View Full Version : Returning player seeking advice

Hey all,

I used to play FFXI back when it launched in North America, I imported a copy all the way to the UK on launch day. The game was fun at the time; I played on Diabolos, unlocked multiple advanced jobs, and played a ranger to late 30's, but several factors lead to me leaving, most notably the time zone difference (which was a big issue back then), problems getting groups, and the release of WoW. I played that since it's NA release right up till a few months ago and after trying various other MMO's I finally wanted to give FFXI another go.

Last week I ordered a fresh copy of the game, as I'd foolishly thrown away my old box set a while back, loosing my POL ID, and I'm looking for a little advice or a few suggestions for which server would be a good choice. I've read through many of the server forums, both here and at the ffxiclopedia forums, but I'm still a little unsure of which to join.

As I already stated, I'm in the UK so I'm ideally looking for a server with a decent EU / UK population and perhaps even a friendly LS who would be willing to take a returning player in. Obviously I'd be starting afresh so wouldn't be looking for anything endgame for quite a while, if at all; I play MMOs to enjoy myself and help others, not to run around proclaiming that I'm better than everyone else (something which was sadly rampant in WoW).

If anyone has any questions, I'd gladly answer them.
Thanks for reading and all the best,
Neko

Hey welcome back! I just started FFXI today, and yeah the time zone thing sucks. From what I have seen it looks like my server is mostly Japanese...

Wow, quick replies!

Edelweiss, which server are you on?

Phoenix and Ifrit seem to be the main 2 I'm hearing have the best EU population, I'd love to hear from anyone else who felt like making a recommendation though. Although there's a transfer service available now, I'd prefer not to start somewhere and find I have to move!

Thanks,
Neko

Hey welcome back! I just started FFXI today, and yeah the time zone thing sucks. From what I have seen it looks like my server is mostly Japanese...Most servers have a good Japanese/North American mix. A little less european players, but I know there are some pockets here and there.

Depending on the time of day you play, however, you will likely encounter more of one kind than the other.

I am on Bahamut server, not that many UK people are on it, I would recommend Phoenix though, I have heart there are alot of people in UK that play on that server.

Actually, Bahamut has one of the few really successful endgame European linkshells. Not much in the way of newbie/mid-game linkshells for EU tho. :(

On Phoenix, people aren't very helpful at all. At least, not unless you've bent over backwards to be accepted into their linkshell. And even then, if it doesn't help them...

Bitter? Nah. But, Phoenix is a very closed community. At least during NA prime time.

Thanks again to everyone who's chipped in some advice =^.^=

I'd be open to joining an NA LS too, I just really want to avoid joining a server, getting to level 10+ and suddenly finding no groups anywhere. When playing WoW I was raiding on EST time (we started at midnight GMT and sometimes didn't finish until 6-7am), so my playtime is quite flexible if needs be.

Thanks again,
Neko

Yeah I get what you are saying now, it sucks when you are in a linkshell or you are looking for a party, and everyone that speaks your language are not on because of the time difference, that can be a bitch. It will probly be like that somtimes, I am guessing all MMOs are like that, you just got to find the people that are on the same time you are on is all.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply
I ended up staring on Ifrit and so far it seems like I made a good choice, lots of English speakers and many helpful & polite people.

To anyone from Ifrit, I look forward to seeing you in game!

All the best,
Neko
