Ask questions that you would like answered by SE in this thread.

I know I know we have a whole forum section for that, but to sum things up, just ask your question here, no discussions are to be had please, let's keep it clean.

Remember, ASK a QUESTION, do not give SE suggestions or "is there a plan to do things the way I'd like them to be done?" type questions.

Thanks for the topic, but I honestly hate your examples. Let's PLEASE not waste our questions on WOTG content that we will discover a week or two after the event.

I think I have three I'd like to suggest:

1. What sorts of things are there that the development team is unable to do, such as new content, changes to the client, or otherwise, that they are not able to? What sorts of arguments have members of the development team had with each other about changes to FFXI?

2. We understand that you use the POL client as a content delivery system, and cannot use FFXI without it. Do you have any plans to bring more titles to PlayOnline in North America so that users here can also take advantage of the service and enjoy it for other games? Or any special plans for the client itself that would interest FFXI players?

3. Many of us remember when SE sent a representative to a popular FFXI forum to see what players thought about a situation. Many disliked the result, and they seem to have vanished afterwards. There seems to be no communication between most players and SE. Is SE pleased with it's distance from the community currently? Or do you want to improve that? In other MMOs, it is not uncommon for developers and GMs to discuss things on forums, or to show up in special in game events. I can only remember each of these things happening once-- the above mentioned situation, and a Halloween event a few years ago. While I realize it is more difficult for SE to do such things as no official forums exist, and events are normally only held near holidays, is this something you have considered or wish to do, or do you think it is a waste of time? Of course many GMs, and I'm sure developers as well, play FFXI and use forums in their private time simply because they enjoy it. Do you feel that this is adequate communication with the playerbase, even it we do not know we are being heard?

I'd also like to ask if they have any plans to make FFXI's client/server free (be it open source or just available), or make an offline version of FFXI, but I think FFXI has enough life in it that those questions can wait at least a few ffffs.

Is there an imbalance between monsters and players?

Players' abilities, especially those of melee damage dealers, have been steadily increased over the years. Some examples:

Two-handed weapons benefiting more from stats
Hasso
Haste/Accuracy gears
Three forms of external MP refresh, stackable
Armor with "Refresh" effect
Sushi (for substantial accuracy increase)
Various other gears
Merits
In contrasts, the monsters' performance have largely remain the same. Many players would even say the last expansion pack, Treasure of Aht Urghan, gave us monsters which are even weaker for the experience points received. (e.g. Imp with its low HP.) That, instead, has further lowered the effective difficulty of monsters, since players naturally gravitate to targets which give the best experience points per hour.

Does FFXI's development team agree that there is an imbalance between the players and the monsters, to the detriment of the game? If so, how does the team plan to address the problem?

Should "Skillchain + Magic Burst" style be encouraged in exp party?

Currently, there is trend for "TP spam" exp parties, where every front line fighter and physical ranged weapon user simply use his weapon skill (WS) individually instead of combining them to form skillchain (SC) to open opportunity for magic burst (MB).

This is so effective that the skillchain + magic burst system, which requires higher player skill and knowledge as well as party cooperation, is rarely used in pick-up groups anymore. While the game should allow for multiple ways of gaining experience points, it is a shame losing this aspect of cooperative play.

Will S-E encourage the return of skillchain and magic burst? If so, what kind of adjustments can we look forward to? Can the experience points per hour obtainable between "TP spam" and "SC+MB" play styles be made more even?

How does S-E measure FFXI's economy?

Since many players will always find something to complain about the economy, Square-Enix must employ more objective measurements of the health of the economy than player feedbacks when determining whether FFXI economy is in good health or not.

Would it be possible for S-E to provide some insights on which economic statics are gathered and how they are used? Also, would S-E mind releasing some of these info, such as charts of:

Inflation Rate (over 1 year period)
Per Capita Gil holding (over 1 year period)
Per Capita Net Worth (over 1 year period)
Monetary Velocity (over 1 year period)
Total Gil in circulation (over 1 year period)
Aggregated Auction House Merchandise Value (over 1 year period)In addition, I would like to request no economic data breakdown by World, in order to minimize the chance of spurring world migration requests by players and RMT's alike.

I got 3 (in order of preference), and I'll be blunt & to the point.

1 - Is the Mystic Knight job class from Final Fantasy V at all possible, or will there simply be higher level enspells for Red Mage?

2 - Are there any plans to change how defensive abilities such as Guard and Parry, along with armor types (e.g. full plate versus cloth)work to reduce and avoid taking damage?

3- What do you plan to do about the current state of crafting and the utter lack of profits to be made on anything other than a high quality synthesis? (and even then it's hard)

I have to agree that asking questions about the expansion that we'll see answers to in two weeks is a big waste of a rare opportunity. So...

