Short version - either or both of updates KB905866 and KB946041 broke FFXI. The latter required a restart. FFXI worked normally on uninstall of these updates.
Just an FYI - I have a Windows Vista laptop, it did an auto-update today, a variety of security updates for specific unrelated programs and a couple general Windows Upgrades. POL worked fine, but upon starting FFXI, the frame rate was literally non-existent. The initial graphic of the load screens, like the EULA agreement and such would load, but it would freeze. The music would continue, and if I moved my mouse or hit my arrows I could hear the buttons making noise. Through memory of what keys to mash I was able to log in, again with the initial graphic of each screen loading and then freezing. My character logged in MH, and I could tell by the music that is where I was, but on login I was staring at a black screen. I could hear myself access menus with keyboard and mouse, and hear myself walk around, but the screen was completely black.
I logged out and uninstalled the two general updates, and now FFXI works fine again. Did anyone else have this problem? Is it something I need to report to SE, and through what channel? Thanks.
