View Full Version : What system do you play or plan on playing FFXI on?

Another attempt to know you all.
I was a PC player. But I plan on going to Xbox 360 in a while. Especially because of the QWERTY keyboard that's being developed that slides right into the jack between the handles of the controller.
I would hate to leave my 360 that long for FFXI. Everytime I play 360, even for less than an hour, it warms my room up like a good lil' heater...

PC since I started playing, and never want to use PS2. :x

PC.
If I had a 360, I might dual box that way. Maybe. But not with some tiny slide-out keyboard. That doesn't sound fun at all.

I would send you a picture of the keyboard, but I don't have the privileges yet. It's a great keyboard. It's not a slideout, though. It's just a peripheral you plug into your controller in that headset slot. The picture of it is small, and although I have big hands, I'm sure I could get used to it. As long as it's QWERTY, I won't be too upset. At least it's better than juggling two separate controllers.

I play on PC. Would've played on PS2 but couldn't justify the costs of the HDD and network adapter.

I play on the 360 and PC. The 360 is more ergonomical for me because of the long wireless range I can sit on a chair/couch and play in greater confort than my desk chair.
I too am looking forward to the qwerty thumbboard add-on :)
The keys are back-lit too, so I can also play in the dark. (my usb keyboard is also back-lit, but it's wired and thus has limited range.)

Yeah, that's the one I'm taking about. It looks great. But I wish they would hurry up and release it. It can't be that hard to make. By the way, how are the controls for the 360 version?
Also, the wireless part is great for me. I've got this 36 inch HDTV and my chair is set back about 10 or 11 feet.

Kind of interesting, but I can't imagine that keyboard would be very comfortable to use. Still, you never know. I'm so used to my desktop keyboard, that anything not like that seems unusual.

I started on PS2, then had to move to PC when my 2 year old consecutively busted by PS2 and my POL install disc for it. Can't get new CDs without buying a new PS2 HDD, which is the one part I have that works fine, so I just spent the 20 bucks for the Vana'diel collection for my then 5 year old PC.
Now I've got a pretty nice current PC that can run the game at 1680x1050 with full settings and I don't think I could go back to a console anymore. ^^
... that's an interesting looking controller/keyboard combo...
But I think I'll just plug a usb keyboard if I ever play FFXI on 360 : /

I am currently on 360, and I use a USB keyboard for controlling it. I may change that once the keyboard attachment is released.

I have all three platforms, but no install disc for FFXI on the 360.
I use a USB keyboard on my playstation, but avoid that platform because of the inability to turn off weather effects. And the fact that my TV crops an inch off the edges of the image...which isn't that bad until you try to read the maps. Or dodge aggro. Or find someone/something in a zone.
When vegging out on FFXI, I am usually found on the porch with my laptop reclining in a lounge chair.

I have the game installed on all three platforms. I started on PS2, then switched to the 360. Then, my 360 broke three times in three months, so I bought the PC version to tide me over til it was fixed.
The 360 is where I spend most of my FFXI time, but I'll use the PC (now that I have the 360 wireless game pad adapter XD ) if my husband is playing something on the console. The game is still installed on the PS2, but I haven't logged on from it in a few months.
I use a USB keyboad when playing on 360. That attachment looks really cool, but it seems a little small for comfortable typing.

I play on the 360. Just use a USB keyboard with a USB extension line. A friend of mine plays on his 360 with a wireless keyboard, between the controller and keyboard there are no wires.
I couldn't imagine playing with that little keypad attatchment.

PS2 for life!
I actually have a laptop that's capable of running this game and don't plan on using it ever. Sure, .dat swaps and enchaned graphics aren't possible, but it's completely fine with me. I actually enjoy the grimy, old-school look and exclusive features available on the Playstation.
People talk alot about the HDD having a short life span, but I've had mine since 2005 and it works fine. A year or so ago, I bought an extra system, network adapter, and HDD just in case my current models break. That way, I can keep playing on PS2 but after this long, I seriously doubt that will happen. I'm almost finished saving for my very own PS3, so I can probably start playing on it. That's about as close as I'll come to moving from the PS2 for my FFXI needs.
As for the Xbox Controller, it looks like it will be uncomfortable and too much of a hastle. If it's anything like the Logitech Controller/Keyboard Hybrid, it's better to just purchase a seperate USB Keyboard than try to navigate around the tiny keys and odd placement.

Play on the ancient ps2 here, won a copy of the V'Anadiel collection but my current pc is <too weak> so I'm consoling for now.

