in 2006, I was leveling Paladin level 21 (I think it was level 22 not sure lol) and I called my NPC out. I set her to Fierce attacker.
I used defence food such as boiled crab, and level 21 gear and Stamina rings.
and so I fight T-VT Land Worms. I had some trouble but it wasn't so bad lol
I used some refresh drinks too, orange juice. I always cure my npc (Amerita, Hume Female) when her health was about 60% and below. exp was kinda decent, using exp ring is awesome! although tanking as pld seems like a hard task in parties above lvl 30 but lvl 23 pld was far as I could go before lol
EDIT:
at levels 10+, do you guys be soloing T's with NPCs when searching parties?
I haven't (really) played in about a year and a half, but I used to solo with Kalokoko all the time. I always had her set to heal, though, except for when I was leveling her up in NPC/skillup/key alliances, when she would be attacker. Healing tends to work better for me, since they become easier to take care of, and the only real downside is that it makes Blessed Radiance harder to pull off. I personally wouldn't recommend fighting worms, they don't give you any freedom to move around, which can be very useful for avoiding aggro at times.
One of my favorite moments in leveling my NPC was definitely when I was in a party in Altepa, I had my NPC set to attacker from an alliance earlier, some DD left, I used my NPC until we could get a replacement, and we realized my NPC was doing more damage than the DD had been. We wound up using her until we disbanded.

LOL that is really cool! I never tried that in a party before
in 2006 around sept-oct I was leveling my NPC in altepa desert fighting beetles, I was
level 59 Red mage subbing BLM, my NPC was fierce attacker wielding Great Axe. it wasn't a problem at all ^__^ I love my npc.

I solo'd with my NPC most of the time since I was forced to become a casual player. They are great up to taking down level 70+ mobs. My NPC misses about 1/3 of the time on 70+ mobs and using a GK, you begin to really notice the lack of damage. Around that time I painfully switch my NPC from Fierce Attacker into a Soothing Healer.
Only reason I dont like using Soothing healer is because the NPC cure bombs you with a Cure IV when you are only down 200-250 hp. Two small spells later you get the "I am running out of mana" text.

My NPC uses a Great Axe,
When I come back (playing over from the VERY beginning lol) and do the npc quest to get the signal pearl, I might do some leveling with npc lol.
what other two-handed weapon should I give to my npc to use other than Great axe?

Well, I don't see many threads about NPC Fellows, so I thought I'd necro this one. Firstly, I got my very first NPC Fellow yesterday!
1. She is a "shield" type.
2. Even going through all options at randevous point, no option to change that. Suggestions?
3. I took her to Crawler's Nest to beat on bees while I farm them.
4. She kept voking and it took 300+mp/+convert/+refresh to keep her alive, then I caught aggro from 3X bees and died.
5. Is there a better way to start leveling the NPC?
6. Altepa with me as PL?
7. If I call her while a lv 17 BST, will my BST get any XP?
8. If you die will the NPC is called, does it hurt the fellowship +/-?
9. What is the most common use of the NPC Fellow?
Thanks! I hope to get some info from you guys.

5. Is there a better way to start leveling the NPC?
The best way to lvl them is fight monsters they would get 200 XP from (they start at lvl 30 if i remember right) So what I did was lvl'd them on things parties fight around lvl 30.
7. If I call her while a lv 17 BST, will my BST get any XP?
If you call you'r NPC on a job that is lower than the NPCs lvl the NPC will get lvl-capped to you'r lvl... BUT if you lvl up/down while your NPC is out he/she will not lvl to keep to you'r most current lvl.
9. What is the most common use of the NPC Fellow?
Depends on you'r play style I suppose. I use mine as soothing healer almost 100% of the time~

2) You don't have enough bond yet. Calling them at Rendezvous and selecting "Chat" only raises it by one, once per RL day. Using the pearl also raises it by one. You need five total to change to a new type.
5) Weaker mobs? She'll get XP from anything that would normally give a level 30 character XP. They also gain a trickle of XP the entire time they're alive after calling. So death is bad, better to play it safe.
6) Worked for me, way back when.
7) Yes. She'll be capped to your current level, and will never effect the XP you get yourself.
8) No.

Thank you both very much for the information. All of the resources I've read were a little complicated or vague...

It DOES affect you'r XP.
If you are soloing with a NPC(when you are at a lower lvl than you'r NPC) you will get the amount of XP a 2 person party would. If you are duoing it will treat you'r party as a 3 person party, and so on and soforth.

The NPC starts at lv 30. The only job I have close to 30 is WHM at 31. Can anyone suggest a place that a lv 31 WHM and lv 30 shield NPC can duo and survive while getting some exp?
Thanks

Personally, I would say try and play it safe until you can switch the NPC to a different type and see if you have an easier time that way. I always preferred to have Attacker for my WHM; it just seemed to go more easily.
Maybe Buburimu, the Dunes, Korroloka Tunnel. It'll be Easy Prey and Decent Challenge, so you might not get tons of XP, but at least you'll survive. Possibly Qufim?

Land Worms in Quifim Island are lvl 25-27. Id say Land Worms in KoKo tunnel but they are 20-25. Id check KoKO first because not to many parties there on my server. So it might be the best exp for the time duration on your NPC. Just make sure the lvl is fine.

This doesn't sound quite right. I've never read any info indicating that your NPC would affect the exp someone else in your pt gets.
From my understanding, when you have your NPC out, you take a direct 30% cut to the exp you earn. If you are not in a party, this can work to being slightly more than what you would get in a 2 man party. If you happen to be duo'ing with someone and call out your NPC, the 30% cut actually results in less exp than if it was calculated as a 3 man party.

In all honesty the point I was trying to make was the fact you'r xp is cut, the more people are in your party the less xp you get. Now what you have stated is just as helpful as my information because you don't have any numbers backing up you'r 30%. Just from you'r "understanding".
Edit: I would love to see some information to show direct XP percentages you'r NPC takes. I would do the tests myself but since I am not able to play right now due to my job, I can't. (At least for another 2 months)

It's a straight 30% cut (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Adventuring_Fellow_Guide#Fighting_with_your_Advent uring_Fellow), regardless of whether you're in a party or not. Second main bullet point in the linked section: "When you fight with your Adventuring Fellow you will receive a 30% reduction in your experience points. Your party will not experience any exp reduction."
So you take 30% off of whatever you'd normally get in a party anyway (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/XP#Experience_Points_from_killing_monsters).

Thanks that does clear that up.
(I cannot go to the linked site because most of the internet is blocked on the goverment computers I use while overseas.)

I would have linked wiki earlier, but like you mentioned, they wouldn't be based on my own numbers, and most people simply respond, "Wiki tends to be wrong on a lot of things."
I must make a note of this. It's apparently ok to spread misinformation as long as the point your trying to make holds to some degree. That must be why the myth was perpetuated for so long that a BST will reduce his party members' exp by having a charmed pet during the fight.
Edit: http://www.playonline.com/pcd/update/ff11us/20050715Pm01B1/detail.html
"A player fighting with an NPC fellow will receive only 70% of the usual experience points gained for solo battles."
