View Full Version : Whats in your character name?
Jarre
11-18-2007, 11:44 PM
I can't find anything in relation to this on 6 searches so here goes...
How did you come up with your ingame character name? does it have any meaning?
To start oiff I'll give my 2 characters names.
Jarre - well easy really named after the French electronic musician Jean Michel Jarre.
Brickshouse - During the 2nd world war, London got bombed very badly, most of the housing stock in the working class areas were the old small victorian terrace houses. each pair of hosues shared a toilet at the bottom of the garden. During the blitz the houses were destroyed, but surprisingly the little toilet at the bottom of the garden was the only thing remaining, untouched in alot of cases. These were built like houses out of brick. The term Brick-shit-house referes to these and is often used to describe "a very big person, normally male who is as broad as he is tall yet carries very little fat. Not the sort of person you would willingly upset." Hence the Uk slang term "he's built like a brick shit house" Merge that all together and remove the hit gives Brickshouse. Which the above description defines the Galka race perfectly.
So How did you come up with your characters name and what does it mean, over to you guys and gals.
Ellipses

I started out with Ampersand as my main on my previous account. There was an episode of MST3K where one of the characters in the movie was named something like "Atlasan," but the way it was pronounced, the bots kept calling him "Ampersand." That and I just like the way it sounds.
From there I started naming my mules after various punctuation and typographical symbols (Ellipses, Octothorp, Obelus). When I signed up for Allakhazam's forums, Ampersand was taken, so I went with Ellipses, then brought that over here. And since that's the name on here, I decided I might as well make that the main when I started my new account.

A lot of thought went into my main character's name, trying to get a certain feel and sound to it while staying true to certain implications from the backstory. The biggest consideration was to try to create a name that follows conventions for a moogle name (drawing heavily from the Woolsified renames used in Final Fantasy III [sic] as originally released in the US on SNES, since a good deal of my own RP background drew heavily from the setting), while still not sounding too out of place for a tarutaru (in defense of dropping the usual naming convention, she's only half-Windurstian, born in Mhaura and raised in Bastok, and the name does sound as though it could be a shortening of a traditional female tarutaru name, e.g. Kumeimei). I also wanted to choose something that would convey a sense of falseness and mystery about her origins, as well as the fact that deception is key to her way of life (she survived in Bastok as a pickpocket after fleeing an abusive adoptive parent, and her main job as adventurer is Thief). Jim Breen's WWWJDIC (http://www.csse.monash.edu/~jwb/wwwjdic.html) lists the word くうめい (kuumei) as meaning "empty name; false reputation" which I thought worked reasonably well with the intentions I had in naming the character (nothing that I found with a closer meaning met the other criteria). I dropped the elongated う (u) sound to better fit the naming conventions, leaving Kumei.
Most of my other characters I simply tried for a name that seemed relatively average (e.g. Koren, Myrna), though for my Mithra characters I tried to follow the established naming conventions and use sounds that seemed feline (Moh Ryahu, Nya Mohrreh). Koren in particular I was trying to achieve something both average and more or less Bastokan, since her family is Bastokan.
Star Wars name.
Been using it on the internet for probably a decade now.

Many are my names in many countries,
Mithrandir among the Elves,
Tharkûn to the Dwarves;
Olórin I was in my youth in the West that is forgotten,
In the south Incánus,
in the North Gandalf;
to the East I go not.
It was the first time I used this name online, my long-time online nickname just about everyplace else outside the FFXI world is "Scoopster".
Omniblast
11-19-2007, 10:49 AM
Back when Final Fantasy VII came out there was a Limit Break Attack called Omnislash.
Well since I didn't like meleeing, and after watching too many Dragon Ball Z Anime, and Vegeta's "Big Bang" attack, I wanted a more mage oriented attack.
Thus Omniblast was born sometime in 1994.
The first time I used that name in a mmorpg game, when internet gaming was at it's early stages in Asheron's Call. If you search up Asheron's Call and my name you may run across someone putting it in their background storyline for a Monarchy called The Mysterian Knights (sp?) It may still be up in some Microsoft or Turbine webpage somewhere.

I went through expaining how I came up with my name in another thread recently, and it's also covered in my journal, but I'll share it here too.
The name originally branched of from the character, Blue (yes, that was her name), from my favorite anime show, Wolf's Rain. However, Blue was already taken, so I had to be a little more creative. The mithra model I chose was 1B. I like the first hairstyle the most and decided to go with the second color because I liked the higher contrast. Light skin, dark hair, blue eyes. There is also someone I know who goes by the nickname Wolf Eyes, which probably had some influence in my character's name as well.
Also, this is kind of a small pet peeve, but it annoys me a little when people call me Blueeyes. There's no second "e" in my name and that was done intentionally. I prefer Blueyes or Blue for short. Blu is pushing it a little since it's also the abbreviation for Blue Mage and it can get confusing sometimes, even though it is one of my jobs.

