View Full Version : Character Art Freebies.

Edit: Please limit it to 1 character, to be fair to others. Please decide on the character AND outfit beforehand, instead of giving me a choice between several screenshots, (ideally, you would just show me 1 frontal full body screenshot) so that I don't have to juggle a lot of images per request. No couple art whatsoever, as that would force me to go beyond my 2-3 hour completion time per piece. I encourage any and all special preferences you may have to help guide my drawing.=)

Hi,

I sometimes draw character art freebies of people’s characters. Reply to this or message me with a screenshot of your character, along with any details you may want me to know, and I’ll add your character to its proper list. Every time I want to draw a character, I select from one of the lists using a completely random selector, and always draw the one who comes up, then message it to the winner. I’ve done this for a while on the popular Gaia forum site, and am now doing it for the most popular MMORPGs, including:

Ragnarok Online
World of Warcraft
Guild Wars
FlyFF
IMVU
Final Fantasy XI
Gaia Online
City of Heroes/Villains
Aeria Games
Outspark Games

Here are the more popular examples of the ones I’ve done for other game forums. They always take me between 1-3hrs each. Many are quite anime-looking, but I can attempt a more realistic style upon request. Just let me know any preferences you have at all.
I can also add any original character of your own creation, or a character of yours from any unlisted MMO, (sorry, no couple art, as that would force me to spend more time on the piece), which go in a special Misc. list for those purposes, but please limit it to 1 character request per game, to be fair to others. Feel free to ask to be added. Everyone gets added, no one gets rejected.=)

I don't think that's a mithra exactly, my guess is that it's more of an original catgirl character of some sort.

Still hot though

i haven't heard of the 'modelviewer' you use, but it might work if you hit the "Print Screen" button ("prnt scr," next to "backspace") to capture the screen and then "Paste" it in microsoft Paint

It's all good, Sevv's gonna take care of it for me. The modelviewer(usually AltanaView I think) is what you use to get pics like Sevv's, it lets you view character models with whatever gear you want to put on them in different poses and whatnot, it reads the .dats directly from the FFXI files I believe. Unfortunately I'm a console player(PS2 & 360) and I don't have a comp capable of running FFXI, so I can't use a modelviewer and it's difficult to get nice, clean screenshots.

You don't have to able to run FFXI to use a model viewer... As long as you can install the program (which you won't be able to do only if you don't have the space, or if you have a processor that can't top out over 200MhZ, if not lower) you can run the model viewer. The only thing you can miss out on is the updates, which generally don't have many dats in them (exceptions are, of course, AFs for new jobs and new equipment that may come out). However, most machines which may not be able to run FFXI can still launch POL and FFXI enough to get the updates as well.

I'm just saying.

You would need to download the game first then the Model Viewer to do so. What the Model Viewer does is read the numerous types of files (armor, face, monster, music, pose, etc) that FFXI displays throughout gameplay. The Model Viewer simply runs a program that lets you pick and choose what you want to see without actually playing the game.

But as the game gets updated and new armor is added, you would need to update as well, and to update you would need an account. So unless you could find a free download of the game, along with someone willing to send you all the files that get installed via update, the Model Viewer wouldn't be that useful.

Though I'm sure people here would be more then happy to help you create these characters if you could give them some sort of description of how they look. Be advised however, the face selection in this game is limited at best.

The "Brain of Knowledge" thing is actually a forum title for having XX number of posts or something...I think, not an actual user name. And while it won't be super accurate or anything, I can try to "ffxi-cise" some of the characters. The thing with FFXI is that most of the armor and clothes have a medieval feel from numerous cultures of old, so it's hard to match up to more contemporary, modern-like clothing. But a few ideas pop into mind from those pics.

so I was wondering when the "lottery" would be over? 1 week perhaps?

I think it's more of a "when he feels like working" thing rather then an actual timed lottery or something. When it's done it's done and we'll find out who got picked then.

AndrewAnimation
01-23-2008, 11:14 AM
that would be awesome if you wouldn't mind doing that! xD
yeah i know how it is with medieval-based character creation, after playing soulcalibur 3

yup, sort of like that. it's very scheduled, though, so i can explain the whole thing of when i'll make the drawings. i make 1 character every 2 days, as i've been doing so far, but i give each game/forum i draw for its own chance, til every game received one drawing each, then i start all over, the order always being as random as the winners. unfortunately, with 10 games on my list now, that calculates to roughly only 1.4 drawings per game per month. i can't up the production because it would interfere with my normal job, but, keeping it the way it's at now, i don't see myself ever stopping. it'll just be really slow-moving

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y226/shadowfalcon76/HumeGirl1.jpg

The others, especially the "Anna Molly" one, might require some .dat modifications, but that's just a matter of finding .dats that look similar to what you want, and the mod community is rather robust for this game. I'll see if I can't whip something up as well; this sounds like fun.

