View Full Version : Fasting Ring vs. Balance rings?
Hey BSTs. I'm currently hunting down for some lvl 14 and 15 equips. I'm using a guide up on FFXIclopedia and I see that Balance rings are listed under lvl 14. Ok no problam. But then at 15 I see the Balance ring. Not a problam either. It's an easy enough ring to camp but I can only have one.
So Now the question comes to me. Do I want to Give up one of the Balance rings (DEX +2) for a single fasting ring (HP -20 MP +10 STR +1)?
Also I'm a Taru so the -20 HP is kinda scareing me.
Opinions please.

your post is a little messed up but i would go with the Fasting ring myself, being a RDM Main i hate when i havea MP pool which is too small but seeing your a taru your MP will be naturally bigger than mine was, question is do you get hit alot for that -20 HP to cause death a hit or two earlier?

Just use a Mighty Ring/Vision Ring combo. That's what I'm using at that level on BST.

For me personally, I went with STR over DEX; I used two Courage Rings (+2STR each) at your level.
Also, as a Taru, I feel that we should stock up on a little bit extra +ATK and +STR. So, the Mighty Ring that Murphie suggested is very nice; +5ATK at that level is very nice.
With regards to the Fasting Ring, if you're /WHM, the +10 MP gets you at least 1 extra Cure to compensate for the -20 HP loss.

As a Bst, I'd go Chr rings, then after you land the charm switch to mighty/vision rings. Balance rings won't do much for you, the increase in acc is minimal at best. And the fasting ring while soloing might be more danger then it's worth because 20 HP can be the difference between living and dying when you can't get that cure spell off or that charm to land.
My advice, niether balance nor the fasting ring would be optimal for you to use as a taru Bst.

I think I just melee'ed with my CHR rings at that level. You won't be able to melee alongside your pet as much at those low levels anyway, since the pets you use, even EM ones, will be relatively weak compared to your prey. When you need to use 2 to 3 pets for a mob, the choice you make on those rings isn't going to make or break you.

Rings aren't a huge dealbreaker at this level, use whatever your comfortable with... and stay very close to a zone line.

Exactly. Gear isn't entirely necessary during those levels. It can make a difference, absolutely, but if you don't have it, you can still progress.
Keep in mind that with a Mighty or Vision ring you can't do gear swaps in that slot, because you'll lose the enchantment.

Hi there,
I'm a lvl 31 Bst at the moment, I myself have 2x Hope rings for charm purposes and switch to Balance rings for melee, I'm not sure but i 'think' 2dex is meant to equal 1 acc personally I have not seen any difference but i had them in my inventory so thought why not. I suppose they are'nt the worst rings to wear but I'd try find something else
if it helps heres my equipment
main : Military Pick
sub : Bastokan Targe
head : Centurions visor
neck : spike necklace
body : centurions scale mail
hands : royal squires mufflers
legs : centurions cuisses
feet : centurions greaves
waist : barbarians belt
ears : mythril earrings
rings : balance rings
as for charm gear I only have a few pieces as its my first character
I have
nobles ribbon (fairy cheap)
bird whistle (I have no idea where i got it from but i have it, knowing me its probably simple to obtain)
2x hope rings get these they will last till lvl 36 when loyalty rings can be used
unfortunately I dont have a monster signa and most likely never own one its seriously overcamped on remora to a point its not even worth showing up for it, you think there is only 3 people waiting for it -> mob spawns + 20+ more people seem to drop invis, its a shame it happens because its a good piece but as I'm edging my way closer to 50 I can say up to 30 its definately not needed.
I am by far not the best of beastmasters but I hope this helps you in your progress.
take care

Thanks for all the imput guys. I'm not going to be able to pick up the vision/mighty combo. I can see it's a good choice, but I just can't shell out 50k for lvl 15 exquips, thats half my bank account.
For a BST on a budget it seems that Balance are best.
But thank you everyone for posting. I like the imput I get from much more experienced BSTs....It keeps me going

Go for courage rings if you can't get mighty/vision, the Str/Att will help more then the dex as a taru at your lvl.

The signa always seemed like more of a Brd toy to me, especially now that resting with signet prevents TP loss. So I don't think you have to worry too much about it. Also, the Bird Whistle drops from the same NM as the Signa just more frequently, you probably got it while camping him.

Actually, the bird whistle drops from Vuu Puqu the Beguiler (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Vuu_Puqu_the_Beguiler), and the Signa drops from Hoo Mjuu the Torrent. (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Hoo_Mjuu_the_Torrent) Same general area of Giddeus, but not the same mob at all.

Ah, right. I knew there was another NM there, but I thought he dropped boots and a bow >_>

I feel sorry for the crafters on Bahamut then. Both rings (Mighty and Vision) cost between 5k and 6k just to make. It's hard enough to make a profit on durables these days, so not being able to make a profit on consumables is dire.
That 50k price mentioned for Midgardsormr must be based on what you might find in one of the starting cities. FFXIAH.com shows that those rings are going for 20k in Jeuno. Still, that's a lot for a newer player working on a tight budget.
The great thing about soloing as BST is that your pets will never complain that you need more expensive gear.

I think the 50k price point was the total for both rings, not each one.

I checked based on your server's prices for the materials as well. Vision and Mighty Ring are probably better off being made using mostly NPC sold stuff. Silver Rings, Amethysts and Sardonyxs are all sold by an NPC in Jeuno. Even if you somehow got a hold of those items cheaper through the AH (they can't get much cheaper than the NPC), you wouldn't make that much of a profit on each ring, especially considering that you'll basically have to do 3 synths to make one ring.

That makes sense. Though the price of two Balance Rings comes up to about the same. But if I were on a tight budget, I'd get something I can sell back later (Balance Rings) rather than something I'll potentially use up and not be able to sell back (Vision/Mighty Ring).

I'm not sure what the problem is.