Well I made this name up, and honestly it just came to me in the shower. I know, I'm weird. I wanted something that sounded like an RPG character name, something a little off-kilter and strange and unique, and also with a bit of Japanese flair to it.
After hearing how people pronounce it on Vent though, it seems my vision was not realized. lol.

Quite a bit, actually. Kamiel's name is full of puns, references, and hidden meanings.
To start with: Kami = in Japanese, a lowercase-g god. -el = in Judeo-Christian mythology, common name ending for angels (see Michael, Gabriel, etc.) and reference to uppercase-G God. Thus, the name reeks strongly of divinity, and conveniently also sounds San d'Orian (which is where he was born and raised).
Kamiel's mother, Annene (my mule, just a basic Taru-sounding name that intentionally sounds a little awkward in English if pronounced correctly), was taken in after Chanandit d'Leon (my NPC fellow) failed to protect his father, Garisa-Modisa (just a random Taru-style name) while fighting alongside him during the Crystal War. Thus, Kamiel's full name is... don't hurt me... Kamiel Leon. *ducks* The pun also happens to refer to how his true nature isn't obvious, as well as to one of the jobs associated with him (RDM, my first to 75). There's also the nice oblique reference to courage suggested in the surname Leon. -- Pteryx

My mithra (read: manthra)-- Slushy. Why Slushy? I assume you have tasted one. The sweet, sweet nectar of the gods next to Dr. Pepper.
Also because it's basically the name of one of my favorite genetically-created alien experimentations from when I was younger. I am, of course, talking about Lilo & Stitch. Hence the avatar.
So... yeah. That's why I called her (him) that. Represent~!

Rain sometimes symbolizes sadness and I named myself Rain because I've been through sadness and I've broken through to make myself better. The Blade part was added because "Rain" was always taken and I thought the word "Blade" sounded cool back then, but nowadays I dislike it in my name sometimes 'cause there are many people who have "Blade" in their name. I still use it since many people know me by the name of "Rainblade."

Eiyoko

Eiyoko - I still don't know, it came from "Eiko" I think. I've used it since forever.
Tsumimi (Mule I've deleted) - Auto-name feature gave me the idea
Vikoaa - Came up with it myself, I don't remember how on this one either.
Chocodilly - I made a chocobo food bazaar and asked my friend at school for a name. Now, the said friend did not play FFXI but still know a little about it, and she had a very goofy personality. So she came up with some joke names. One of them was a mix between "Chocobo" and "Picadilly" (which is a cafeteria). Thus, Chocodilly was born.

Deathrose = Name of an organization in one of my stories. Deathrose Clan.
Babooshka = I was bored, and wanted a funky russian name for my mule. Funny it was available.
Isoke = Name of my 2nd daughter....once I am old enough to raise kids >_> it was gonna be Azuka (leader of Deathrose Clan in my story), but it was taken.
Losrase
11-20-2007, 05:39 PM
I played a MUD called Dreamscape in 1995 and I had a character called Salishish Kel'shan. In that game you had to pick a name under certain criteria or your name will be rejected. You can create a last name after you decribe what your character looks like but as if someone saw you sleeping somewhere. After awhile I began to like the name Kelshan and use it for every game/MMORPG/MUD I played. I used it in this one but on a friends account (He was letting me get my first taste of FFXI). Well after a week of playing I decided to buy the game and have my own playonline ID. I deleted Kelshan from his account and try to name my main Kelshan. The server said the name was already taken and I couldnt use it. I waited for 3 days and the server still wouldnt let me use Kelshan. I decided to use a name I made up for a necromancer I had in Diablo two by the same name. Thus Losrase was created.