* White Mage is supposed to be the premier healer in the game, according to you. However, Red Mage outshines it in XP and especially merit parties, the most common activity in the game. Do you plan to improve the white mage's ability to keep up with fast-moving parties in some way, aside from introducing a subjob that could just as easily be employed by RDM?

But if you really absolutely refuse to ask them real questions, then:

* In the Treasures of Aht Urghan story, the player character took many actions that demonstrated a level of gullibility and myopia that grated on some players, making them unable and unwilling to identify with their own character. Will the player character behave more intelligently in Wings of the Goddess and future expansion missions?

...that last one is what I'd like to know as far as fluff. -- Pteryx

Will AF1 +1 upgrades eventually be added to Limbus for Corsair, Blue Mage, Puppetmaster, Scholar and Dancer?

Are there any further revisions planned for Zilart endgame content such as sky and HNMs?

Windurst has been permitted by the Aht'Urghan Empire to observe the Astral Gate left behind by Alexander in the Nyzul Isle remnants, will we be learning of Windurst's and Shantotto's findings soon?

Will there be plans to improve the uniqueness and purpose of Thief as a main job? As such were having it main to use SATA out weighs or drastically improves performance compared to a two handed weapon job subbing THF for the same purpose?

With the coming of Wings, in the teasers/trailers there was new weapon skills shown for sword users such as PLD and RDM. Will these be open to all classes that can use sword or will all jobs get a unique, job related weapon skill from this expansion?

It was stated Dancer had been invisioned as a support job to heal as it DDs. What is planned for WHM in terms of party role should Dancer becomes drastically prefered to WHM?

Lastly, in the grand scheme of things, how often has the player community suprised you with the many feats done since the release of the game? If so, what were the most amazing you enjoyed hearing about?

Feba, to be honest, what their vision of RDM was at the time the game was first released does not match what they made it become once they realized that RDM invite rates were crap. If they saw RDM as actually being "adept at swordsmanship", then RDM would have been made capable of meleeing effectively in XP past 30 when the job was found useless past certain levels, not given Refresh so as to cement them into the back line.

At that point, it was clear that their vision for RDM wasn't so much the description in the instruction manual and in the Aurastery, but a buffer and debuffer who can also heal and nuke a bit on the side. The swords and daggers were now just a legacy bit -- nothing that could be used in a serious manner in XP or endgame, just something RDMs have because RDMs have always had them in FF games. They kept the "equipment enhancing spells" because hell, why not.

And now they're coming out with Scholar.

I have to wonder the answer to Donomni's and Yellow Mage's question myself -- at least, the part about what they see RDM's role as being in the new era. If there's a new magical generalist, then what does that leave us as far as a concept? Refresh whore that gets invited over a WHM for healing? -- Pteryx

Then I'll ask a question relating to this mini discusion.
Will the backline jobs(whm, smn, rdm & blm) ever see an option to become effective to DD through melee damage that would make them comparable to the average melee job, if the backline jobs was equipped with similar accuarcy, attack, str, dex to that of the average DD?

Pteryx
11-08-2007, 11:37 PM
Feba: The playerbase won't let RDM melee because RDM sucks at it in the long run; if they equip themselves to compensate for this weakness, they dilute their strengths. As for the Pink Mage issue, that's the result of TPburn-friendly camps a stone's throw away from the game's hub city. The playerbase only adapts to what the game gives them to find the most efficient solutions. The only way this will change is if SE changes what the most efficient solutions are. Therefore, I feel that the question of what SE's vision for RDM is, particularly with Scholar treading similar ground, is relevant. And whether or not a question is relevant is the only discussion that belongs in a thread such as this. -- Pteryx

Feba

SE has suggested a lot of times that we are playing at a much higher level than they were expecting.

Pteryx
11-08-2007, 11:59 PM
And who decides what 'sucks'? The playerbase.

Nice Stephen Colbert impression there, Feba. The playerbase doesn't "decide what sucks". The playerbase discovers what works well and what doesn't work as well and then demands only the best. The reality is there in the code. We don't make that, SE does. So for crying out loud, asking what SE's attempting to accomplish is a good question.

If you refuse to consider the theory part of theory vs. practice relevant, just ignore the answer if they ask the question. I'm quite certain that I'm not alone in feeling that it is relevant, considering that I wasn't the one who asked the question in the first place. If you continue to argue the point, I'll only have to conclude that you're only doing so for the perverse pleasure of pissing people off. The mods will pick the question or they won't; arguments for and against are presented. -- Pteryx

Feba
11-09-2007, 12:12 AM
Pteryx, the thing is, unless RDM is an amazing melee, players aren't going to use it for that. The playerbase doesn't like 'ok', it likes 'amazing'. This is why there is such discrimination amongst jobs, and why FFXI only has two tank jobs. There is nothing SE can do about this. Either some classes are going to be the best and the playerbase is going to use them, or the playerbase could decide to accept the mediocre and use whatever they want. This playerbase is not going to do the latter, unless you get a static party that will, in which case go knock yourself out.

