View Full Version : What is your fondest noob memory

Simple question what is your fondest noob memory.

Mine would have to be my very first trip to the valkurm dunes from bastok. I was so pumped the whole way having just dinged lvl 10 RDM and getting all the great equipment i could. Leather Armor + 1 (I still have it kicking around as a matter of fact) was the first purchase i made other than spells. Happily trouncing any agro i came across on my way to Konstacht Highlands i was feeling like a king.

Upon entering Konstacht Highland I was overwhelmed at its size, i found a giant white building and checked around it. I found my first usefull item on that trek my DEM crystal. I proceded in the direction of the Dunes only to be trounced by a battering ram >.< i nearly died i was so close yet so far. A lovely group of people happened by and raised me and escorted me to the zone. It was then i joined my first linkshell tho sadly i forget the name i do not forget the people RIFTE,TRISTEN,ARWINESS,ARWEN,BULMARAESTAR of garuda, i thought they were the shit so powerful. Oh how noobish i was as they were only Lvl 30. Ariving in the dunes i was astonished to see the amount of people waiting and talking it was over whelming. Unfourtunatly several of us were killed by a zoned gobby who wanted blood. But my new friends came back and got me again and stayed with me the rest of the day ^^.

This was probably my most thrilling moment in my whole FFXI carear greater then the quests, job unlockings, missions, or even dinging 75 and capping my quest from noobhood to endgame. I miss those days bumbling along vanadiel in uncertainty afraid of everything that moves, and curious of things you shouldnt be. I miss the unexpected death when you would go to the rest room and come back and find your self dead from a random montser. Now that i am an experienced player i cant go back in time and revisit that except in my memories i know the game function and even starting a new charecter would take little or no time to level it again. As much as i love final fantasy 11 i need a new challenge in my life so i can feel nervous and excited again at the same time.

As for that Ram he regularily eats a Blizzard 3 at least 1 time a week...

Oh man right as i was thinking about mine too wow, ok.

When i first started the game I had NO clue what i was doing. I started in Sandoria because i always loved the whole "Knightly/Castley/Kingdomey" kind of scene. So i went out exploring and somehow (and amazingly without dying) ended up in Bastok...

Now i had no map and had no idea what the funk i was doing, so i spent three days /shouting in Bastok in all caps...

"CAN SOMEONE HELP ME GET BACK TO SANDORIA, IM LOST AND I CANT FIND MY WAY BACK HOME"

Now your probably thinking "why didnt you just death warp?" well, stupid little nooby selphiie put her HP in Bastok as soon as she saw the glimmering crystal "Oohh shineyyyyyy"

After 3 days of probably getting on everyones Black list in Bastok, someone finally agreed to escort me back to Sandoria.

Yeah, very nooblet.

I think my fondest newbie memory is probably the first time I zoned into LaTheine Plateau. Cheesy, I know, but that was the first time I realized just how big this game world was. I thought everything was going to be like Sandoria and Ronfaure. Nice zones, but not really expansive. I was terrified of everything there, but hooked by the game at the same time.

^^ thats awesome i also found cities by mistake, well windy i was about lvl 12
running away from some mobs i found selbina, took he boat from muhura, i wish i was a noob again so i can experience things again for the first time. Even my first trip to sky and dyna didnt over whelm i simply though im a 75 RDM i know what to do see something and kill it case closed. The only thing that was cool to me and suprising was running backwards through my carear it seemed when i went to the past for my first time, the return trip to Bastok was much like my first trip from it.

Mine is also Ram-related, looking back it's pretty golden:

Like many Sandy residents, I spent my early days leveling in LT and often times getting face-raped by random Rams that would seem to come out of nowhere despite the fact that were friggin' huuuuuuuge...I had just dinged 20 and was walking back from the Dunes to Sandy to meet my cousin so that we could make the big first voyage to Jeuno and get our Choco passes. On the way back I spotted a Ram, and noticed it conned DC or EM to me, something killable. When I caught up with my cousin, the first thing I said in pt chat was 'Holy shit we can get back those asshole rams now!!!", and we agree to take one down if we find it.

We head on out of Sandy and make our way to LT, and promptly spot a Ram. In the name of Great Justice I draw my sword and charge in, casting Dia on it. The Ram immediately one-shots me, then turns to my cousin and does the same. While we're laying on the ground some random noob runs by, he is also one-shotted, you see his dead body fly halfway across the screen before coming to a stop. That Ram's name was Bloodtear Baldurf, and this was the day I learned about Notorious Monsters, and how Bloodtear Baldurf =/= normal Ram.

