I did a search on this, but didn't find anything to help me out.
I definitely want to pursue the summoner/white mage route. Can someone compare this if I chose elvaan/tarutaru/hume? Yes yes, I know that tarutaru's are the best mages, but HOW inferior are the other two?

Elvaan:
Uber high HP considering Mage job ... Low MP ... Not too low though ^^
TaruTaru:
Uber high MP ... Low HP considering Mage class ... Not too low though
Hume:
Overall avarage ...
Btw, Elvaans look the coolest while summoning ^^;;;;;

LOL thanks for the insight :) I've been reading in a few places that elvaans will have higher MND (better for whm). Now, what stat does summoning work off of? Int or mnd (or if I'm completely off, let me know)? I figure I'll eventually get enough mp boosting equipment that I wouldn't worry about that too much, but if I'm gonna have both lower MP than a tarutaru (expected) AND lower major power (if summons use MND, wouldn't it be better?) then it's a little disheartening.

Hate to burst your bubble, but...
MND is magic defense. The only thing that effects magic damage is INT.
I used to believe that MND was for white magic damage, but I've recently seen imprters correcting that assuption.
So a white mage Elvaan wil be pretty crappy. :(
Still, they have excellent magic defense!

High MND + High target(you or your friend) VIT = High amount of healing, so the bubble still floating around, buddy.

Understood - and am grateful for the info, I figured that MND helped with healing magic, just makes sense. But, do summoners, depend more on MND or INT?

I'm /bumping this (since no one here seems to use the search button anyway) and because no one answered the question - look one post up

From what i understand is that a summoner is great combo to a white or red mage type.
BLM is not a popular choice and may change in the NA version.
WHM/SUM or SUM/WHM is good because of the increased amount of Mp. And when in a PT most will want you to use heals and or status effects and having the summons is a great addiition to PT for adding that extra damage or status effect.
Others would be summoner thief
when summons is attacking you can backstab and or gil steal.
I know a jp summoner/thief and he swears by it .
He lieks the fact of stealing gil.
Once i get more info i'll et you know

Didn't get a response in the other thread i posted this question in and noticed this thread shortly after posting there  so i guess i'll ask here...
My question was...how would a Ninja main, Summoner Subjob turn out? You think it would work ok or would i end up too weak? Beings i don't know how the game's setup...is it even possible? Thanks in advance.

Summoner/Thief only work if you are solo, or making money.
Whitemage/Summoner is only good for its high MP, and some minority benefit of Auto-Refresh, and some of the summon's ability. Sure, whitemage can summon up the summon, but that summon will most likely die in 1 hit, well, not mostlikely, but for sure, already tested it out.
Ninja/Summoner is bad. Ninja is not the job that base on MP, so if you sub summoner, you would likely to get like 150-200MP at lv60. And the summon level will be like 30, like state above, it would die in 1 hit from lv60 monster.

heh, kinda what i thought...figured i'd make sure though  Thanks
I don't know much about summoners. I didn't even know the summons could die!!! I just thought it went away when you run out of MP.
If a summons dies, how long until you can use it again? Or if its low on HP and you recall it, how long will it take to heal? Also, assuming I have all of the summons, if Carbuncle dies, can I immediately call out Ifrit, than when Ifrit dies, can I immediately call Shiva?
Are you saying that, a summoner would never be a good sub job? Thanks in advance for any possible info.

Guys no one has answered the man's question. Is the governing attribute of summoning MIND or INT?? Someone answer this before anything. Thanks in advance.

Here's a link to a stat calculator. I found it really useful. Hope it helps:

Sorry, I'd credit it to the person that developed it, but I can't remeber his name. He did a great job on it, though.

If I got this right Summon is a mail job only...
If you would use it as sub job there would be to weak right?
So if toure going to be a summoner you gotta have it as your main...
But Dark Knight looks so cool! :(
Anyway I can live with that...
I will just have to use dark knight until I can get my summons ya

Does anyone have an opinion on a Hume Summoner/Paladin. I'm thinking the defense would be kinda nice and being able to fight wouldn't be a bad thing. If there's a big downside to this though, let me know (but I'll probably play it anyway :-P)

SMN/PLD is such a bad combo. You dont need the str boost and the def boost. It gives unnesscary stat boosts. SMN/BLM works for 1-10 when lvling by yourself. SMN/WHM is the combo for the rest of the levels.
Square made the game hard for job combos by making fighters sub war and mages sub mages. It is simple as that. No other combo works well with summoner. Only whm.
Valerathon

Further to Nadyxes point on not needing the Str and Def boost (but particularly the Def boost), yes it's true Summoners have horrible Def, but if the party is doing its job properly, then you shouldn't need the Def stat. It's like that with all jobs: if the other members of your party are doing thier jobs correctly, then you shouldn't need more of the stat(s) that are not normally associated with your job.
Not that it (Sum/Pld, I mean) wouldn't be fun. If that's what you wanna role-play, then go for it. You don't need anyone's permission! I think that would make for a very interesting back-story for your character, in fact!

Yeah, I'll probably be forced into being a Summoner/White Mage unfortunately. It's not like the sub is the important part of the back story anyway lol. Plus that way I can start out as a White Mage and not have to level my sub til after 60. Sounds good to me.

