View Full Version : I'm really liking my PT DPS
I'm been parsing my results from the last 3 PT's (from 35-38) and including my pet damage have done very well. More people should invite BST to PT's for filler DPS spots. We're also pretty good pullers with Wide Scan and the ability to sacrifice our pet to single pull linked mobs. I like the fact that because my DPS is split between my pet and I I'm able to contribute a lot of total DPS without any agro issues.
I know I know BST is for solo. It's my only DPS job though and PTing is fun.

I was parsing my damage as a ranger (very well geared) at lvl 47 against a decently geared bst with a mite familiar same level. We mostly fought spiders in quicksands so the comparison shouldn't be too lopsided. With his pet, he did more damage than I did, and this thought ran to my head, "Why am I spending 5k+ an hour again to level a ranger?"

I suspect that in the end-game where players have lots of merits and uber gear the pet falls behind. While gear improves 100% of other player's DPS, it only improves 50% of ours. We also only have one merit to improve our pet.
That's my guess anyway. The jug pets are pretty great in the leveling stage though.

LoL we showed the community this when they first implemented the MPK patch. Yet were still LOLBST.

There are some misconceptions out there thats for sure. I think part of the problem is that we usually assume a player will have average/decent gear or weapons. (or use the appropriate pet for bst) This doesn't always happen and it only takes a couple bad eggs to have people saying "Oh we had a bst in our last pt and the exp was horrible!" I don't stereotype and I'm willing to pt with any job but if I'm not the pt leader then what I say usually has little influence with 5 other people saying the job sucks for pt'ing.
I remember my first real eye opener with bst. I was leveling whm and the ls I was in said they would help me get the af body. After a couple of weeks of waiting, asking, and eventually shouting for hours, I was about to give up. It was late and I resolved to level a different job tomorrow when a bst answered my shout. He was JP and though it was difficult to communicate at times, he got the point across that him and his bst buddy was going to get my af for me. I thought "oh ya this is a waste of my time" but figured I'd give it a shot. So off we went and they kicked that NM's a** and totally impressed me. I have never underestimated a bst since.

Please pardon the thread hijack.
I find that interesting. I do intend to take my whm to 75 and my bst to 75. Through coffer key hunting w/ a couple of friends over some time, my whm is nearing 57. I'd like that whm af body when I hit 58. What was your pt setup? 2 70+ bst and a you as healer? I've been told that particular shadow can REALLY suck....and since I don't have much online time to find help, this could be beneficial.
Thanks in advance.

To be perfectly honest, BST with pet was known to be a good DD since years ago, by those who were paying attention to parsers. Same goes for DRG (even before the two-handed weapon update).
Why the general player base do not know this, I've no idea. ._.

Yep just me on 60 whm and two 70+ bst's. Impressed the hell out of me! Good luck!

Yep, I really dislike the discrimination of those 2 jobs in particular because they can kick some major a**. I understand that drg got a bad rep after the tp nerf but when put in comparison to other melee, they hold their own quite well dispite it! Just more poor misinformation handed down through the FFXI "generations".
I've always considered all DD's pretty much the same unless I feel they might take some incidental damage (from agro or whatever) then I prefer any that are /nin, or ranged. I mean when you're looking at that list of lvl 53-55 players LFP there's no way for you to have any idea of what gear or skill they are going to bring, so you just pick at random or maybe take the 54 instead of the 55 because the 55 might level soon and cut xp or any other ways that have nothing specifically to do with the job.
I'm just glad BST is a good DD job that has the option to solo. I have no desire to sit around doing nothing while LFP (though lately I've been fishing or crafting instead of soloing).
At 75 I think that BST is a pretty expensive DD job. Even if you have 100 cooking skill and craft your own LDL or ChopC it's a lot of money.

What probably colors a lot of players perception with BST DD is when a pt BST shows up wearing his solo charm gear for doing a DD role. If a WAR, SAM, DRK, etc shows up wearing gimp DD gear, people just see it as a gimpy player.
To the list of amazing things that BSTs can do, you can add NIN AF3. I solo'ed it the other night. It was rather fun.
Edit: oh, btw, DPS is a non-FFXI term. Try "DD" for the role, and "DoT" as a damage type for more commonly accepted FFXI terminology :P

We can pretty much say this about every job really. Yet people will still suffer thru the common, that person is terrible, why a drk/brd at 60, whats with that terrible geasr for their job / wrong weapon.

Thats because players refuse to add the pets damage to the job. They fail at realizing bst+pet or Drg + wyv DPS or total damae. An just laugh cause the Drg did 40 damage and the Drk did 55. Yet his Wyvern just hit twice for 50 each..

Yep people tend to generalize. A job joins with poor gear, plays their job poorly, and the pt doesn't do well so then that job sucks, especially if it's a job you don't often party with (i.e. drg & bst). It's just like r/l unfortunately, people tend to compartmentalize races/religions/etc. But it is very reassuring to know we can talk about this and hopefully educate people because thats a big step in getting the word out and correcting the misiinformation.

Same reason PUP gets no love.
I've even been told as far as "eww PUP, its just a gimp MNK" from a PT leader when I suggested one on seek.
