Ok I have just installed FFXI and all its expansions on my new laptop I've also updated it, now I bought this logitech usb controller I know where to go to set it up but I cant seem to figure out what the default settings for each control are for the PS2, when I just clicked on the default B setting it has I couldnt move my mouse in PoL with the joystick :/ I'm so confused! can you help me out? i'm willing to use Vent if anyone wants to help me that way send me a PM! (My ls has a vent server we can use)

Problem two, I installed windower latest, I had to create a new directory for this in program files since for some reason it didnt do it, but once I downloaded it I have no clue how to install it, can anyone help me? I"m new to windower but not FFXI.

If anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it asap! thank you so much!

Lets just start off and say that the FFXI software comes with a windower of its own that I recommend using against any other outside software.

The compact keyboard settings are best for laptops, as they incorporate the WSAD movement and Up, Down, Left, Right Camera. Allowing customizations and custom keybindings. Just tinker with the keyboard and the pad and see which you like best.

It sounded like from your initial description that you set up your gamepad under FFXI config but not POL config; POL has its own independent controller settings.

Also, keep in mind for a number of gamepads you need to enable some of the checkboxes in the controller config for FFXI. One axis on the right analog stick is usually mapped to a "Slider" control named Rz, so you need to Enable Sliders to get it. The D-Pad directions are mapped to what the FFXI controller config refers to as "Hat Switches" so you will need to enable those as well.

Finally, the third-party "Windower" tool doesn't install on the system, it's just supplied as an executable from what I understand. If you are to use this, you will need to pay attention to where you download it, and go there to run it.

I won't weigh in on the debate over whether or not to use this program, but my impression of the developers is that they are about as legitimate as the developers for this kind of tool can be, aside from the scandals surrounding Taj (who announced stepping down, but is still putting out plugins). All in all, I find the site for this tool to be a good reference point for technical issues surrounding FFXI regardless of whether or not you actually use the tool.

Also, don't recall if it was mentioned here or elsewhere, but the issue of momentarily not being able to control your character for several seconds after switching back is a known issue in SE's Windowed mode since they first implemented it. I'm not sure whether or not the use of USB devices has any bearing on this.
