View Full Version : 75 RDM non-/nin solo adventures?
I haven't played in quite a while but I'm thinking about coming back to do some casual stuff like lvling BST or playing around with my 75 RDM. I don't have much gil, I don't have very good gear, I have no merits atm, but I'd like to know if there are some fun things I can do solo at 75 without /NIN sub (mainly because I don't want to level it). I quit while I was trying to skill up defensive skills on Chigoes and died one too many times. I like a challenge but if doing anything but merit PT's is going to be pure pain just say so. I mainly want to have fun. ;)

You can gain experience pints and (Allied Notes) in Campaign Battles by yourself as RDM/anything. If that's too crowded, Sleep/Gravity/Bind + Nuke and/or DoT still works wonder for regular monsters and many NMs.
BLU is a refreshing change from RDM, so you may want to give that a try. (However, soloing on BLU seems to be strongly tied to /NIN.)

I would suggest /WHM for Campaign, just for access too RR :D
But, meh, theres loads of stuff you can solo still without /nin, and it depends on your definition of fun. The higher tier NM's (Sky, Sea especially) REQUIRE /nin.

If this was 3 weeks ago I'd probably say wait for Besieged, but Campaign Battles blow it out of the water, much more fun, less lag, and you don't get 3-shotted when you pull hate.
I usually go to Campaign as /DRK, it's a good amount of fun, you can easily solo the normal mobs as long as it's a 1v1 fight. The leader NMs are considerably harder though, the first time I did campaign I solo'd 2 Orc MNKs, but then got 1-shotted by the Warmachine's TP move when I pulled hate on it XD.
/BLU, /WAR, and /PLD are all pretty decent solo subs as well, and I like to play around with /RNG sometimes.
As far as doing the big-time DoT kite solos, Hong's kind of right on, unless you have Crimson Cuisses you're kind of stuck using /NIN.

Yeah, I go to Campaign /DRK as well, its pretty neat busting out 700 Vorpals on RDM with Souleater and LR :D But I go with a BLU/WHM and get them to Raise me when needed.
Otherwise, especially if theres not many people around, you could be laying dead for a little bit :D
Big time solo's I would recommend /NIN anyway with with CC's - 12% is nice but isnt a fight deciding factor most of the time, and even with the best possible solo's there will be at least a handful of times you need shadows to survive.
Unless you enjoy being 1shotted :D

Maybe I do!
Sure happens enough to make it seem that way.
Proto-Omega hits Callisto for 804 points of damage. :(

Worst was when I turned up to Campaign in Meri Mountains /DRK. I had just clicked on the NPC to get my Tags, when the Yag NM did his jumpy-spinny-footkick move and 1 shotted me before I had my Tags. Exp loss from R1 :(
But yeah, I remember times when Faust would catch me Typhoon with just 1 shadow or something, it would still rip SS apart and put be in lower yellow/red HP.
Is also nice not to have to eat every single Tier IV nuke, or whatever.

RDM/BLU you can solo many things. Phalanx+Cocoon+SS ftw

Iv never played or looked into /BLU.
Id imagine Cocoon is the main spell you would sub BLU for, are there any others?
Also, does Cocoon reduce magical damage also or just pure physical?
I just realised Im sort of hijacking this thread...

Just physical far as I know. Headbutt is a nice spell for a quick stun to stop those nasty ma's ^^

Cocoon is +50% defense. There's other stuff, but Cocoon is the main thing. Healing Breeze is efficient AoE heal, you can set Resist Sleep or a few Killer traits, Auto Regen, and you get access to Vorpal. It's a decent alternative to /drk that focuses more on endurance than speed. Where's that post I made awhile back on solo subs ...
Edit: Found it. Actually this turns out to be pretty topic relevant. We're already pretty good at surviving though. Pro/Shell 4, Phalanx, and Stoneskin in combination with debuffs are more than sufficient to tank most mobs up to EM. In cases where you don't need utsusemi to survive (most of the time, imo) the bonuses you named plus Drain and Aspir make kills go faster.
It breaks down like this as I see it. If you're fighting something that attacks multiple times a round, can drop stoneskin in 5 rounds or less, or is a beast or undead mob, sub blu. Else if you're fighting something that can drop stoneskin in 5 rounds or less, sub nin. Else if you're fighting something where mp conservation is a concern, sub blm. Else if you're fighting something with a drop rate you're concerned about, sub thf. Else if you're fighting something where kill speed is more important, sub drk. Else if mob's attack rate, attack speed and hit points aren't a concern, and drop rate and kill speed can't be improved, sub whatever you want.So for drk to be the best sub in a solo/melee situation, you'd have to be fighting something you wouldn't have any trouble surviving, but don't care about the drop rate either. Pretty niche. Some examples might be playing support/melee in PFC Mamool Ja assault, soloing/duoing Colibri for skill or limits, duo farming with a thf, or killing placeholders for an NM you're planning to call for help on anyway.

I know I linked this in another thread not long ago, but here's Avesta soloing Charybdis as RDM/BLU:

It's nice because of Cocoon, the ability to get different Job Traits, and the fact that it doesn't gimp MP pool as much as a non-magic subjob. Probably for other reasons as well.^^
Thanks for the replies. Most of it was over my head as I pretty much hit 75 and quit a few days later. Campaign is part of the new expansion, correct? It sounds like it might be fun. I was never really interested in NM's because I figure anything I can solo is probably camped and standing around waiting for spawns only to have someone else get it first is not my idea of a good time.

Here are a few more fun things to do solo or while helping others:
Prime Avatars
All Quests
Rank Missions
Coffer Key Hunts
Testament Hunts
I highly recommend purchasing a Mensur Epee. Also getting a Walahra Turban is worth while.
