noooo dont do that lol. Paladin/summoner is a bad combo.

With what you're saying, I think the best fit for you is a dark knight (though you should level Scythe along with greatsword I think). Elemental magic is kind of pointless the higher you get, but they do have some interesting enfeeble-ish spells like drain stats, TP, etc as well as drain and aspir.

Read this (http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/frequently-asked-questions/66059-job-should-i-play.html) if you haven't. Along with the stickies in the Dark Knight (http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/dark-knight-38/) forum.

A few things.

First, you don't make a Dark Knight. You make a Warrior, Monk, Thief, Red Mage, White Mage, or Black Mage, and you level those up to 30 and unlock Dark Knight. I'd suggest Warrior, because that's what you'll sub most of the time. But you'll also sub Thief, and Ninja, and a few other random subs depending on what you're doing at the time.

And seriously, read the various links that people have been providing you with all day today.

/THF, /War, /Sam, /Nin are most commen for Damage for xp Party

/BLM, /Nin, /WHM, /Rdm, /Blu, /DNC are some I've used for soloing and goofing off.

So basicly just about anything and everything.

But for advancde explaing as to why I would suggest you read the stickys Ellipes suggested. I don't think they have been updated to include /DNC or /SCH but by the time you unlock DRK and lvl it to 30 you should see a common theme of what most ppl use to sub.

Phanex

Just go DRK/WAR or DRK/SAM or DRK/THF and you'll be fine trust me.

Dark Knights use both Great Sword and Black Magics. So you should be happy with the job once you unlock it. Good luck.

honestly, given your attitude, you might be better off going with another game. FFXI is not easy, nor is it friendly for people that don't research their stuff well ahead of time.

In a typical scenario, you would become the bad guy by being bad.
Honestly, though, this game probably isn't quite what you think it is.

Two good laughs.

Anyways, Dark Knights can use Great Swords, AND Scythes, so whatever you're hitting people with you're bound to look cool.

Well in that case, after having studied the situation and employed extreme logic, I think it's safe to say that you're the confused guy, rather than the bad guy.

Like, a troll who is a doctor or lawyer. It generally requires an advanced degree, as opposed to just general study.

If you're really that confused, FFXI is not the game for you. Play something else, your potential COP party will thank you.

MMORPGs aside-- getting into a frying pan sounds like it could be a deadly form of suicide, and I do not condone your course of action.

However, it is always good to be well-informed.

The thing is, it's not a black and white answer where someone can just come in here and go "Go for a DRK/WAR" unequivocally. There are a lot of variables and intricacies, and no one can really tell whether that's going to end up actually being fun for you. Because the way DRK plays in this game might not end up being what you hoped, which will lead to sad faces all around. The best anybody can really do is tell you about the jobs to help you make the decision on your own.

And in a way, it's a bit of a moot point. You have to get to level 30 before you can become a Dark Knight. That means you have to also get at least one other job to 15, so that your subjob is fully leveled while you're getting that first job (likely WAR) to 30. That's 45 levels of you playing this game before you can even think about DRK. That'll give you a chance to see how things work to a point, and party with lots of different jobs.

And there are almost no jobs in this game that can get away with only one subjob. Almost all of them should have at least two subjobs ready for certain situations; with most it's more like three to six. That thread I linked you to, and the Dark Knight forums contain all sorts of information on it.

But you say you've read those, and you still aren't coming back with specific questions we can actually hope to answer with some reasonable amount of accuracy. "What should I do?" is too vague. Now if you come back with something like "Okay, I've read the stickies, and it looks like Dark Knight is a good match, but I want to know why it's important to have Samurai available as a subjob" or "Why shouldn't I just use greatsword all the time?" then you'll get better answers (even though those are also covered in stickies).

No one can tell what you're still confused about. Specific questions that demonstrate that you've read up a bit get much better replies than trying to get people to tell you what to do.

What kinda crap is that, anyhow?

The game lets you do what you want, and if you're stubborn enough, you can do it, and if your are happy who cares. Simple senario, you want to fight with sword and do magic. You don't care what the sword rating is for the job, you just want to chop away, so level red mage to 30 and go get a beastmaster sub job. Level up your beast, they can use much of the same armor as red mage and same swords, although they use an axe better, but you want to use a sword- go ahead. You can punch with your bare fist if you feel like it. Soon your pets will do all the killing and you can wear what you want and swing a popsickle stick if you feel like it.
You wont get parties, you won't get a level a month, you can't do most missions or quests, but you are playing " your style". Everyone is suggesting you read to learn what the basics are, kinda like drivers training. You can drive down the main road and go pretty far, fast and safe , or go off road, crash and burn and disappear off the face of the earth. It's your game- go play.

What you describe in your initial post describes Dark Knight just about perfectly. However, Dark Knight is something you have to earn. The ability to level that is a goal you'll need to reach. In the meantime, you'll have to make do with playing something other than Dark Knight, in ways that don't resemble how Dark Knight plays. If you can't deal with that, you may want to look into an MMO that centers more on instant gratification such as WoW.

At the beginning of the game, you can only choose from six jobs: Warrior, Monk, Thief, Black Mage, White Mage, and Red Mage. Of those, Warrior comes the closest to playing like a Dark Knight, particularly if you use a Great Axe -- incidentally one of WAR's two best weapon types. While it possesses no magic, you still get to hit things with a big weapon. Levelling WAR also has the advantages that it makes an excellent subjob for Dark Knight when you gain access to it later and that much of the gear you buy for it will also be useful for DRK.

If the magic is more important than the big weapon, then you may want to consider Red Mage instead; while red mage's melee ability with its one-handed swords or daggers quickly falls behind, at low levels it's still capable of both hitting things and nuking. However, the red mage is more often called upon to enfeeble and heal, even at those levels, and RDM isn't nearly as accepted as a DRK subjob.

When you begin, you cannot set a support job. That ability can be earned at level 18 through a quest. Once you do, be aware that your support job must be levelled seperately by switching to it as your main job. Note that your support job is capped at half the level of your current main job. This has significant implications, not the least of which is that any skills that your support job has that your main job doesn't will be very weak. Warrior/black mage works extremely poorly because of this. You will have to keep waiting. In general, pair melee jobs with melee subjobs and mage jobs with mage subjobs.

Once you reach level 30 with any of the six original jobs, you can do quests to unlock any of the other fourteen, though some of these quests will be far easier than others. The one for Dark Knight is fairly simple, just tedious. Once you complete it, have fun making your way to 75! -- Pteryx

I'm pretty sure that this was what inspired the "professional troll" comments.

DRK is the obvious answer, yes.... but I think PLD/SMN is the *correcter* answer.

Ai caramba. How has this thread extended to 3 pages in such a negative fashion?

---

Correct answer:

You don't have to knock yourself out worrying about what job to pick. FFXI lets you change jobs any time you like just by talking to a moogle.

Based on your description, you'll probably want to raise Monk to level 15, Warrior to 30, then unlock Dark Knight and go from there.
