The population has hovered around 500k for the past two years, though, so it's hardly dying. (In 2006, that figure is enough to make FFXI the 4th largest MMO with monthly subscription on this planet, I think.)

As for which World ("server"), just pick one. If you have real-life friends on one, that would be a great reason to go there. If not, pick a name you like, or see if anyone wants to offer a new player a Linkpearl (membership to a Linkshell--called "guild" in other games).

Having a Linkshell community join is a nice way to start, though most people do not stay with their first LS. Exploring the game on your own isn't bad, either, since it makes each new discovery that much more precious.

There is no official data on which World has the most population, to my knowledge. "Ifrit" is nice enough of one, though I can't say how it compares with others--never been elsewhere.

I say overrated because when people I know talk about ffxi it's usually about Bahamut.

As was stated already, join a server that you either have friends in or are being offered friendship.

If this was to me lol I'm currently logged into bg website lol. And mainly alot of people who were not going to be accepted by bg were rumored to transfer over to be on the same server lol.

You know, some Guilds/clans/linkies are known for one thing and one thing only and become famous/infamous for it.

From my experiences, with great fame comes great elitist assholerly.

Does seem to stem most from WoW and CS though. Good thing FFXI is more mature.

Basically the first ls to kill alot of the newer HNM also have good ideas/strats for the fights. And the site basically has the top tier end game ls discuss ideas for events/mobs/etc. Its basically where endgame babies come from.

Blue Gartr had some big name kills in the past, I think they were one of (if not the) first NA LS to take down Kirin, but this was so long ago it's hard to remember things.

Both, I think. They actually do get to new content earlier than a lot of other people (for what that's worth), but some are offended by the attitude they have.

A lot of endgame LS confuse skill with the ability to stay on all the time waiting for something to pop (and/or claim it when it does pop - which I guess is skill of a sort, except if you're using a bot, which according to rumor, most endgame LS do). People who can do that have better gear so everything is easier for them, but it doesn't necessarily make them more skilled. (Also, people who have more time to play can easily max their merits while still maintaining a heavy endgame-content schedule, which is much more difficult for players with limited time.)

Sometimes it is. Not always, unfortunately. With the increasing popularity of PLing and easymode merits, the maturity and skill level seems to have declined in the last couple of years.

Well, it's important to understand the distinction between BG the LS, and BG the forums. The LS is ok. It's really just another endgame LS at this point. No better or worse than most of the other ones you see out there.

The forums on the other hand are where item discoveries, strategies, etc. are being discovered and discussed. And while some members of the actual BG LS are contributing to those things, there are a lot of people from other servers who are as well.