Red Mage has always and will always be a job that has white magic and black magic, as well as sword skills, but isn't particularly good at any of them. Last I checked, it's been that way for two decades. Why would FFXI be any different? There is no argument for the question, you want to see it asked, but there is no good reason to do so. It's job purpose is VERY CLEAR. There's no reason to ask.

IfritnoItazura

We can infer from the drastic change to RDM that whatever S-E originally set out to do, it didn't come out right. It should be interesting question to put to S-E, asking what was the role the Devs originally envisioned for RDM at the start, then what did it eventually became as they added Refresh and other tweaks.

Biting on the lore with a death grip isn't nearly as interesting, Feba. I'm rather interested in the evolution of Devs' view on Red Mage.

I recall the comment being something about the juggling act that was a purely backline RDM, how, for it's rapid invites, nothing about the job is easy. That popularity does not make for a posh position. That's what YOU said. I'm still trying to find the quote.

I said RDMs didn't have it easy in the context of party performance. That's different from being a sourpuss about what your role is in PT when you are so demanded for PTs and have a high invite rate. There is a difference between juggling your duties in a PT and whining about them incessantly like your job is broken. The climate of the game changed, how your job functioned did not..

No one make RDMs main heal, period. RDMs let people tell them to main heal and they obey. RDM just happens to be its own worst enemy.

For someone who quit RDM because playing as others expected/demanded stressed you out, I'd expect you above all to understand.

I quit RDM because I had levelled it for a static and he day after we hit 60 that static blew up in my face - super buzzkill. I watched two good in-game friends tear each other apart and I lost my will to level it. All that work for my friends and it wasn't even a job I was interested in, I simply played it well and understood it. I tried to push it a little further, but at 65, my interest just fizzled. I'm simply not obligated to continue a job to 75 if my interest in it has ceased.

Additionally, I didn't like how BRD had already painted me into a corner at endgame, RDM would only serve to restrict me further. I wanted different roles and have since pursued them in COR, RNG and BST. Next on the list is Dancer and Scholar, possibly BLU and PUP as well. ToA/WotG jobs interest me in ways the others just don't.

Frilly AF?

With the recent success of the special task force on gil sellers and various cheating program users, is there any plans to go back and look at the older NM's and place a "fair" version of instances in WoTG?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the much needed Beastmaster update that you have implemented (thank you by the way,) is there any discussion of making it easier for players to solo overall, outside of the small signet boost?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the recent Welcome Back campaign success again are you planning to offer this just before every expansion?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Off topic: Hey everyone good to see some things never change >.<;. Nice try tho balfree =D

Question:

Does the Wings of the Goddess Expansion Pack will be availble to buy in Mexico at the realese date?

Lawlz no way they'll do that. You, me and the other 4 poeple in MX playing the game will have to import the old fashion way. :/

I just wish they would sell it via download. >_<

Edit >

Oops question:

When (exactly) are you planning on releasing the DX9 upgrade and what improvements can we expect from the change besides windowed mode?

In my opinion, these questions are worth considering:
* Have you considered making Linkshell ownership transferable? -LyonheartLakshmi (http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/ask-squareenix-questions/68887-have-you-considered-making-linkshell-ownership-transferrable.html)
* What do you think about making a Mog Warehouse system available to players? -Raydeus (http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/ask-squareenix-questions/66144-what-do-you-think-about-making-mog-warehouse-system-available-players.html)
* Will we ever be able to listen to shouts from inside our Mog House? -Raydeus (http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/ask-squareenix-questions/69054-moghouse-windowa-will-we-ever-able-listen-shouts-area-inside-mh.html)
* Does SE have plans to further PVP roles and interests? -wrongfeifong (http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/ask-squareenix-questions/68953-do-se-have-future-plan-further-pvp-roles-interests.html)

Regarding the RDM vision question: Too RDM-centric. Ok, you don't like the Pink mage role, and you're not allowed to melee in parties, I understand. Still, many PLDs are discontent with having to be a DD in merit parties, and SMNs are discontent about...everything about their job, as far as I know. If the question were rephrased to be general, I wouldn't mind it being asked. Otherwise, I don't see reason to waste one out of a limited number of questions on RDM when it's not the only job the players are pressuring to perform differently from what its arguable original purpose was.