For me, it would be getting the keys to Kazham and then journeying there. There were four of us who went up to the 3 beastmen areas to farm keys ... 3 RDMs and a WHM, all of us 25 and lower. How we survived I'll never know but it sure was fun!

We made it to Kazham, well, three of us did anyway as the other guy had to go to bed, and we explored the area for a while. I then fell underneath the wooden planks in the zone and I had to call a GM to move my character out of there. Looking back, my party probably could have invited a teleporter to get us out of there but we weren't thinking about it, only how funny it was that I was stuck. My friend got screenshots, but I doubt I still have them on my PC.

I miss those guys. :(

It was an RL friend of mine who got me started on this game, and we managed to play together exactly twice. The first time, he PLed me with what was probably like a level 15 WHM or something. The second time, I'd gotten to level 10 and we went to Konschtat Highlands together. I don't remember much about it, except that I was completely lost following him.

He warned me that if I saw any rams, I should run away because they'd slaughter us. However, at the time, I'd never seen sheep in the game, so I didn't know the difference. We got in a ways, and started fighting some, and then while we were resting, I saw a sheep. So I pointed at it, and then ran, found another sheep, and another, and just kept running away.

We ended up separated by probably not very much distance (but it seemed like it at the time!), because he had no idea why I was running away, and what from. I told him I saw a ram (and he believed me, because he'd never seen the initial pointing at the sheep). It wasn't long before he had to log off, and then I was stuck there, completely lost. It took me half an hour just to find my way out.

I spent the next week at least terrified of sheep, until I saw a real ram. And I never told him what had really happened.

Running from sandy to windy so that I could join the fishing guild. A friend showed me the way we were both lvl 12 without a subjob, avoiding aggro all the way.

Thing I miss most I think is the trains of gobs that peeps would bring to the selbina zone and everyone else panicking and trying to get away

My wife and a very good RL friend and I all started playing together, and at lvl 16 we decided to make the trek to Jeuno.

Still cracks us up to talk about how we wandered through M. Mountains, and then when we got to Sauromugue (sp), we had no clue what we were doing. I remember telling my friend (who was MNK at the time):

"Hey, run by that lizard and see if it aggro's..."

oh...i remeber the first nooblet thing i did...i started in Bastok(i saw it as an industrial city so i though i could find more and better stuff there...silly ><) so i started exploring everything talking to every1 and end up zoning into Korroloka tunel... i didnt knew about the check shit...so since i killed some worms at Gustaberg i though well i can kill one of this... but as soon as i aproached the mob...it used Gastric bomb or w/e its called and bam! 1-shoted! lol

after that i meet a couple nice guys that told me about Selbina while we were pt'n at Dangruf so we head to there... i remeber when i first saw the crag of Dem it looked so awsome to me. we walked around just to find ourselfs being chased by a ghost... we decide to fight it! 4 of us WHM WAR MNK WAR we fought him and 1 by 1 he started killing us till only i was still on foot...idk how but i killed it! damn i felt like da big shit... so well some1 Raised my friends and we continued our trip to Selbina. i meet a guy there that asked me if i would like to travel to Jeuno(i didnt knew where that was) and i agreed so we run through Pashow and Rolandberry he was like 20 and i was like 15...we arrive to Jeuno and i loved it there i meet first 2 Latin friends cuz they saw my Bazzar coment(typed in Spanish) they pearled me and i meet some good ppl on that Ls that are my best friends till now.

oh btw i also saw my first NM that day in Konschant Steelface Baldarik... i remeber seeing 3 Tarus killing it (RDM WHM BLM 55) the thing was so big to me so i thought those guys were so damn powerfull.

i also remeber the first time i saw a PLD 75 i made me a promise that some day ill look like him ( Adaman gear) and now i look better :P

i miss those days... but i still spend some time in Gustaberg helping new ppl and remembering the old days...

I felt exactly the same when I first trekked from Bastok to Konschtat Highlands and it kinda just hit me that I was basically running around a scaled down version of a real planet.

Other than that, I remember getting the idea that the only way to get to Jeuno was via airship travel, and I didn't think I'd ever get an airship pass. Around level 21 when I stopped getting invited to parties in the dunes, someone finally told me that you can reach Jeuno on foot. So I ran my ass through Pashhow and finally got to Rolanberry Fields to find I had no map. Someone was kind enough to run me towards Jeuno though.