I play on the Ps3 and love it!!!
why does it say speculation at this point? i though it was established that FFXI is playable on the Ps3, i'm pretty sure SE put out that it is compatible, or am i wrong?
Murphie

You're right, Cacti. It's not speculation at all. However, there isn't a PS3 specific version as yet. Just people with the PS2 version on their PS3.

PC version onry. I'll be blunt, the xbox controller just pisses me off, and I couldn't imagine playing FFXI with it. I have a Logitech USB dual-analog stick controller I use on my PC for mostly everything except exp parties. I just find my keyboard so much more efficient when I'm hitting macros on the fly. Any other time, however, I enjoy sitting back in my large, comfortable computer chair with my controller while staring at my 20", wide screen, flat panel, LCD monitor.

...you can use a keyboard on the 360. Even a wireless one if you want. Plus, how can you find the logi dual controller BETTER than a 360 controller? To each his own I guess... it's like rather owning a Kia than a Ferrari.

I just play on PS2, I find playing with a Keyboard and mouse to be too restrictive for my liking. I like my couch and keyboard is just for chatting. I'll probably move to 360 version eventually, but have no interest in doing so until MS works out the system's kinks.

The 360 has great handling from the controller. I have problems connecting sometimes, but I don't know if it's the box or my service. Does heat up smaller rooms rather quick too.
PhiberOpticks
06-21-2007, 02:03 PM
Yeah it does heat up pretty easily. But Microsoft is accepting taking back 360s to update them with new cooling systems, if my RSS feeds are correct.
But now that I now know...a PS2 update on a PS3 is a great solution for the porting problem. Does anyone know how well FFXI plays on the PS3 with that system update?

from what I've read it seems to work fine...
As for me I'm still playing on a PS2 all the way from the free copy I got for beta testing FFXI way back. My PS2 has no problems and the HDD works fine. I did buy the original Vanidel Collection and TAOU for PC awhile back but all it did was remind me how much I hate controling FFXI with a KB and mouse(plus my dad's PC has a nasty habit of crashing while playing games due to a quirk[I don't feel like fixing it because it works fine 99% of the time])
I play with a USB kb for chatting and a Dual Shock for playing. I can't see doing it any other way. I might try the PC edition again when I manage to get a better computer but I'll be configing a PS2-style controler with the PS2 controls(the KB and mouse controls are terrible...ESPC. for walking around and controling the camera!)
As for the Xbox360 it's hard for me to justify owning one as I can't seem to find any games I really want beyond Blue Dragon and maybe Eternal Sonatta. Sure you can use it for another FFXI machine but with the itisy-bitsy 20 gig HDD what's the point(FFXI fills up a good chunk of it)? Plus I've always hated the Xbox controlers...and the 360 didn't really make it much better than the chunky money or the controler S(just a lite version of the ugg...chunky monkey)
Another thing that's turned me off Xbox systems is every Xbox fan I meet seems to be a stupid lame fanboy who can't see past the end of their own nose! Now I'm sure there are nice ones out there but I always seem to keep bumping ito these fanboys who yell something like "Xbox rulez!" and the stupid comment that if it's not on an XBox the game stinks...

New PC players. I did for a bit and later I showed someone else how to use the keyboard instead and he was blown away at how much better the control of the game was.

It's seriously so much easier without the mouse.

I hate using the arrow keys for the camera...I can't ever get it right....plus running around with the KB is just awfull to me...

That means you're doing it wrong. No offense. Some people prefer the controller.

I use PC with a PS2->USb adapter.
I have it for Xbox 360 but the damn thing is so loud , so i only use it for running alts

I was using a dual shock-style USB controler and I had to run the game 5+ times to get the buttons just like my PS2(uhh...testing 1-2-3 XD) but after that it worked great. You're right I can't stand using the KB to move and the mouse is worse! Yes I've use arrow keys and the various KB controls before...but I utterly hate the KB movement + Camera controls for FFXI PC.
FFXI was originally designed to map onto a PS2 controler and I think it works best that way(no offense)...but to use an old addage I know: "Everone to their own taste said Mother Murphy as she kissed a cow..."

One of the things I like the most about XI is that you don't need to use the mouse. I mean a mouse is great to have for FPS or RTS games, but for games like XI it just sucks.
A keyboard is way more efficient, and I wish more Online games with text msg support would go that way. That's one of the main reasons I got lazy about even trying to play WoW and one of the reasons why I was always annoyed while playing MxO and stuff, the mouse is just too slow, specially when you need to use menus.

I agree! I love being able to just use the keyboard and no mouse. It's always fun to see the look of wonder on my friend's faces as they see me flying through tons of menus without a hitch with just a keyboard hehe.

PC . . . until, if and when, FFXI comes to the Wii.
