So, after taking a break to level a few melee jobs to sub level for fun/the future i am almost ready to fight Maat on bard to break the LV70 cap. I've read a number of walkthroughs and watched a few video, but i figured i would make a post first for any final suggestions or comments on my plan.

First, I'll start off with gear and macros. I plan to make a new macro set with all the songs i plan on using without staff swaps, as well as macros for medicines and whatnot. I also figured i should have a few macros to swap armor between melee and and CHR for applying requiem and elegy. There won't be too much difference between the sets though. I have all the appropriate hq instruments except for Paeon, but i plan to buy that just for the fight. Here are the gear sets i plan on using. Please forgive my spelling as i am doing this from memory at work.

Melee Gear
Main: Company Fleuret
Off: None (might buy a cheap All Job shield)
Head: Empress Hairpin
Neck: Spike Necklace
Ear1: Melody Earring
Ear2: Melody Earring
Body: Scorpion Harness (borrowing from a friend)
Hands: Battle Gloves
Ring1: Courage Ring
Ring2: Courage Ring
Back: Nomad's Mantle
Legs: AF pants
Waist: Gleeman's Belt
Feet: Savage Gaiters

Debuff Gear
Main: Company Fleuret
Off: None (might buy a cheap All Job shield if i can find one)
Head: Noble's Ribbon
Neck: Flower Necklace
Ear1: Melody Earring
Ear2: Melody Earring
Body: Justaucorps
Hands: AF gloves
Ring1: Moon Ring
Ring2: Moon Ring
Back: Jester's Cape +1
Legs: AF pants
Waist: Gleeman's Belt
Feet: Savage Gaiters

Much of the melee gear is just stuff i still have from leveling war and ninja to 40, but i figure the little bit of extra str/dex/eva will help me more than keeping charisma items in slots when i am not singing debuffs.

I've seen guides that suggest both Paeon and Minne as the main defensive buffs, and I plan on using the Soul Voice + Paeon V + Paeon IV plan. I have a timer i am going to use so i know when Soul Voice is about to run out and my Paeons need to be resung.

I have a Hi-Potion tank i will empty the day before i am ready to fight Maat. I also have a Hi-potion +3 from an assault. I plan to buy an Icarus Wing, sleeping potions, and use a Reraise Scroll, but i wasn't planning on getting any other medicines unless it is highly recommended.

My sword skill is capped. Evasion skill is 180. Parry is at 90. I plan on sleeping to 100 TP, then using an icarus wing to get to 200 TP, use soul voice, play my buff songs, and then engage with Elegy or Finale depending on what Maat buffs himself with. I will melee until 300 TP and top off HP with hi-potions and then use Spirits Within. After that i expect to use hi-potions as needed and just use Fast Blade at 100 TP since i think getting to 300 TP + full hp again for another Spirits Within will be too much.

That is pretty much it. I intend to go 1/1, but i imagine most people do. Any comments or suggests are welcome.

I think you are going to win, hey and extra hp regen drink and a Vile elixer wouldnt hurt either.

oh yeah. i forgot to mention selbina milk. i will have a stack of that to protect my paeon buffs from finale and will reuse another milk as soon as one is dispelled.

Eat Def Food, have selbina drinks ready and if you don't have one pick up an Ebony Harp +1 for the +2 to Paeon.

I wouldn't use a VE for this fight.. You're not gonna have access to a subjob which means no MP, so sticking with Selb Milk and hi-pots is the way to go.

I've personally never done this fight nor researched it (my limbreak was on WHM), but it looks like you've got a good plan going. I'd also recommend having a max-skill Lullaby macro ready to go in case you need a break to get HP up, recast buff songs, etc..

The only thing he's missing that can really swing this fight in his favor is Joyeuse, but even without that it's still a stupidly easy fight.

If you have any MP at all (from gears and I would say merits but I take it this is your 1st job to 75) I would suggest a rune sword since the latent powers it up quite nicely as long as you have the MP to burn. I doubt you'll need the potions but you should bring them anyway.

Like any DD Maat fight, go in, sleep to 100 TP, pop a blink band and then let him have it with Soul Voice and double Elegy followed by your own Double Peons which should have you recovering near 30 HP a tic. Make sure to watch what buffs he casts too. If he uses something stupid like a carol, do not finale him.

i went 1/1 last night. i never really felt my life was in danger, but i used 4 hi-potions throughout the fight just to be safe. it took a little over 6 minutes total.

I assume if I did this with the artifact set and the food, I can expect death, right? :S

The thing is I don't really have a melee skill, because I uh... am a bard and didn't expect melee to be something I needed to do while exping, so my dagger is stuck at 96.

I'm in trouble aren't I?

Nah. I was able to beat Maat on Bard with mostly AF, and a dagger. The best WS I had was Cyclone (which I used 3 times). Getting the skill up won't take much work... a skillup party or two should do it fairly well.