/sigh Good times.

Favorite newblet memory?

At level 7, making the trek from Windurst to Sand'Oria for the awesomeness of the Wing Pendant that I just HAD to have.

The trip was pretty mild without much excitement, I'm pretty good with avoiding aggro and I had boughten most of the maps beforehand. However when I reached Mhaura and took the ferry who should spawn but none other than the Sea Horror!

Being a smart newb who at the time didn't know what the AH was and NPC'd all my fire crystals for gil (because hey, they're good gil) I knew that this was no ordinary monster and hid in the pilot's cabin to avoid detection.

However, 2 brave people decided to team up and attack the Sea Horror and save the ship. One was a lvl 46ish Rdm, the other, I forget what he was, in his 30s. The Rdm was instantly killed (he lasted long enough for stoneskin and blink to disappear), the other fellow thinking that this may not have been the best of ideas, ran into the pilot's cabin and begged my lvl 7 war for help. The Sea Horror came in and killed both of us, horribly, but strangely left the pilot alone.

Some kind fishermen on the ferry raised us after we reached Valkurm, and pointed me in the general direction for Sand'Oria.

And that's about it :P

2nd favorite memory was a exp party in King Ranperre's Tomb at lvl 14 or so, Wind Bats/Gobs/some worms made some pretty good exp that was a good alternative to the Dunes.

My favorite not so newblet memory would be summoning my wyvern for the first time as Dragoon. In all honesty that job is more than just a job to me, it's the job that many of my friends helped me to get, and have helped me on, it is the job I have met many friends on, and just, due to everything that I have experienced while playing FFXI, it is the job that to me almost symbolizes why I first started to play this game.

It's all about companionship, comraderie, and good times.

I love the stories you are all posting and can relate to so many of them. Esspecially the first trip on a boat, i got brutally slaughterd by a sea monk and was raised by a friendly WHM, damn i miss being a noob so much, the closest thing i have is finding my own noob to show the ropes to, their astonishment and clumsy play bring joy to my heart, as it reminds me of my first steps into the game.

It's funny. So many people's newbie memories involve dying to various things a lot of the time. I guess I was an overly cautious new player, because that really didn't happen to me, like, at all.

Duoing Doppelganger Gog (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Doppelganger_Gog) with my ex-girlfriend, me as Lv.24 WAR/MNK and she as Lv.24 THF/WAR, while camping Bomb King. Opened the fight with SA Fast Blade -> Sturmwind -> Reverberation. We were expecting that to leave it nearly dead, but we were very wrong. It still had about half its HP left, and it was pounding me VERY hard. I was starting to get low on HP and Suzanne did Provoke -> Perfect Dodge. I waited for it to wear, then I waited for her HP to drop to buy time before finally voking it off of her, popping Mighty Strikes and dropping another Sturmwind. Two or three crits later it was dead, with the both of us in the red.

Got a Cruel Spear for our troubles. Absolutely worthless, but we fought tooth and nail for it.

My fondest noob memory had a prolong effect.
When I gotten sneak on my WHM, my RL friend(DRK/WAR IG) told me that if I wanted sneak to last longer to removed my boots and any heavy armor. I did that until level 50BLM/WHM when my entire party let me know the truth after I told them all to remove their boots and any heavy armor or I am not casting sneak on them...yeah, good times

Getting my Skull for sj...

My hubby got me into the game when he was about 40 or so... he was dragging me around here and there... and for some reason we were in the maze.. I was maybe 10 or 12. I wish I remember why we were there... maybe a mission or quest? anyhows... he kills a skellie that aggros me and the skull drops... so he yells at me "Lot that!!" and I'm like "huh? wha? how?" so he walks me thru how to lot that. Once the skull is in my possession he tells me "Don't ever drop that, I don't care what else you have to drop, never drop that" I remember being afraid to even give it to my mog to hold until I got to 18 so I could turn it in :o

Oh man. There are so many awesome memories. Noob or otherwise.

I'd have to say that my single fondest noob memory would be the surprise friendship that sprung from someone who saw my war/whm and decided that it was good enough to trio w/ another war and his rdm. We learned the game together, leveled jobs together, quested together, laughed together, and vented on each other as well. He started a linkshell. He sacked me. ...but even though it was always his shell, he never really saw it like that. It was our shell. The other war that was in the shell faded out, like many others that have come and gone. Over the last year, we've picked up several members who are all really good people. We helped each other out, quested, leveled, and generally just had a good time. Lately, people have been drifting away as their interests change. I can only hope that they keep in touch. These people are my fondest noob memories.