Here's a couple more I thought of.

- In the wake of Treasures of Aht Urhgan with people having grown accustomed to easy, fast respawning enemies are there any plans to adjust the relative difficulty level, EXP value, or respawn times of enemies in the middle lands?

- Now that RMT is becoming less of a problem, are there any plans to increase drop rates in Dynamis or make it an instanced event such as Assault is?

- Are there any plans to tweak existing spells to more closely reflect the relative skill level of the caster? (Such as Sneak and Invisible, which are both completely random in duration regardless)

I think I remember in one of the 1Up interviews they said they wouldn't be changing Dynamis to an instanced zone like Assault. Something about "old way and new way" or something like that.

You know, I figured that was the problem with that question. But, my thinking behind it was "ask a vague question, get a vague answer."

So, while I'm fully aware other jobs are in similar situations (Summoner comes to mind, like you said), I wanted specifics. I know it was kind of selfish, and I apologize.

How would you rephrase the question?

I would like to note that I do not have any problems with RDM.

I don't know. Probably something along the lines of "Are there any jobs that players are using differently from your original vision of it?" or "What jobs are currently being used in ways you didn't expect?"

As a job, RDM is functioning as intended - its just that RDM's versatility has been dampered by the fact that Sanction has allowed players to favor weaker mobs for viable EXP per hour. There is no "problem" with RDM, its the trends that are influencing what RDM's role is.

If you don't like that role, you don't have to conform to it. Just don't expect your invite to be as healthy as a RDM's invites could be. RDMs back in RoZ and CoP days would throw a princess fit if they had to main heal, especially without being told that was their role in advance. And they were kind of in the right to do so because back then it was not a given that RDM main healed, it was something you asked them if they would be willing to do.

Now its just standard and expected without question because RDM have willingly given in to the tastey 10K+ EXP per hour they can get if they choose to main heal.

But take RDM to any RoZ or CoP IT++ mob camp and RDM plays just like it potentially can. If you want to enfeeble, nuke and Magic Burst, then you need to do what mage/tank/support generally and arrogantly tell melees to do when invites are rough:

Build your own PTs.

Well put BBQ. Its why i don't even bother to merit or make parties on RDM, because the DDs are nothing but princesses that throws fits these days when it comes to a non ToAU camp. Or even one ToAU area one wants to go 2 don't, then another ToAU area as compramise the rest won't do.

I find it more to be like WAR1 wants to go to X area but NIN1 doesn't have X staging point, so NIN2 suggests Y area but WAR1 doesn't have Y staging point.

That comes up too. Honestly, i don't see why people don't have the staging points. There's guides, maps, everything to look up. At the most, the longest one to get two would be Reef and Mamool Ja. Nyzle can help get the two mire based ones, and Mount Z is plain easy if you have escape. It just baffles me every time.

^^; I'm guilty of that one. Although the only staging point I need to get is the Dvucca Isle one, and I've been told that the way there is lined with Archaic Mirrors. Seeing as how those Mirrors are guarded by either mobs or NMs with True Sight/Sound, I'm not sure which, I'm not too eager to go die a bunch of times trying to get there.

Meh, I should really do it though, maybe I just need to grab some LS mates and go murderize the zone, I don't think the mobs would be that hard when faced with a party.

Actually, now that I think about it I don't have the Nyzule staging point, I need to get to work!

Dvucca is quite simple to get to actually.

It's Ilrusi Atol (the one I'm still missing ><) that's the real horror to reach.

The only Runic Portal that was even vaguely rough to get to was Ilrusi Atoll, and even then I managed it. True Sight mobs aren't that hard to avoid. You owe it to yourself and potential parties/assault groups to have every portal.

I got all five staging points when they first came out, and the sixth some considerable amount of time after it became available. Dvuuca Isle became considerably easy to get to when the Ruins of Al'Zadaal were opened way back when, so I consider myself unlucky in that department because I had to go the looooong way. I do count my blessing though, since I didn't have to deal with archaic mirror NMs or soulflayers when I got Ilrus Atoll. It's still possible, just not a good idea if you're not paying attention.

Ok, a few question I wouldn't mind anwsered:

1: Will the Vana'Diel Tribune be revived or will you make personal profiles on the POL website?

2: How was Naja as a child?

3: Who was AV and why was he imprisont? (On thing I've always wondered)

4: Why does people have to redo nation missions 2-5 to 5-2 when they change to another nation after having done those in one nation already?

5: Some crafting items only got a single use, do you plan to make multi use of certain crafting materials?

Sorry, you're about a month too late with these questions. Fan Festival was weeks ago.

Locking this topic for now until the next opportunity arises for us to ask questions directly.
