached 33 on my own, and had planned on trying to solo the quest. I got to Konschstat Highlands (for the bomb iron portion of the quest) and started the bomb fight. It totally flattened me. As I lay contemplating my failure and discovering the surprisingly nutty texture of the cavern peat, a friendly lvl 40 white mage popped by and resurrected me unsolicited. I was quite pleased. She asked in a cutely curt manner "(Samurai) (Job) (Quest) (Do you need it?)" And I answered a very shy and unapologetic "(Yes, please.)" It turned out, she spoke a bit of english, and she had a friend coming. Little did I know just how kickass this friend would be. He was an enormous, lvl 75 Galka MNK/NIN. He was rolling full Rasetsu +1 and a Panther Mask, and just looked mean. I'm not gonna say his gear was especially impressive, other than that it looked awesome and seemed perfectly suited for this kind of event. He rocked the bomb before he could even get enough TP to WS with.

Oddly enough, they hadn't already done the portion in The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah, and so I was summarily invited along. We go, and the WHM goes and kicks the tree with a hatchet, and Boom! Big ole' treant. I panic, and run back a bit. Then, the MNK Chi Blasts the bugger, and I see a quarter of it's HP drop. He gets into combat with it, and they start tumblin'. A few seconds into the fight, I see something that forever changed my perceptions of the MNK job. Asuran Fists. Eight rapid punches of just generally pissed off death. The tree was destroyed. I was amazed, as starry-eyed newbs often are. I then vowed that if I ever made another character, that a Galka MNK would be what it was. Eventually, I went on to be fairly successful at Sam, being one of the few people on my server to really successfully use SAM/RNG to any degree.

So, when I left the game a few months later, I had all but forgotten about MNK. That set me up for my return a few years later. It didn't take much convincing for me that galka MNK was still amazing. I rolled with it, and have always had a glorious time. I still love my galka mnk. He's fun as hell. I just wish I had those damn Kote ><;

RDM. I never questioned the fact that I would like RDM. It has always been my favorite FF job and I enjoy it in FFXI as well. In addition to being fun it has the added bonus of being a very versatile and enjoyable solo and party job. I have never been disappointed with any of its aspects. I actively pursue all options for RDM and intend to get gear appropriate to those aspects.

Well i've just hit a month on FFXI (woo) and i started on black mage.

In every game i enjoy being a caster, blowing the funk out of things from a distance. But when i hit level 5 BLM i realised i didnt enjoy it so i used a RDM untill level 18 and got my sub job with the help of random people who i now have as friends... although i havent spoken to them for a while....

Anyway. When i got my subjob i decided to get back into BLM and i loved untill i got it to 19 (WHM sub). For some reason i don't enjoy being a caster on FFXI which is odd for me.

Now i'm leveling up THF/WAR and so far i'm enjoying it. Got 10 THF today and going to try and get 10 WAR today also.

My first job was WHM. I got it to Lv6 and was bored out of my mind. So I leveled THF. And loved it. I've been playing forebar, and I'mma 69 Thief. Its neat. At the time I wanted to help others in the game, so I was all, WHM. Neat. But THF...You get to stab things from behind! How could you not love it?

WHM- For people who like helping others
RDM- For people who can multitask
BLM- For people who like blowing things up
MNK- For people who like Punching stuff
THF- For people who like stealing and running away
WAR- For people who like stabbing things.

I started on RDM thinking the same. I mean I love magic, but it´s been hard after I turned into a "refresher" but I decided to go for it, I want to finish what I started

Next one? I´ll think I´ll go for BLM or Blu, I still like the magic, but I love it when I can cause damage. :wasted:

RDM is bad-ass specifically because it really is so good at so many things. It's a nearly never-ending pool of MP that can be put to a variety of uses, and it even has a few nifty weapons at its disposal when the circumstances are right.

Blue Mages may have better sword skills and more interesting spells, but the job isn't nearly as much of a complete package the way RDM is, IMO.

Umm.... Thief. I wanted money. ._.

THF/MNK to Lv.30-something. Invite rate went from bad to horrible. Leveled WAR, figured Berserk would do great damage. After two or three parties, invites evaporated again.

Unlocked NIN with lots and lots of help from people. x_x Leveled it far enough--as fun as it was, couldn't wait to get back to THF--but spent two months farming for gil to buy better gear anyway since NIN drained my funds. (I sucked at farming.)

Finally back on THF, with lot's of upgraded gear, and even gears for coming levels. Spent hours revamping macros. Proudly put up search comments: Can go either /WAR or /NIN!

No invites.

Four nights. Five. Six in a row?!?

That broke me.

* * *

Tried lots of jobs, liked everything I tried, but kept bouncing between them anyway. Eventually, RDM75, and now PLD75 as well.

I still want money. (And, I still suck at farming. >_< )

I still see SATA Viper Bite in my dreams, every so often.
