View Full Version : Beastmaster Charm Potency

I'm another player that quit the game and am coming back, again. I'm still working on BST and a friend of mine on the Gilgamesh server, Insanegenis (who I think has quit for a while himself), gave me links to lots of resources on how to play Beastmaster, including the BST Bible on these forums.

He also gave me a link (that I can no longer find) that listed different status effects that affect charm ability. I remember reading things like Signet, Reraise, Blink, Stoneskin and Sneak adding to the charm chance. Certain actions also added or took away from the effectiveness of charm i.e. running away from a mob would reduce the potency of charm on the pursuing mob. It even had a point system that gave these actions and effects positive and negative ratings.

The point of this post is: I've lost the link to it, does anyone else have it or has at least seen the site so I can say I'm not just making this up?

Charm is VERY random. VERY VERY random.

I was in +50 CHR and outside it was raining, and the sun was facing 87 degrees south west east. It was also 9:30pm at the time and there was a car crash on one of the busy streets in London. I mischarmed a beetle in West Ronfaure (I'm Level 75) :wtf:

So what I'm basically saying is, use light staff/HQ light staff, a decent amount of "basic" CHR+ gear and some Charm+ (duration) if you want, and just go for it. :)

There's no "deciding" factor. :P

Or the game just likes you mess you up in different ways, especially when certain buffs are down.

EDIT: There are many many theories. But at the end of the day you'll charm/mischarm, and I am willing to bet a number of BSTs here will not take that link (should we find it) and put it to heart and "rely" on it. xD

I've not heard of such research/website, it'll be an interesting read. I'm not saying you're making this up, but I will not "make sure my sneak is up" when I'm about to charm. You know. ;)

Yeah, I gotcha. Main thing I wish is that I could find this sight again. Looks like alot of the old websites I used to use are now down, and may never come back up. I would like to review that site since it's been so long, but mainly I'd like other BST's to quit ragging on me for mentioning that I even saw the site.

I understand. I'm not ragging at you at all, but if it was a long time ago then the theories, at the time, might've been somewhat useful/correct. Not sure how long you've quit for.

If I can, sum up that guide, best way to put it is:

The more you need charm to land in a desperate situation, the more chance you will not be able to charm. This graph that I made in 2 minutes should cover all your needs:

OMG!
That was the other thing I totally forgot about that the guide listed: experience points into the level.

But, to be clear, I do get the gist of charming and also the ironic situations that occur when attempting to charm a potential pet. Like your graph says, the more you need it, the less you're likely to get it.

In that case, to refresh you, the closer you are to level, the harder the game will try to kill you. And also make sure your Reraise is dispelled or wears off.

Many many many more factors of course. I'm sure many people here would be willing to share their horror stories and "potential" factors.

Maybe we can rebuild the list!

This thread reminded me about this picture posted on my LS's forums a while back.

I don't know how real it is, but I don't doubt the legitimacy... ;) I don't know where it came from, sorry..

OP: I can't say as I've ever seen anything listing all those variables, so I can't help out on that front.

On another note:

I never did get to lvl my Scythe while I was lvl'ing BST, so at Nov/Dec of last year I took myself up to the Steelshells in tBT and spent a few days getting the skill required to start Spiral Hell (and the points to unlock the trial scythe). No lie, I NEVER mischarmed on Darksday....but always had the highest mischarm rate on Lightsday.

Damn Apollo's staff is lieing to me :vent:

Well, maybe this could just be a junk thread for horrible charm stories, then?
That sounds alot more fun to me, lol.

...the closer you are to level, the harder the game will try to kill you.

Personally, I've noticed that every time I break the 2k boundary into a level, the game kills me. I level down and repeat this procedure twice. Once I'm within 2k-3k of my next level, I'll mischarm, link, and mischarm again. It always leads to my death unless I use a warp scroll. There is never enough time for me to activate a RR item. >.> I come back for more, get a bit over where I was the last time, and mischarm again. Vicious cycle. This started at level 59. Stayed alive till 60. That's a lot of lost exp. Dinged 61 last night. Broke the curse. ....but then again, there wasn't anything around for me to aggro, link, and mischarm the hell out of.;)

That chart is great. soo trueeeee..... Closer you are to level up the less chance of charm succeeding. :P

Same goes for me, usually fireday are as bad as lightday.

To the op, chr gear and light staff/apollo +Food should be the only things that effect charm potency. But sometimes it just feels that the game whant you to fail.... 4 misscharms in a row during pet swaps.

Last night I soloed my first Ophiuchus Subligar. To fight fomors I charmed an IT Oil Slick. Charmed on the first try.

Afterwards, I decided to farm a Fomor Codex. I mischarmed ~8 times on a Gloop while fighting it. When I had to leave and charm it again, I mischarmed 5 times. Fun times, fun times...

Just going along with crazy BST randomness, I joined some friends to do a Titan Prime run. Everyone died except, guess who... Did we win? Hell, no. :wasted:

Beast Escape Maneuver is around the 8:50 mark.