Also, when I said mostly AF: I did have the carapace gear (3 piece, Latent Effect: double Def). I think really a good key for someone who doesn't have much to work with is to try to bring as many hi-pots as possible and remember that SV + Elegy/Requiem = <3.

So in reality I only need about 125+ dagger skill?

Which items should I bring in? Just load up on poitons?

Let's see if I can remember what I did (it was some time ago)...

Found it, from a post I did back when I completed it:

Equipment:
Cermet Knife+1
Elegant Shield
Carapace helm/breastplate/gauntlets
Spike Necklace
Melody Earring x2
Florite Ring
Balance Ring
Jesters Cape +1
Gleeman's Belt
Choral Cannions/Slippers

I also brought 14 Hi-potions +2 (they cost the same as regular Hi-potions), a stack of selbina milk, a Horn +1 and a Siren Flute (didn't have a Paeon Harp).

I couldn't afford an opo-opo necklace, so I went in, used the milk, 2hr Paeon x2 (which, I should have done closer to him... I did it back near the entrence). Found Maat, pulled with Elegy. As I had tried Maat on WHM as well, elegy made a BIG difference, though he was still hitting me for 90-150 per hit. Landed Requiem 6 on him.

Started meleeing him, when I hit 100%, I used Cyclone > Icarus Wing > Cyclone (only 200 damage total, but every bit helped). From there, it was all just Melee, using Hi-pots when my health got low enough to use them.

He ended up doing One-Inch punch 2 times: the first time was for 250ish, the second time he missed me completly.

All said and done, I had no Hi-pots left over (I think I used a couple too early when I hit the wrong macro at the beginning of the fight >.<), and 9 milks.

At the time, I probably had about 130 dagger skill or so, and I had as many potions as my inventory could handle. When you go in, be very sure you keep track of how long SV is and will be up, and refresh your Paeons and maybe Elegy before SV drops so you can maximize the potential there and save on your potions. Also, I think I did this at 66... but I can't remember, to be honest.

A friend in my LS told me I don't have to actually beat maat, just outlast him.

IS that true?

As far as I know, it's impossible to get Maat down to 0% and he dies. Generally speaking, he will give up at about 20-25%. The only exceptions to this that I know of and can remember are WHM and THF -- for WHM, there's a strategy of healing yourself until he gives up, and THF there is a strategy of stealing the Warp scroll from him (and, of course, you can do the melee to 20-25% if you really want to on these jobs).

On Bard, though, the only way to get past LB5 is to melee him.

From Maat page on Wiki:

You have 10 minutes to beat Maat.

However:

Maat does not always need to be taken to zero HP to win. Sometimes he will concede you the win before being defeated, and some jobs may also be able to win by fulfilling a special condition.

I took Maat all the way down to 0% HP when I defeated him on PLD.

Well, that's the first time I heard about it happening... but, I also really have only looked at 2 of the Maat fights (BRD and WHM), and those aren't exactly speedy fights... good to know for the future though.

It depends. He almost always gives up, but sometimes if you use a weapon skill to finish him off you can get him down to 0%. I've never seen or heard of someone who actually had to fight him to 0, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens.

On the subject of skill ups, how high do I need to get it? Can I really get by with dagger 130?

Hi guys, here was my winning bard fight strategy:

Main weapon: Monster Signa for Soul Voice and Paeon Five and Three (AH didn't have Paeon Four)
Rune Blade for attacking
Head: Blink Band (Although I forgot to use it ><)
Body: Scorpion Harness Borrowed from a friend, I'd say it's a must have for this fight, see bellow
Back: White Cape +1
Hands: Devotee's Mitts
Ring: Moon ring X2
Legs; Choral Cannions (BRD AF LEGS)
Feet: Coral Slippers (BRD AF FEET)
Ear: Melody Earring X2
Flute: Traversiere +1

As you can see my equipment is very meger at most.

Preperation:

Cap your sword skill in skill up party. Dagger is pretty much useless here and I lost two maat fights in part of it.

Strategy:

Soul Voice lasts for 3 minutes, as do the Army Paeons. Cast soul voice, then do the double paeon, then equip your sword.

Scorpion Harness is a good friend here because you will be using Army Paeon instead of accuracy and attack.

Stock up on potions. I had an inventory full and used every last one.

Use Carnage Elegy and Foe Requium on him.

If your spells go off don't bother re-singing them, it wastes a lot of time and believe me maat won't stop hitting just for you to sing.

I used a potion whenever my HP got into the yellow. I only had about 950 HP for this fight.

I also used an icarus wing. I didn't use opo opo as it seemed like a rip off.

Result:
Prons is now the record holder on the Shiva Server.

See you guys at 75!
