View Full Version : Staves
I've been wondering, I have both light and dark staves at lvl 51 SMN, which should I buy next?
Also, my staff skill is at level 120 and I can't find anywhere decent to level that either, any suggestions?

Which summons do you currently have? You'll want a staff for each avatar eventually, but if you only have a few summons, get the staves for those elements first.
I have them all except Fenrir and Diabolos, which is why I wanted to ask which one to buy next or is there no specific pattern I should follow?

In that case, I would choose the staff of the avatar you use the most in exp parties, but you probably already know that. That's the best advice I can give since I'm not a summoner. x.x

There's no specific pattern (except having dark first and light second but you have that). I'd recommend the Earth Staff next because it has Physical Damage minus 20% which is nice. I wish I remembered where to level that staff. I remember when my staff was at 50-60 and I got it up high in the Crawler's Next where the Helm Beetles are located then I went to the Boyahda Tree. I'm getting rusty on FFXI knowledge. =(

There's no particular order to get them in, but from Lv50 I have been using Double Slap a lot, and will do until I get Eclipse Bite at 65, so maybe Ice Staff? They're dirt cheap these days.
You should be aiming to get them all eventually.
I see, thinking about it Feenicks I use shiva a lot so I think I'll go for Ice staff next too.
If anyone knows about a good place to lvl staff at my level that'd be awesome, but otherwise thanks for the help guys!

Have you tried Beastmen-held Campaign Forts? I think they typically cap at about 150~ ? (Haven't actually tried myself.)
It's a decent head-start at least and one which you can obtain overnight whilst you sleep. Hell, throw a bazaar up while you're there. Just out of interest, what would SMN's stave skill cap be at Lvl51?

Smn's cap at 151@ level 51 with staves

Well auto-skilling on Forts should work out nicely then. Assuming - that is - that the approx 150 cap I gave for the Forts themselves is accurate (and, damn my haggard brain, I wouldn't wager too much money on that).
Auto-skilling's kinda lame obviously. But hell, sometimes lame works out brilliantly.

Depending on what avatar you use most, I suggest you get the elemental staff for it. If you don't have a staff for an avatar and you use an auto-equip macro, put in a staff that doesn't go against the avatar's element so it doesn't cost more to keep out (i.e. If you don't have an earth staff, macro something else in so you don't have a wind staff out when you're summoning Titan). I usually use the AF staff for that.
If you want to level your staff skill, on the other hand, I'd recommend the thunder staff. It gives mostly DEX, which translates into accuracy. If for some reason you're tanking though, go for the earth staff.
Just my 2 gil.

Just got home and was curious to see what skill Forts actually allow you to get to.
Lo and behold, I suck. Apologies for suggesting it might be around the 150 mark. It's nowhere near that. A lowly 50 is the actual amount.

That said, the crabs in SSG are around level43-47ish, beetles in West Desert are around 47-51ish. They're probably a decent start.

I have to make a correction. I just remembered. I was at the Helm Beetles at 136 skill and left at 196 skill to the Boyahda Tree.

If I had a lvl 51 summoner I wouldnt worry about staff skill at all until way later on. No party your going to be in to lvl 75 will care and lvling up @ lvl 75 is so much easier for summoner anyway. Also I would get all the staves, if not rich just get all the NQ ones. Macro them in with your summoning macros.
/ma "Carbuncle" <me>
/equip main "Light Staff"
/equip hands "Carbuncle Mitts"
/p Carbuncle W00t!

Wow, I am just a fountain of misinformation.. x_x
I wonder if the skillcap for each zone's Fort changes? Or perhaps even changes according to its current strength..
(Got that info from the ffxiclopedia by the way. I'll go slap a big 'NU-UH!' on that value when I get home from work.)
EDIT: In a controversial twist, it would appear that the ffxiclopedia was correct in stating that Fortifications cap at around level 50.
That is... caps at around JOB level 50, not weapon. The article is poorly worded. -_-;
Anyway, from asking around, a cap of weapon skill 150ish is thankfully accurate. I've actually been given a very reliable testimony from one player that her stave skill reached 155 in Eldieme Necropolis overnight.

Eldieme Necropolis eh? Might give that a go and if that doesn't work I'll try out the Boyada Tree or wherever. Heard some very useful info guys, thanks!