...my runner up would be after I changed from war/whm and adopted a more proper whm/blm.

I was out soloing on my young whm in La Theine Plateau when I got a /tell from a 75whm/blm. I found that interesting, as I didn't know who this person was. He asked me various questions, like: "Did I like my job" and "How long have you been playing the game", etc., etc. Out of the blue, he asked me what my position was, told me not to log, and that he'd be there in a couple of minutes. He rode up, dismounted, talked to me for a bit, and asked me to accept a trade from him. He gave me 1 million gil, waved, remounted his bird, and trotted off. I was absolutely floored. When I asked him why, he replied that he "..had played this game for 4 years and it was time to move on." and that "I can't take it with me." ...all I could manage was a "Thank you very much!" and to wish him the best in his future endeavors. That day I vowed to return the favor. Nearly a full year later, I still plan on looking for my noob when I retire.

Ya me too im comming up on an important step in my life i have graduated law school and am now in an electronic industrial controls course (figure i may as well tackle blue and white collar so i have some fall back) I currently have employment as an intern legal assistant in a respected law firm, however i am not as pleased as i thought i would be. Sooner or later im going to retire and need someone to drop my stuff to. My sights are set on a RDM who will stick with the job. I dont see the point in giving my stuff to LS mates as they are able to do most of it themselves, i just need to find a noob when i plan my retirement.

I remember my first few days playing FFXI more clearly than pretty much anything else in my life. Which is horribly saddening. But I digress...

Let me add another ram related story.

Shortly after my first log in I was offered a pearl to a newbie LS, Traveling, created by a helpful bilingual JP. The shellholder was incredibly nice and patient, but the newbies he was trying to help were... well, noobs. The very day the shell fractured she got me my subjob items in Buburimu. An hour later I'm standing at the dock as a level 1 RDM/BLM, on his way to San d'Oria to finally meet the San d'Orian friends I'd made in Traveling (now in NotAGuild) character to character. Sea Horror spawned but did not aggro me. Seeing it reminded me to set homepoint in Selbina which was fortuitous. I crossed most of La Theine without issue. Then the screen started shaking. Suddenly I was standing a bit farther back up the road and a shaggy, horned mountain was head butting me.

So yeah, TLDR: I got killed by Bloodtear Baldurf too.

My fondest memory was my very first quest: the Gustaberg Tour. It was the day after the PS2 release, so newbies were abundant at that time. I was exploring Bastok when I saw a /shout about a group doing Gustaberg Tour, and that they needed a few more players. I debated whether or not to take the opportunity, since I wasn't sure whether I wanted to mess with joining a party yet or not.

I decided to do the Gustaberg Tour with the group. And as it turned out, I didn't even have the quest flagged, so I didn't get the reward. But all 5 of the other players wound up on my friends list. My first social LS was started by one of the players later that week, and that group became the start of that LS. I even found new friends though subsequent runs of the Gustaberg Tour. To this day, my 3 closest in-game friends were all in that LS, and 2 of them went on that very first Gustaberg Tour with me.

Thinking back to that first day on the game makes me think a bit about .hack//GU. I posted a thread about the game (http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/video-games/70050-hack-gu.html), but it turned into more about introspection regarding how your early player-to-player interactions in an MMO could have a profound effect on how you play and view the game.

Walking into gusgen mines. Have a pretty good memory so I thought I could just back track. Never thought that If I opened one of 3 doors, someone else could close them. Spent 30 mins shouting for someone to open door. Spent another hour and a half wandering aimlessly. Finally a monk passed and I attached myself to him while he farmed. He eventually led me to daylight. Then I found out about ffxi-atlas. Now I'm questing all maps. Halfway done with Crawler's nest and I solo bombs in uleguerand range so might as well get it as well

I've got three noob memories, and I <3 them!

I started playing the game right at the time the CoP expansion came out. My first memory was while I was running around in Windy as a level 4 or so Thief. I didn't know what in the heck I was doing, and I was mostly getting caught up in corners, or in buildings, or wherever. This guy by the bonecrafters shop stops me, and we have about an hour conversation about our real lives, who we were, how we started, etc. He gives me 50k, and until he stopped playing the game, helped each other out when we needed it. Then, later that day, I was in Saruta leveling, when this giant Galka Paladin came and cast Protect on me. He pl'd me (which I didn't realize what that even meant) until his friends got on, and then gave me 25k. People were so damn generous back then.

