Hello,

I just started the game last night and decided to go with a Hume Monk. I am currently level 8, and have a few questions.

1.) I have been looking at the "monk faq" sticky at the top of this page, and I was looking at the equipment section more in depth. Since I am approaching level 10...I was looking to get the "ryl ftm cesti". Everywhere I looked, I haven't been able to find them. The only thing that looks relatively similar is the the "ryl archer cesti". Are they the same things?

2.) I have been getting exp very slowly lately. Since I am from bastok, so I have mostly been training on vomp hill? Is there a better place to train? When would you suggest going to valkurm?

3.) Anyone have a garuda linkshell? ;)

Thank you,
-Adam

You can get them from trading conquest points at a gate gaurd. Think you need rank 2 to be able to purchase them. You could just wait until lv11 and get the Brass Baghnakhs or use the lv9 Brass Knuckles. I would personally stick to the brass knuckles until lv15.

Can either solo to 12 in konschat on worms or in gustaberg killing everything for a couple of hours. You can get a PT at 10 in valkurm but its not really faster half the time.

'Ryl Ftm' stands for 'Royal Footman'

In order to buy them with conquest points as the poster above mentioned you'd have to be San d'Orian and your nation may need to be in first place (don't know much about the Sandy items) - although you should still be able to buy them at the auction house regardless. You might have a hard time finding them for sale at the auction houses in Bastok or Windurst though.

On a sidenote, as Monk, you'd be doing fine with no weapon at all up to level 20 too. Saves a lot of delay but lowers your damage only a little bit.

Except if you have to fight monsters with higher def. (crabs for example)

Just look for group while you are solo'ing in Konschat, there is always a chance a good party is out there... even more-so today with most players lvling new jobs with PLs haha

At level 10 I usually just sit around in the Konschat Highlands with my looking for group tag up. Even though I don't usually play as combat jobs I find that level 10 it's a lot easier to die there than other places. But that could just be my general suckage.

Paitence is the main thing you need, but you will get invites. Before going and putting up your LFG tag in the highlands (LFG tag is under the party menu, by the way, seek party) buy a map of the dunes (I think it's clumped in with the map of sandoria) and it shouldn't take that long to get an invite, dunes parties always have members coming and going, and there's not much room to pick and choose.

When you're in party, if you try your best and are willing to learn, when they see you have no Linkshell icon next to your name, they may ask you to join theres. (Unless you have a bazarre open, then they'll just see that brown bag next to your name.)

Hope this helps a little

The sooner you learn what your limitations are, the better. (Even more-so as a melee job~)

At lvl 10 you can fight Bees near the Craig of Dem, just be carefull of the Final Still TP move Bees use. And at lvl 12 you can fight worms as mentioned in another post.

Even Cat Baghnakhs are better than being barehanded, even at 20.Except if you have to fight monsters with higher def. (crabs for example)There's no relationship between Defense and DMG. There is no such thing as more of your damage getting through the mob's Defense or anything like that. The change in damage will stay proportional.

Edit: Something no one seems to have mentioned: always eat food when you fight. Always. You'll want Meat Jerky. You can find NPC vendors that will sell it cheap by checking Somepage (http://ffxi.somepage.com) and FFXIClopedia (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org).

Armando could you explain this more or point me to a place, I am a little confused. I remember fighting Crabs, Crawlers, or using the spell Cocoon and watching DMG reduce when it is active and increase when it wares off.

Attack affects your damage versus defense (not your weapon damage).

Having higher damage weapon, only increases your damage if you have enough attack to make use of it. (short answer).

In Dyna run atm.. basically you lose damage from defense up moves like cocoon because your attack lowers your pdif which is a multiplier on your base damage.
However - not using weapons at all on monk means you've got a weapon rank of either 0 or 1 I think... been a while since I checked H2H. So - if you increase your weapon damage by 1, assuming you've a cRatio of 1, you'll increase per hit by one.

DMG =/= Damage dealt. DMG is the damage rating of your weapon(not the amount of actual damage you do), which is the base for calculating how much damage is done to a monster. This is a set value, it's the other variables in the damage formula that are affected by the variances in your/the monster's stats. 'Attack' is the stat that is compared against Defense for these purposes.

1) Does this mean there is a cap of "attack" a person can use per weapon and any extra "attack" is useless?

2) Does this mean if I reach the "attack" cap for a weapon, my damage for that weapon would vary only a little?

DMG does not affect the calculations for Attack or Defense in any way.

What I meant with my comment is that there are no bonuses for high DMG. A weapon with 40 effective DMG will always hit twice as hard as a weapon with 20 effective DMG, no matter how low or high the mob's Defense. The proportions are kept.

Your Attack is capped when it exceeds twice the mob's Defense. And no, it'll still vary.

Ans 1: Yes, but it's hard to reach. You need to be at 2.0 cRatio, which is your attack/their defense - level correction.

Ans 2: Yes.. By x1.6 - x2.4 base weapon damage, with fStr modifying your weapon damage up to weapon rank iirc.
