View Full Version : Rant - This happens every time there's an update...

This is the first time I've written something like this, but I feel the need to get it off my chest. Is it just me or do people quite simply lose their minds whenever update time rolls around?

It's not just the whole "Oh snap, this job is better than that job" crap. I mean people seem to get tense. They tend to want to lash out at everyone at every little comment. Drama rears its head from around every corner, and the atmosphere is generally dismal and annoying. I have little patience as it is, and it gets eroded very quickly these days. The last thing I want is for my patience to be lost over someone's comment in an internet forum. It's frustrating. I can't have a reasonable conversation with other people because they go kookoo for Coco Puffs over their job getting screwed out of God Mode in another update.

"Don't say that about my job! You don't know what you're talking about unless you go level it!"

"Har har! you're only lvl 30. stfu till you get to 75."

"lol[insertjobhere]"

"Oh noes! Your job is better than my job now! Must bash my head against PC/PS2 until it becomes smooshed and bloody against the screen!"

"I'm new to the forums. F*** you and F*** you again."

All this stuff feels like it's boring itself into my brain, ripping out nerve endings and dumping out the files of the useful information I try to hold on to. Things about Macross, old school Kung Fu movies, and my quest for the perfect homemade curry sauce.

And....and..... I guess I don't have anything else. I just wanted to bitch and moan. And doing it anonymously over the internets prevents you from getting strangled if you disagree with me. I mean, seriously, does anyone else feel this way? It's like a full moon comes out whenever there's an update and everyone grows hairy arms and legs and an evil goatee. I have to weed through posts like I'm searching for Waldo at a barber's pole convention if I want to find anything decent to read. I'm not talking about DiV specifically. It's surprising mild here though not completely empty of these things I speak of. the problem is everywhere.

Maybe I should go play Monopoly for a while.

I'm done I guess.

Humans dislike change. It's only natural.

There's always an issue of inequalty between job classes in MMOs. Big update times always mix it up.

When updates happen:

Some jobs are happy,
Some people in updated jobs fear it becoming a "bandwagon" job. An unfounded fear if you're a healer, nuker or support class.
Some fear the updates make a once lolJob "overpowered,"
Some jobs complain about not getting updated, even though the update notes didn't promise them an update.
A formerly questionable situational piece of gear or weapon become THE piece of gear or weapon for a certain job.

Now, let's review:

SCH got super-buffed. /Dance4s ensue.
People are worried about a SCH Bandwagon (lol).
People are concerned about SCH now being "overpowered."
RDMs are bitching about being "screwed over" in the update, even though no updates were promised to them this time around.
Hagun is now the GK of choice for all Samurai (until Amano), nulling any previous arguements against it.

Meh. People get excited over percieved nerfs and buffs and changes and rearranges. They have to adapt their plans. Some folks get excited when this happens, some folks get upset.

Me, I get apathetic.

Also:

Kung Fu movies are amazing. Enter the Dragon. Fist of Fury. The Big Boss. And that's just Bruce Lee.

<3

Anyhow, yes. Smile on your brother, everybody get together try and love one another.

Ya know what I'm sayin'?

Ya digg what I'm postin'?

Ya hear what I'm pontificatin'?

(Ok, so that one was a little silly.)

I suppose it's a normal thing. :p But it happens more frequently during update time. At least I notice it more >_>

For the most part you're right on, but RDMs/BLMs/MNKs are complaining b/c the jobs haven't been specifically updated outside of minor nerfs in 4 years, while SAM & DRK seem to be getting updated weekly.

I'm bummed that I got a BLM spell that I can't use :(

Oh well. I bought Water III during lunch. So it is like a new spell to me! Right? Right!?!?!?

Not that anything is wrong w/ MNK, it's still a great DD and now a powerful soloer with /DNC, but it's more the people who care about the jobs saying wtf, at least do something to show recognition that the jobs exist...the last thing added to MNK was Subtle Blow sometime in 2004(I don't count merit groups b/c all jobs got them at the same time), the last tweak on RDM and BLM were the Gravity and Elemental Magic nerfs vs. NMs. At least BLM got a new spell for what it's worth.

I personally am very happy with RDM and if nothing else I'm just glad they didn't extend the Gravity nerf to Bind, but at the same time being thrown a small bone in the form of something cheezy like Enlight/Endark would be nice, just to show they gave the job a minute of thought in the last few years.

An MMO shouldn't need constant updates. It should be able to survive without any input from it's maker at all. Of course, most MMOs start out small and get larger over time instead of releasing a huge game at the start, but jobs not needed to be balanced should be considered a good thing, not a bad one.

BLM and RDM got /SCH update.

BLM, RDM and MNK are in the "ain't broke/don't fix" category. Giving them updates "just because" isn't a terribly good reason.

More than anything else in my normal realm of experience, FFXI seems to thrive on certainty and consistency. A new update can be an exciting time for pioneers who want to be the first to find and explore things just made a part of their world, but for the most part, the approach to take toward aspects of the game, the strengths, the flaws, the realms for debate, what's possible vs. what's feasible given community expectations, these are all known elements we can identify and navigate. We have resources collecting the static info of our world such as FFXIclopedia/BGWiki/FFXI-atlas/Vana'diel Bestiary. We have a solid basis for understanding jobs and their potential in realms such as XP, meripo, HNMs, BCNMs, solo xp, farming... What we like, what we dislike, what disappoints and vexes us...

And then an update comes along and throws our entire universe into Chaos. It doesn't help that SE's consistency has been a bit lacking in terms of making highly conservative changes in some areas and fairly radical ones in others, making it difficult to guess how far they might go, what mistakes they might make, whether those mistakes will be recognized and prioritized and resolved quickly, or bury themselves in the design, left to shape (damage?) the entire community's understanding until fixing it represents just as much of a problem as leaving it be...

There were some of us who wondered before it was implemented whether Corsair would ever be a viable job at all; the concept of incorporating randomness into a job's performance so directly seemed like it would go against the community's demand for absolute consistency. As it is, the effects of the random element are limited enough for them to manage, but imagine if the lowest phantom roll buff effect was 0, or if bust penalties applied to everyone in range of the roll?

Things will settle down, but right now, we have no idea what the FFXI universe looks like. We're grasping at straws trying to examine how we will play our jobs in the future, determine how we can prepare for the community's shifting expectations. Knowing that even a blatantly harmful result may be something we have to live with for months or years before it is revisited. It's only natural that people would be a bit stressed in facing that prospect.

While I agree that SE shouldn't mess with a good thing, it really does suck to see some jobs get new shinies while others don't.

Oh yeah, watch the price of Absorb-DEX plummet >_>

I'm still waiting for SE to give MNK Nunchaku has a new H2H weapon type.

Hagun is now the GK of choice for all Samurai (until Amano), nulling any previous arguements against it.

Just to correct myself, it appears (at least according to FFXIclopedia) that new SAM JA completely ignores the latent on Hagun. So to maintain the latent, you'd have to not use the new JA o.O

So SE stealth-nerfed Hagun, Cherry Muffin +1 NPC price (I told people it was too good to last long) and then the thing about Sublimation not stacking with Refresh.

All the DRKs on the server are even more emo than they were before. It's like a mini /wrists convention.

Don't let it get to you Nanatsu and just evaluate the situation with a cool-head (is this the right term?) like some of the others here do.
