Reinstallation Taking an Ungodly Amount of TIme T.T

I think I'm going to kill something.

I've been trying to start playing FFXI on the PS2. I was using my brother's game from when he bought it with the HDD when it first came out back in 2003. I got my POL stuff all updated, bought a new Content ID, and was all set to go. So, when I went to start the game, it began updating. Turns out about 5 years worth of updates takes a very, VERY long time to download. I was at about 50% through Process 2 after 36 hours.

So, I decided to stop the updates and go out to get the 2008 Vana'diel Collection- this way I would have the expansions, and surely it wouldn't take so long to update. Everything seemed to be going ok, until the installation process started. It's been saying there are 56 minutes left for about 3 hours now.

Is this common, or should I be thinking that there's something wrong with my PS2?

Staying at the same time isn't a good sign, but FFXI has always taken a helluva long time to update. Is it showing the same file downloading/checking, or is it moving through them?

It might be your internet connection that's causing it to go so slow. That or your harddrive might be corrupted.

When I was running the update, it was moving through the files...just incredibly slowly. There were near 10,000 files to download, and it went through 1 about every minute/minute and a half.

Now, I've stopped the update and am trying to reinstall the game. It seems to be going slower. The troubling thing is that by stopping the update, I lost about 36 hours worth of progress thinking that re-installation would be faster. That doesn't seem to be the case...~.~...

EDIT: Problem solved. After several attempts, calling POL support, checking the HDD, etc, I came to the conclusion that the PS2 was just too old to process the installation. I went out and got a newer PS2, reformatted the HDD, and now I'm well on my way to playing. Thank you all for your input!
