So, I've got no music setup for PoL, and the music in game is also turned off so I can fire up Itunes with whatever I like in the background. However, I have the sound turned way up so I can fish in game over whatever's on Itunes. What this means is that while PoL itself is nice and silent, and it's quiet once I get in game, I have the damn WoTG loading screen music jacked up to speaker-blowing levels. Anyone know how to turn the loading screen musical accompaniments off? I'm starting to dread clicking the "Play" button from PoL's FFXI screen now. That march does not come in quiet.

PlayOnline folder -> Find music files -> rename "Music 01" to "BACKUP Music01" -> etc. You has a brains, go from here.

The specific files you are looking for are (for the US version):

.\sound\win\music\data\music108.bgw
.\sound3\win\music\data\music242.bgw
.\sound4\win\music\data\music179.bgw
.\sound5\win\music\data\music140.bgw

Technically you don't need to change the first one if you have CoP installed, but I'd just as soon not take any chance (I do feel your pain when it comes to the opening songs).

You can rename each of these files to something else and/or replace them with an empty file (create a new text file, and just change the extension). I do replace them with an empty file just so updates don't re-download the song. There's also a release out right now called "Quiet Marches", an associate for "Quiet <call>s", which are the song files with a lower volume. I won't give the link, but I'm sure a quick google will find it easy enough.

If you'd want to, you can also open FFXIConfig through the Windows Start menu.
Start > All Programs > Playonline > Final Fantasy XI > Final Fantasy XI Config.

In the sound tab of FFXIConfig you can uncheck the box saying "Enable sound."
Doing this will disable all in game sound from the moment you press the Play button in the PlayOnline Viewer. This will also help your game's overall performance a bit. I've had this done since over two years, due to the fact I also like to listen to music while playing, and with sound enabled loud, and even having all FFXI Music turned down as far as it goes through the in-game volume bars, you could still hear the game music a little bit if your volume is really loud.. and I like to listen to music really loud sometimes. ^^;

By the way, disabling FFXI sound will also help you get rid of the loud <call> noises which can't be muted by the in-game volume bars.

The only thing I haven't really got rid off yet is the PlayOnline Viewer music of the starting Login screen. ><

Kittyneko, wouldn't that disable sound effects as well? Kitalrez needs the sound effects to fish.