Dahlaine - character name taken from a David Eddings book. It's actually the name of a male character IIRC.
Arha (mule) - character name taken from The Earthsea books.
Yeah, I'm not very imaginative when it comes to names.
also /wave to Deathrose

Oh shoot... Well I'm not exactly sure, but I remember finding a "translator" of sorts, and my name is Renaldo. Broken down into Japanese, they don't have an "" sound, so that get's replaced with "ru".
Furthermore, in Hira and Kata, my name is broken down into syllables- Re Na Ru Do.
I'll try to find links..
P.S. How did you get your name in Japanese? I always wanted to see how mine is.
there are basically two ways to get a name in Japanese. the common way is to just put it in katakana, then there is also the less common way of translating the meaning of the name into Japanese.
I'm not sure what Alexius means, but in katakana it would probably be something close to A RE KU SU E A SU, although honestly I'm not even totally sure how it's pronounced in English.
Cyprian
11-24-2007, 12:41 PM
My name? umm... I found the name Cyprian while looking through some old medieval names, I liked it, I then developed an Elven character for a fantasy I'm writing. I then accidentally put it in m-w.com dictionary and the results?
Main Entry:cyp·ri·an
Function:noun Usage:often capitalized : prostitute (http://m-w.com/dictionary/prostitute)
Yes, my name means prostitute and then while looking through a list of phobias I found that cyprianophobia is fear of prostitutes. :D yay!
Satimasu
11-24-2007, 02:03 PM
I made up my name. Was just thinking of a name, I used a name I made up for a character on PSO (Phantasy Star Online) Satimas. Just added a "u" at the end. Apparently the first part of the name means many things from "pious one" to the names of goddess'. Masu just means a wooden box in Japanese. Little did I know making up a name like that would mean anything. That's probably why I get tells from JP's a lot...
DakAttack
11-24-2007, 02:23 PM
Dak is short, and to the point. It's both strong and flexible.
Dak was taken on Kujata, damn it, so I went with Anhedonia. It sounds cool, but it's actually an inability to experience pleasure from normally pleasurable life events such as eating, exercise, and social or sexual interaction. It doesn't apply to me, it just sounds cool.
My real name is Alexius (obvious as hell) (Alexios in Greek) but everyone has been calling me alexander so it's like a clarification. .heh.

My game name is TheMom. The story behind it is from way back in the old days of gaming. You didn't get a lot of spaces to use to save your game so I would just put in MOM. Well my son was young and we would play all the time and I would beat him a lot. lol Then his buddies would come over and see all my high scores and harass my son. One day I had a particularly good score in a game that amazed his one buddy and he looked at me and said "She's not mom, she's THEmom." It kinda stuck after that and I started doing my saves as TheMom when I could and it's been my name on the internet since back in the BBS days.

Telera
11-25-2007, 08:20 AM
Telera was the name of a character of mine from a very large 'sandbox' style RP set after Episode III of Star Wars and carrying on well toward the NJO. She was a girl identified with Jedi potential at a young age, and taken from her home world of Dathomir.
That's only the origin of the name. I tried to use it, and the backstory to some extent on SWG before it was face raped.
In FFXI, Tel's backstory was that she was a young Acolyte/healer in the service of Altana. Through a long, drawn out series of events covered in a RP linkshell I once had, she found a stone and heard the voice of Carbuncle. Following his directives, she began her journey to become a Summoner. A childhood friend/man she loved (my r/l boyfriend's char, naturally) was lost for a year or two on the journey, and was found by a third character in the RP shell. (Sev's char.) She returned to San d'Oria for a span of time to recover emotionally and spiritually before setting out on her own to defend her country.
We actually got the story pretty far, but Sev *glares* transferred servers and Valdir quit. Soooo... I don't RP anymore. No point. But that's about the jist of her backstory in a short, concise nutshell.
I've googled Telera and come up with a few spanish sites for some kind of bread or pastry, as well as some singers. So apparently it's Spanish, but I had no idea, I just made it up. Haha.
Caeryn is my Tarutaru. Another name I just threw together to the best of my knowledge. The character Ceryn is a young woman I play in a high-fantasy style RP, but to 'soften' it up a little for a Taru, I put an a in there. Caeryn is also the name of my Loremaster on Lord of the Rings: Online.
Aeria is a mithra, and just a mule until such time as I decide to (or not to) make her something. Aeria is the shortened form of Aeriana. Aeriana is a character from a long series of books I've been working on... Aeria is her daughter. :p So she was named after her. And since Aeria's personality is more like what I wanted the FFXI-Aeria's to be, I went with that.

I'm pretty sure Alexius would transliterate as アレクシアス(arekushiasu), seeing as Japanese phonetics don't really allow for the Ə = any vowel phenomenon... The version above would be a long u (oo) sound (except not long -- same pronunciation, just shorter).
Alexios would be アレクシオス.

The second site where I work has a PowerMac running System 7 just to talk to an AppleTalk only device. I really would like to make it go away.
I also have to come in one weekend to rebuild a file server that some moron decided should run netatalk. What kind of idiot uses AFP between a Linux file server and OS X clients?
AppleTalk and IPX/SPX were nice in the low administrative overhead to set them up, but were way to chatty.