Yeah, I was always planning on being a WHM, so I was really happy to see how my second fav job melded so nicely with my favorite job!

bard/smn is a bad combo because low mp and no point in subing smn with bard. Bard subs whm or rdm for helping in pt.
Bard/rdm is an excellant combo esp at high lvl. At high lvl bard you can use hp regean when ur bard is 50. Rdm is not just dont have curega.
Question: Wouldn't subbing whm sort of be bad because if you use White magic it would drain mp and your summon wouldn't be out for long?
Sheila

aside from curing all supporters should help in other support and status recovery spells. Leaving it all up to a WHM is impossible. Like Neridia said, you must have a feel for the game to know why.

ok nadyxes, you seem to knwo what you are talking abut so can i ask you something?
would a THF/NIN be any good and are there any good combos you can do with the 2?
if not what are some other possiableitys
thanks alot
also i was planning on being a elvan(i heard they were good figthers), if this is bad please tell em what i should do
alos lol, sorry to bother you so much but are THF's hard to lvl up in the earily stages of the game?
Nadyxes
05-27-2003, 05:34 AM
thf/nin is fine
elvvan is great for fighter, high str
and thf is hard to lvl up to lvl 15, after you are lvl 15 then its easy to lvl
Sheila
05-27-2003, 07:17 AM
nady have you even played with a thf/nin? Even Seishi complained about it. One use for thf/nin is to skill up two weapons at once, but with huge delay.

I'm pretty sure you can't have the SMN job and the Beastmaster one because it would give you a message window saying your only allowed to have 1 pet. I might be wrong though.
Nadyxes
06-03-2003, 08:03 AM
ONly one pet allowed in game, so if u drg and sub smn can only have one pet ......a pet = bst pet, smn, or drg
THey will give you error msg

LOL - I haven't posted in a long time (between finishing up grad finals and needing a vacation from the computer) and STILL no one asnwered my girl question
MND or INT? Which stat is more important to summoners?
Valerathon
06-12-2003, 08:51 PM
Nice to see you back, Deedlit. Hope you had a nice "vacation" and good finals.
Um... I guess in answer to your question, I'm thinking that in as much as INT affects your character's actual MP, that would be the most important stat. As I understand it, it's all about the MP consumption for SMN. The more you have, the more your summons last, and stay around for the battle, blah blah...
SAIJAN ProDG
06-13-2003, 12:31 AM
how would you go about improving the best stat for a summon (INT right?), do you level up like usual or is it more of a thing where you have to do something in particular and do something or whatever?
Valerathon
06-13-2003, 08:33 AM
Well, leveling up your summoner gives each of the summons your summoner has new skillz (to pay da billz... gawd, I've gotta stop doing that). Increasing INT is only going to help if INT is used to directly calculate MP, which I suspect it's not. I think it's dependant on what race you are, meaning INT and MND are just "play stats" (I'm pretty sure Shiela said that). So, there's equipment that boosts your MP. I guess that would be important for a SMN to have. Also, you know about the MP boost ability that SMNs have.
I'm pretty sure I read before that neither MND or INT affect the Summon ability. Have you noticed that SUM get a CHA boost? Maybe CHA affects the Summon power (just a guess since nobody who actually knows is answering...)
Sheila
06-15-2003, 07:39 AM
chr can't possibly affect summon power, only level does.
Everyone's summon is doing same fixed damage for abilities..
So does that mean INT and MND don't affect it either? And do you know why SMN get a CHA boost in the first place? Thanks.

I thnk they get CHA boost because like half the summons they get have a healing ability.

But if the effects of the summons' abilities is fixed...
then it's fixed... that's that...

For those who are summoners already in game. Can you use summons to attack enemies like previous games? Like for instance Ifrit would have a special fire attack to use on enemies? And Shiva would do a Ice attack? Am I right?
Is summoner a worth while job to get? Does everyone who is Summoner with White Mage sub like what they are doing? I saw a few people in these forums who either beta or inported game since they had levels in game already?
Please let me know the feel of the summoner job? Are summons powerful like when you have to fight them or are they weaker while attacking enemies?
A lot of people were saying you just get abilities from summons and they are not like previous games? Is it true?

I must disagree with nad on the question of summoner as a subjob.
In level up PT's I use summoner for the mp boosts and carbuncles ruby shield for magic defense up.
I also am a red mage not the standard by far.
there is no reason to only play a summoner /whm
In level up Pt i have seen war/whm combos ,
darknight/thief combos.
Its all about the player and so forth and their understanding of their character.
As a remage my mp pool is OK ,not great and with summoner rdm My mp pool is grande.
I even bring out my summons from time to time to help with some damage.
So what it cant kill the monster but the added damage is killing it faster .
SO in closing i see no reasom for you to become a cookie cutter summoner or any other combo.

I've got one question, how do you get the summoner job. Where do you obtain the quest to get it? I've looked at hundreds of different FFXI sites and still can't find out how to get the summoner job!
oh and INT means how much magic damage you cause and/or how much you heal and MND means your magic defense is and it also affects how long power-up effects last

if summoners get a cha boost, then there is a reason. there is always a reason.

Shiela was convinced it was a "play stat", and that it had no effect as the game is now.
