View Full Version : Will there ever be a 'drop timer' in high traffic areas?

Will there ever be a timer of sorts (Be it 20 minutes, or an hour even) that will either disconnect or relocate players who idle in mass infront of mog houses, auction houses, or the like (After giving them several warning messages)?
(I just want to specify that I know there is a auto-disconnect function within PlayOnline, but most players have it disabled as it is.)

Nope the only way to due that is the pol one you noted that exists, they won't add one city (white gate for now) will always be laggy. Best way to deal is set hp in home nation and warp to whitegate when you have too.
Oh ho, a fellow beta tester! Trigara, I thought you were with Mithra Pride (Didn't think you were in PhoenixDown)
Are Ryane and Emily there still?
As "not a bad idea" as this is, there are times when somebody could be standing some place idle for 20 min and be a legit reason.
I know I find it very annoying when I zone out of the Mog House in certain zones and there are 50 people just standing there. Some of which I know haven't moved in several hours. Whitegate is bad enough with it's lag, but as soon as you zone out of the Mog House you have to load 50 people who are only taking up space and bandwidth. I wouldn't mind having them deposited in their Mog House so they wouldn't be in the damn way. But it's hard to determine when somebody is truly inactive.
I know I've had times where I've logged in and then immediately went AFK for 5 hours (lol), but at least I stay in my Mog House so I'm not out slowing anybody down. Then other times I "/shout surf" - trying to find a skill up, or a mission, or WSNM fight, etc; I'd hate to be logged out as I sit there in silence trying to find something to do, or somebody to help. Just becomes difficult to determine who's dead weight, and who's just standing there looking for something to do.

another problem in doing this is many people will leave themself logged in to try to sell things out of their bazzarr(i've done this for 15 straight hours about 9 months ago). Remember just because they are not moving doesn't mean they are not trying to do something.

DR2D2 brings a good point.
I'd say this would really only prove helpful if the PC was within a certain distance from the MH exit (I.E. where you pop after exiting your MH in whitegate) for a time of 40-60+ minutes.
Also auto-disconnecting them would be aggravating for people who have that setting turned off. Maybe placing them into the MH like tdh said would be better.

A better method would be to increase auction slots from 7 to 100 and just wiping out history altogether and instead of guessing the sell price, it will be the highest bidder wins the item.
That, imo, would remove the need for bazaars AND reduce lag for everyone.

Part of the allure to the Bazaar system is we get around the Bazaar tax, so that defeats the purpose. We're not talking about people out in Rolanberry Fields, we're talking about outside the MH when you zone out and your PS2 starts farting because it's loading 50 people who aren't doing anything but taking up space.

There are still quite a number of things that can't be sold at the AH, so not only would the number of items need to be drastically raised, items would need to be changed so they can be uploaded to the AH.

There would still be a need for bazaars. I've got some stuff that sells very infrequently. A couple of them are HQ cursed gear, so that's a very very big fee I have to pay every 3 days if I were forced to use the AH and not bazaar.
Besides, anyone who's serious about bazaaring does it just outside Jeuno anyway. Do we really care about the lag out in Rolanberry or Battalia?

You have a point, but then no one bazaars outside of the 3 starting points and it's impossible in ToAU (Well it might be possible, but it already lags for me as is)

Starter zones aren't crowded enough to lag significantly to worry over.
For Jeuno, Whitegate, and Al Zahbi, S-E can have "City Patrol" NPCs roaming around (like Goblin Bounty Hunters), and poke at AFK'ers for loitering. XD D
Unlike the Goblins, though, City Patrol won't KO the players, but instead just warp the loitering folks into the Mog House after three warnings. People who are already KO'ed will lose exp, but that's a small price to pay for Mog House exits uncluttered with dead bodies.

Interesting; Ifirit had/has linkshells with those names as well.