My second memory is of my husband and I. With our handy Brady guide (that had so many errors!) in tow, he was a MNK12, I was THF12, no subs. We wanted to get our subjob items, but since we had no ls, we had no idea how in the heck to get them. So we looked it up, and found out that they dropped from crabs. Well we looked at the closest crabs near us, and they were in Burburimu. We were like, with the two of us, OF COURSE we can handle them! So we made it out to the water with no aggro. Started attacking a crab and just got completely annilhated. We didn't even understand parties or anything back then.

Oh! And the time we paid money for a Tele-Dem from Windy Woods, without knowing you needed to have the crystal before you could get teleported. LOL!

Fun times...*sigh*

I remember checking my items after I died the first few times because I thought it would be like "Game Over" restart from HP minus the items + EXP you had gained since you'd last been there.

I also freaked out when I got my first linkshell, I couldn't understand where all the people talking were especially when they addressed me by name and I couldn't see them.

I'm still in my noob stages so I have plenty of things happening as we go xD I think my fondest memory would have to be the first time I went to the Dunes. I was terrified of parties before, but I found a bunch of other new players with my boyfriend and we levelled from 13 to 15 in very quick succession then realised it was 2am and both my boyfriend and I had work the next morning xD

It was a fun night. I've had some amazing experiences in the Dunes, and some absolutely rotten ones. I guess it comes with the zone. ;)

Duoing to 25MNK/WAR with my wifes RDM/WHM, we start to do the windy missions and casually enter something called a BCNM.

Scary music ensues and we run up a slope and see a huge dragon. After the initial scare, we decide to just go for it, so we run at the dragon with hundred fists and chainspell up. We kill the dragon and then the eye in that order. We survive and then talk about it in the LS and everyone is like "no way, that can't be duo'ed". Made us smile.

When I started, I started out as a WAR with an axe and shield and I remember running through Saruta towards Giddeus. It was like the first time I used Raging Axe and remember how great it felt when I dropped a yagudo scribe with my WS. I was wearing full scale armor and I thought I looked really cool at the time. :p Plus back then I thought the scenery was great and I really enjoyed running around and listening to the music.

The first party I remember had 3 members. We formed up in La Thiene and eventually got just a bit too high for the zone. I suggested the dunes, the party leader suggested Palborough Mines. So off we went, hiking through La Thiene > Valkurm > Konschat > North Gustaberg > South Gustaberg > North Gustaberg > Palborough Mines. As I recall, we fought about 3 fights before we wiped and disbanded.

My favorite noob memory...

I would have to say, that my first trip to Selbina, and then on to Mhuara is my favorite memory. I remember seeing the boat come in to the port and thinking, "Wow! Wouldn't it be cool to ride that!" After a few minutes deciding on if I should go or not, I paid the 200 gil and hopped on board just as it was leaving. (Might have been 100 gil, not sure.)

I was talking to a friend of mine, a higher level I had met in Gustaberg a few levels earlier, and telling him how amazing the boat is, and how I love the music. Now, this is where he tells me somethings important, and that I won't forget any time soon.

"It may be fun now, but watch out for pirates."

I thought he was joking, so I chuckled and peered over the the edge of the boat at the islands we had passed, when all of a sudden, the music changes. The more ominous music clued me in that something wasn't right. That's when I saw the other boat pull up beside the one I was riding in. At first, I thought it was a cargo ship, or another ship with players, so I waved. Another player on the boat came up to the deck, he was around level 60, and a thief if I'm not mistaken, and this is what happened.

Fliegar: Awesome! Another ship, is it an event, or just another player ship?

Player: Get the hell below deck! You're gonna die if you stand there.

Fliegar: ...What? How can I die? Enemies can't attack you on boats...

Player: Just go to the bottom, I'll show you something cool.

The thief and I headed to the bottom of the ship, and he told me to stand behind a box, which, now that I look back at it, wouldn't really do anything. He told me he was going topside to see who it was.

"Silverhook starts to cast Ice Spikes."

This is when I knew I was in trouble, and that there were, in fact, pirates out for blood. I stood below deck, and heard the sounds of fighting above. A few seconds after Silverhook cast Ice Spikes on himself, I get a message in my chat log that the thief had died.

"Watch for pirates when you ride boats." He said to me a few moments later, and we docked in Mhuara.

I find it all a little too ironic, but it may just be me.