Modified armor will appear in game on your screen only, but have no affect on anything but how you see it. It's also only something that can be done on the PC as you need to actually swap some files around to get it to work.

And I tried to get a few done last night, mainly based on this pic:
superheroes2 by ~AndrewAnimation on deviantART (http://andrewanimation.deviantart.com/art/superheroes2-66545060)

From left to right, this is the closest I could get.

Yellow Ninja Chick (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v175/Ziero01/Stuff/200801240210389.jpg)
There really is no tight clothing in game that has that shade of yellow. Infact I think there's only one set of armor at all that is even close to that yellow, and it's a Plate mail set. So I got the closest I could get to the overall feel. She's wearing a mix of Monk artifact armor (head and body) with Ninja relic armor (legs, feet, hands)

Blue Guy with Sword (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v175/Ziero01/Stuff/200801240220149.jpg)
Again, nothing in game comes close to the vivid blue used on this guy, especially armor that's tight and sleeveless on top but loose at the legs. What I ended up giving him was a Padded Harness with Beast Artifact legs and Lord's Sabatons, which are actually from the aforemention Yellow Platemail set. The sword was pretty easy though.

Red Armored Guy with Trident (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v175/Ziero01/Stuff/200801240156339.jpg)
Easily, the easiest of the bunch. A full suit of Crimson Scale Mail combined with the Halloween event Pitfork. I think it's a pretty good match.

White Samurai Guy (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v175/Ziero01/Stuff/200801240202307.jpg)
Again, another easy one, but not as close as the red armored guy. This one's wearing a simple Jujistu Gi with White Slacks and Solea shoes. If the gi had no sleeves and the slacks were a bit looser, it would be an almost exact match imo.

And finally
The Schoolgirl (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v175/Ziero01/Stuff/200801240213235.jpg)
This was again a *real* easy one and a look that could have only come about since the last expansion came out. She is wearing Scholar artifact armor, which is one of the newest classes in this game, and is essentially a schoolgirl outfit. The coat and skirt are all one piece so I couldn't choose a different coat without loosing the skirt. But from the waist down it's an exact match, and if the coat were blue it'd be almost perfect.

Now this is the best I could do without using dat mods, but I'm sure others out there can do better.

Yes, and there have already been .dat mods for pretty much every NPC in game ported to most races. Including Lion's outfit for Hume females and Mithra (not sure about elf chicks though, they never seem to get any love =( )

Again, what I did was without dat mods. With dat mods you could easily get exact, or near exact renderings of all that armor. Heck there are mods out there to make the Scorp Harness match every type of AF for jobs that can wear it already, and I know there are mods that match the 'revealing' look of the Ninja girls outfit as well. Just browse some of the dat mod communities and you should be able to find things that fit much better.

lol thanks ziero, that was awesome!!:D :D

yeah, i like the [red and black guy] the best too! but i really like the [yellow ninja lady] one as well, despite that it's armor instead of a spandex kinda thing, as those costumes are only one of a few i draw them in, armor being something else that suits her=D
i love the [schoolgirl] one too (actually the same as the Lilith character, but the drawing of her in the group shot was kinda off, especially since she looked happy), and that outfit would actually suit Anna Molly really well, despite not matching the outfit i happened to draw her in! yeah, a blue jacket would've been more up Lilith's alley=D

cool and that's without mods!
if i ever get far enough with my goals, i'd have the mods capable of being seen by everyone, but i assume there would be huge download/bandwidth/lag issues with that (not sure of which it would be)
thanks for taking the time to do that for me ziero!

As for .dat modding, I recommend FFXIdats.com, I've always used that site above all the others. Heh, go figure. I guess I gravitate towards the name more often than I thought. There's actually another character actually named Lilith on my server, Kujata; she's a Japanese player. That was originally the name I was gonna take, but she got to it first. A new one, Lilithe, has recently appeared. She's low level, so either she's new to the game, or just new to the server (transferred over) and just playing low level jobs every time I see her.

That makes three "Liliths" on Kujata. Just another reason Kujata is just that much more awesome.

