I see I got flamed. the Reason I asked is because I like the Race and I am Religous and I found this. And was wondering if thats why they named the Mithra what they did cause IF it is I won't play it.
Heres What I found and why I am Asking this question.
"Mithra" is a term that Square Enix ironically opted to apply to an all-female playable race. The reason why it is so ironic is because the word "Mithra" is actually the name of a male/female god, Mithras, who belongs to a monotheistic cult that was contemporary with early Christian religions.
Not only this, but when one compares Christian religions to the Mithran cult, one learns that Mithranism far exceeds Christianity when it comes to being a patriarchal religion!
Note: "Patriarchal" means that the religion focuses predominately on male worshipers, and only permits male leadership.
Heres this Info. link

Now heres the "mithra religon"

The reason you got "flamed" is because you posted a stupid question, your question got flamed and answered.
NOW if you had posted your last post in your first POST, things would have been ALOT different.

The mithran race isn't female only, it's just that you can only play as females. The males are rarely born and must remain in their homeland to reproduce or something.
Also, welcome to FFXIO. Don't let the nazi squad chase you away.

So you guys don't think the whole mithraism has anything to do with the SE Mithra?

Most likly not, Read though my post, and that's most likely where it came from.
Square likes to pull from deities. not religions.

SE also plays fast and loose with the deities they do borrow. The likelihood of SE choosing the Mithra name because of the religion behind it is about the same as winning Lotto Texas I think.
Besides, even if they did, don't get your knickers in a twist - it's just a game after all.

the reason I ask the question is has anyone else noticed that while the mithra is healing they are praying? (noting wrong with that) the Mithraism belives in paganism and I dont thats the point I'm trying to get accross hince the reason for the question

Has anyone noticed that while Mithra are sitting they're really really cute?
>_> <_<
SE saw this, liked the name and was like, hmm...Mithra...that sounds good, okay our cat-girl fetish is now named Mithra. That's what I think at least. When I heal on my Elvaan I pray with one hand, cause I'm talented like that. And Elvaan, as far as the game is concerned, are far more religious than Mithra are. So I really believe they just chose it as something they saw through random deity research, and liked the name.

Sorry to say this but it requires Mhurron's skill to make this kinda posts without sounding like an angry person who forgot their happy-happy medication for the day.
And seriously, the tone of the forums has changed a lot in the last months. I mean, there are hundreds of ways of replying to a thread (regardless of how annoying it can be to some posters) without flaming.
Now, if it was a rude or childish poster with an attitude I could understand it, but going for jugular at the very beginning of a thread that wasn't offensive at all is way too much.
Edit > Oh and on-topic, I never checked the Mithra description before. I used to think that maybe Manthra were opressed, but maybe they will come out as a bunch of very wise (tribal leader like) kinda characters who simply live quiet lives and choose not to fight while the crazy women of the tribe do the hunting, kinda like Lions. =P
It would be interesting to see either way. ^^)b
When I heal on my Elvaan I play with one hand,

Relax, it's a game. It's possible that SE was trawling through mythologies, found a name they liked and Hijacked it for a race name, that's all that's possibly going on here.
Playing a mithra wouldn't suggest to any but the most unbalanced conspiracy theorist or hysterical religious nut that you were the advocate of an extremely obscure religion that most people haven't heard of and certainly don't care about.
On an unrelated side note, my hume does 'the Bruce Forsythe pose' when she's resting.
Feba your first post was way too harsh but I laughed so hard ><

Now someone explain Galka and Tarutaru
Go!
Tarutaru came from Tartar sauce.
SE said it in an interview a bit back.
Galka... (this is where I make something up) is Cherokee for "Disproportionate and enjoys wearing disgusting subligar"

Moved to General Discussion. This isn't an appropriate question for Ask Square-Enix Questions forum (it's not meant to be taken "that" literally :P ).

..... religion? religion?! This is a game....... religion does not belong here, you say you don't want to play race just because you are "religious"
god....... -.- this is why I stopped going to church and gave up on any religion period... they all SUCK (but Buddhism is ok)
Its a game, next thing you will say you wont play Elvaan because they worship Altana.........
but to answer that silly question... if you had serached and read..... Mithra believe in good old mother earth, in this game
Buddhism isn't a religion really. It's more a philosophy than it is anything else.
Anyway, goddamn, this goes beyond "learn to take a joke" and into "stop bitching about everything that mentions a race."

You may have your own beliefs to hold up but FFXI is a game, just like an other, you can't really relate it to the real world because either you will go insane or just waste the oppurtunity to play a decent game. They could get their inspiration for names, races or items from anything but it's just inspiration, it doesn't mean they support it or like it. I wouldn't worry about it.
Play the game, if you don't like: don't play it. Don't give up on it already because of a name, it's a game, for fun! So have fun playing it. :P

Mithranism is some religion I've never really bothered looking into.
In FFXI, the Elvaan and most races believe in the Goddess Altana, but the Mithra believe the earth itself is the Goddess.
Most of the religious nature FFXI potrays is a reflection of religions. If you really wanted to take it seriously, The Sandorian Cathedral is the Catholic Church and I guess the Tavnazian Cathedral would have been more like Protestant. Its essentially the same faith, but just like Christianity, slightly different views.
The Tarutaru do also do seem to believe in Altana, but believe the prayers of the world are sent to the heavens and Altana through the Great Tree and the Star Sybil.
The Mithra usually reflect tribal cultures, they believe the earth is sacred and take whats done to the earth rather seriously.
And then there's the non-religious part of FFXI - Bastok. You could say Bastok is the reflection of the US/Japan in modern times. There is little talk of religon in Bastok, just a neglected statue of the Goddess. Faith is a much more private matter there.
Anyway, to make decisions on what you play/read/watch based on your religon is letting religion - not faith - rule you. There is a difference. Faith is a belief you hold in your heart, religon is doing something just because it was told to you by some guy behind a pulpit or something you read on paper.
I was raised in a Baptist church, some in that circle of Christianity view dancing as as this bad/sinful thing. I'll agree that it can be taken to uneccessary sexual extremes, but I've come to see it as a great social activity in which you get to meet people. Not all of us lose control of what goes on down below just because we're much closer to a woman than usual.
I'm surprised that in all this hub-bub no one ever said "Whar did SE evar say dat Taruz came frum Tartar sauce?" Everyone read that apparently.

Firstly, someone came in with a legitimate question of the origin of the Mithra name. As someone with more than a passing interest in etymology, this interested me as well. Indeed, it does originate from pre-Christian times to a religious deity, but this means as much as 'Shiva' or 'Ifrit'. There is no deeper meaning or symbology than using a cool sounding name with historical overtones. Don't write too much into it.
That said, I'm very disappointed in every contribution to this thread. Please refrain from responding unless you can enhance the content of a thread. Just chill.
