Question about subbed enspell damage:

Is this capped at a particular amount? For example, right now I have 81 enhance skill on Paladin, which according to FFXIclopedia should give me an enspell damage of 8 (SQRT(81)-1). I'm still only seeing 6 damage, with no compensating weather or day factors. Anyone know why this is?

Use this: FFXI Enhancing Calculator (http://nullvector.com/enhancing.php) Comes up with 8. Its probably that your terribly low skill is partially resisted or you're fighting something with some element resistance or MDB. My enspells are 19 normally. Yet fighting some DC demons for a coffer key, I was getting consistent 14. I can only assume it was the element I chose or a native magic resistance. These demons were varying jobs, none of which shoudl have had MDB trait.

I just tested in West Sarutabaruta.

BRD75/RDM37. Enhancing at 109 (capped).
Enspell damage on Enaero with no resists on Firesday and no weather produced a consistent 9 points of damage.

I have no idea why you're seeing only 6 points of damage. A resist would cut the damage in half (rounded down) to 4, not 6.

What were you fighting?

It sounds like you fought something with Shell on. I seem to get -2 enspell damage on mobs with Shell too.

arkaine, Demons reduce magic damage by a fixed percentage.

And yes, the OP is fighting something with Shell, fixed magic damage reduction, or possibly MDB (I can't remember if MAB/MDB enter the equation for enspells.)

They don't, only Shell/TMDA do.

It was a weapon in Qufim. I didn't think to take the arcana into account. Thanks for the replies!

As I recall the Dancing Weapons in Qufim are RDM-types, and can cast Shell. That would explain the damage differential.

Weapons also get a 85% TMDA cut as well, even without shell you'd be seeing reduced damage on Enspells, and that does work out to 6/hit w/ 81 skill.
