So I've been away from FFXI for a long time now. I have an urge to come back, but is it worth it? I'm not sure I have the time to dedicate to getting a character up to a decent level... Does it still take just as long?
What are some reasons I should come back?

During the CoP expansion, the EXP curve was lowered signifigantly and with the ToA expansion, its become much easier to level quickly since most parties favor targeting VT and T mobs instead of IT+++ like they did in the old days.
Additionally, there are EXP buffs from enchanted items like Empress Band, which you can buy with conquest points and also earn through a signet-like buff called Sanction at 50+ in ToA zones.
So, yes, it has become a little bit easier to level. And if you take up the current Return to Vana'diel campaign, in which you might be able to re-activate your characters (provided you didn't delete them), SE will award you an Anniversery ring, which gives you a very large EXP buff, though its use is limited and cannot be recharged.