Ever since I moved to Odin I can't log out, talk to an NPC or try to zone into The Pit without the game locking up or crashing periodically. I pretty much have to go to Windurst of I want to log out now. They actually have mules set up next to the warp taru because crashing on the IS NPC is probably far too common.
Really, if you in Whitegate to bazaar you need to be shot in the face several times because not only is no one going to buy from you, even if they did, they'd ask you to come outside to get around the tax. I can't think of one mule I've ever made a purchase off of in Whitegate. Most bazaars are outside of a zone in Jeuno, it varies by server, but never fails and I always check out those bazaars if I need anything.
SE really needs to consider this issue soon, just because the problem might leave whitegate doesn't mean it won't persist in the Great War Era of Jeuno, for example.

I too would like to see something done about this. It is not a good thing when you get d/c'd coming out of your MH in Whitegate... @_@

Indeed. The lag in Whitegate is becoming intolerable. I've taken to hanging out in lower traffic areas like the Tavnazian Safehold just to avoid the 2 minute lag time for my gear to load...

Generally speaking, if I go AFK, - i.e. seeking with my /tell "ding" up - I do it in my MH. The only bazaaring I do is with my mule in Windurst. All other times, I try to stand my character someplace where no one goes for long periods of time, like over in the area of Whitegate closer to Imperial Whitegate. I also have my HP at the actual HP crystal in Whitegate instead of at the MH because sometimes it takes me ten minutes just to get out of the mob of people standing there.
It used to be a big problem in Lower Jeuno at the MH but it's moved to Whitegate. It sucks, but if I were to get d/c'ed for just standing idle I'd be pretty angry. I have auto d/c off for a reason.
Now, in Besieged, that's another story. Anyone who is AFK in Besieged should be warped out of Al Zhabi, preferably somewhere dangerous like the Jnun pond in Caedarva Mire. XD

I'm starting to agree with the notion of employing a Warp Taru in Tavnazian Safehold/Jeuno/Kazham/Norg/Rabao/Nashmau just for this reason.
Seeing as your mog locker now is accessable with nomad moogles, there's almost no reason to not allow these areas to become more functional to alleviate the lag in Whitegate.

Regardless of what teleportation/warp services SE adds to connect the major cities, I think players are still going to gravitate to one particular zone, the main reason being that current seek party / search for member function isn't terribly robust.
If you're the kind of player who does pretty much everything either with a static or with people in your LS, the limitations of the LFG system probably doesn't impact you a whole lot. But speaking as someone who hasn't had an aweful lot of help either from past LSs or even from people on my friend list, I can say that hanging around in a crowded zone looking at /shouts is the best chance I have at accomplishing certain missions, assaults, BCNMs, etc.
For instance, today I was able to knock out ZM5 because I teleported over to Whitegate and watched the /shouts going on. I have so many different missions lines and side activities I want to participate in that the current search comment system just isn't sufficient. And even if I had made use of my search comment and put my flag up as red (for missions), there is no guarantee that people attempting to put together a party for a mission to find me through /search.
If SE can overhaul the seek / search system to be more robust along with adding all of these teleport services, then I think we'd see more players dispersing to less crowded cities.

Well maybe this isn't a great option, but maybe they could have a feature - that you could turn on or off, mind you - so that you can look at shouts from your MH. You'd be contributing a lot less to the lag by being in your own little part of the server, and you'd still be able to listen out for anything that interests you.

If it were just about people cramming into a zone to shout for missions, we wouldn't be talking about this. This is about people cramming into one zone to idle for no good reason. There aren't enough people shouting for that stuff to even begin to lag the zone.

The member search function used to work, and it was actually pretty good, but SE went and broke it for no good reason, and now you have the product they made today. Why they ever did that, I'll never know.
I'm with Icemage on this one. I've been hanging out in Tavnazia/Lumoria a lot lately, and it's rather nice to have Jeuno access in a place not a lot of people go (or can get to); that, and my music mod of the track there is really nice.
I also enjoy having my HP set at the Bastok Markets MH. That gives me a quick run to the OP system, and I can simply turn around and go out to Port for a quick trip to WG. Quite possibly the best HP in the game.