AndrewAnimation

lol i don't know of the servers and everything, but if i wanted the lilith name, i might've tried Lillith, LlLlTH, LiIith, IiLith, or IiIith. i always tried to use that i/L trick every time i could on chat sites in the distant past :P

To be fair, it's kind of hard for someone who's not familiar with the game to tell the difference. Especially when the original image has all the facial features...including the ears...completely hidden.

Um, millions? I'm the kind of guy that prefers purchasing everything, but even I know it's just not feasable when it comes to web and graphic design software. I found something down at the old Bay for Creative Suite 3, a two and a half thousand toitle piece of software. All I was really looking for was the Macromedia set.

Sorry, I just had to interject here but... Flu shots are almost completely worthless. That virus has so many mutated strains that it is impossible for it protect against them all, so while you may be spared catching four or five similar strains, one of the other fifty will get you eventually. A much better solution is to simply stay healthy and fit, however if you cannot manage this simply boosting your body's immune functions or taking a general antiviral dose will help more in the long run.

yeah vitamin c is good=) but i still recommend flu shots because they first find out what the most common strain is that year, and then base the shot on that one

lol good luck to those of who you wanna be drawn the most xD

$1000 != millions.

Photoshop alone is ~$700.

With Adobe's activation, I wouldn't want to get a second hand copy.

Um, exaggeration?
Um, millions?

The question mark (?), also known as an interrogation point, question point, query, or eroteme, is a punctuation mark that replaces the full stop at the end of an interrogative sentence. It can also be used mid-sentence to mark a merely interrogative phrase, where it functions similarly to a comma, such as in the single sentence "Where shall we go? and what shall we do?", but this usage is increasingly rare. The question mark is not used for indirect questions. The question mark character is also often used in place of missing or unknown data.
The question "... millions?" indicates you did not know. The phrase "... millions" would be exaggeration.

BTW, did you not know you were exaggerating?

Secondly, I gave you the benefit of the doubt that you would pick up second hand (did you know e-bay is not the only source of second hand merchandise? amazing isn't it) instead of outright pirating it.

If I were a graphics professional, $700 would be nothing but an investment. If I was an amateur, I would look elsewhere.

In neither case did I just take what I had no right to.

I appreciate your concern, but I have more important concerns at the moment than paying for software I use maybe once or twice a month. If I were actually making a profit off of it, or planned on using it more seriously I would purchase a liscense.

My moral compass is working perfectly fine.

Oh look at me all big and tough because I can't afford to pay for software.

I Thanked you because that was actually pretty funny.

Also, of course, you know I must respond by observing your behavioral similarities to an evil clown (http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/evilclown.htm)

'Course, I was never afraid of clowns (not even It), and I can be a bit of a clown myself, though I'd loathe to be associated with evil. But that's off topic. In fact, this whole thing's off-topic: the only "topic" to be had here is somebody making fantasy character art for interested persons.

(Also, I 'd at necromancer (http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/necromancer.htm).)

To be fair, licensing is not the same as ownership.

Although that's a moot point since Dak is too stupid to have been making that point.

I appreciate your concern, but I have more important concerns at the moment than paying for software I use maybe once or twice a month.
If you don't need it, why did you bother stealing it?

I'll be the first to say that copyright law is horribly, horribly broken right now, and has been for a long time. The internet is highlighting this issue.

However, disagreeing with the morals of individuals that produce copyrighted works does not give you the right to take said works. I don't believe that people should charge money for food-- but I would never walk into a grocery store and swipe snacks.

I personally have no software worth money on my computer. Everything is 100% gratis-- and the makers intended it that way. And for whatever it is you're doing in photoshop if you're enough of an idiot to pirate it and only use it once a month, he same or similar quality can probably be got in GIMP. Hope you do realize how easy it is to track cracked software, though. Is a piece of software you don't need worth thousands of dollars in legal fees and settlement costs?

AndrewAnimation
02-18-2008, 05:12 AM
i think the problem though is that it's so wide-spread now, whether it's software, movies, games, or especially music=( anyone who gets caught would probably be like 'i'm not paying a dime til you do the same to everyone else'

AndrewAnimation
02-19-2008, 05:39 AM
i'm not sure=( but i only have 1 more game to draw for before i start the entire list allll over again. the list is 10 games long. once the list starts over, FFXI could be anywhere from chosen immediately to chosen last. i keep the game selections random too=) all in all though, it'll run real slow, unfortunately. but worry not, for i shall definitely PM any winners, so you don't have to bother with this thread if you don't like=)

yup onion, but once a game is picked, it can't get picked again till all the games are picked. i wouldn't do the orderly list method, or else the last posters wouldn't get an equal chance, and i wouldn't like that=) i <3 random
